Trey Ziegler to CMU rumors heating up...
Reports were that Trey's decision was down to CMU and UCLA and more recent reports have UCLA as being out. Also reports of something "big" happening for CMU basketball on Wednesday. At this point they're all just internet rumors, but if they end up being true, Trey will become the best basketball recruit to ever hit the MAC, and probably any mid-major program.

I'm crossing my fingers and toes!!!

Big-name high schoolers who spurned the Massive U's are few and far between. Here are some that I can recall:

Karl Malone (Louisiana Tech)
Adonal Foyle (Colgate)
Jeff Ruland (Iona)

How many of those guys were highly touted recruits, and how many of them were just under the radar coming out of HS? My bet is most of them fall under the latter category.

Q: How many of those guys were highly touted recruits, and how many of them were just under the radar coming out of HS? My bet is most of them fall under the latter category.

A: Bird transferred from Indiana University. I'm not sure how highly recruited "The Admiral" or "The Shack of the MAC" were, but they were both great college players. I do remember both Foyle and Ruland were highly recruited by Kentucky, among others. Malone was also a "high-major" recruit, but I'm pretty sure he wanted to stay close to home and play at the local rural school.

Which now brings to mind...

Walter Luckett (Ohio Univ) VERY HIGHLY recruited and was on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

I think Robinson grew like 6 inches or something crazy like that while in school. Trent was a big recruit, I'm told. John Stockton went to Gonzaga.

Agree on Robinson.

?:

Could Robinson had gotten into the Naval Academy if he were a 7 foot h.s. senior?

Right on Robinson.

Not sure about Trent but he was also recruited at Ohio in the days when MAC basketball had more national respect.

John Stockton was old school. He would be lucky to make the NBA out of college today.

Stockton wasn't highly recruited at all. One true story: his mother nearly threw away his invitation to try-out for the USA Olympic Team, thinking it was junk mail. Stockton just missed the cut, as Booby (sic) Knight homered him by picking Steve Alford as the last guard.

Stockton would have a hard time in today's draft culture where a lot of sophmores and juniors declare early for the NBA draft plus all the international players.

He was the 16th pick in the 1984 draft (when the NBA had 23 teams). He would have been lucky to find a team interested in the second round these days.

Again, there are plenty of players to list when talking about great players who went to non-major programs (Dan Roundfield, Dan Majerle at CMU), but I don't think there has ever been a player of Trey's caliber to go to a mid-major team. Turning down a schollie to OSU (when OSU sucked) isn't the same as literally having your choice of any school in the country. Trey would be turning down Duke, UCLA, Kentucky, Arizona, Michigan State, etc. The only school that Trey probably couldn't go to would be UNC and even then I'm not sure he wouldn't get an offer. He could end up not being as good as he's touted, and he might not even sign with CMU, but if he does it would be unprecedented AFAIK.

It sounds great if it happens.

The MAC West could use the talent infusion.

Trent was very productive in HS but was not highly recruited. his dad was locked up, he had bounced around and already had legal issues and was questionable academically, as a 6-7 post player, the big time schools weren't going to take a chance. had he been 6-9 they would have chanced it.

Because it bears repeating and most of you are too young to know, Walter Luckett was THE GUY out of high school. It's not very often when a freshman makes the cover of Sports Illustrated for their college basketball issue:

Meanwhile, the Mount Pleasant Morning Sun is reporting TZ will be in a Chippewa uniform. Official announcement is scheduled for ESPNU at 4:45 (EDT) this Wednesday, April 14.

I'd say this is the biggest news in MAC hoops recruiting since Bonzi Wells signed with Ball State and before that, Kenny Battle with Northern Illinois.

I gotta say that this makes CMU the favorite to win the MAC next year. They have some other voids to fill, but Trey should be the most talented player in the conference immediately.

RE: Trey Ziegler to CMU rumors heating up...
While he's very highly touted, he has YET to play a single second of college ball. History is littered with "can't miss" stars in H.S. that never really panned out as college players. Not saying this will be the case, just don't count them turkey vultures before they hatch.

I suspect that Z is the real deal but I'm skeptical of your claims that CMU will be the fav next year in the West. If you want to follow the WMU model, notice that we learned that one GREAT player can't necessarily get your team the conference championship.

Still, if he does sign with CMU, it is a great pickup and reason to be excited for CMU fans. My view is that CMU needs to fill some other rather big holes next year.

Awesome that they got Trey. Very exciting.

Also, I forgot a big one: Bryce Drew.
