Interesting conversation today with one of the
sports anchors on one of our tv stations who spoke to a group I belong to at LifeQuest. He said that he thought Steve would get another year, but that could change, and one thing that might play a part is John Brady's success in turning the program around and bringing in some very athletic players. Should ASU go on to have a successful season, it could hurt Steve's chances of remaining. Interesting that our coach's future could possibly hinge on the performance of the ASU coach. Now that's true irony. Keep in mind that this was just an assumption on this persons part, and could or could not have any bearing on the situation.04-cheers

Don't know who he was, and don't really care, but he doesn't know anymore than any of us. I've said all along that they won't get rid of Shields this year. I'm basing that on pure speculation, that since all of you guys want to keep him, and I'm the only negative person on this board, and our goal is to have the best mediocre program in the Sun Belt. As long as we can be the third or fourth best team in the league, everybody is happy. 04-cheersI wouldn't think that Chris Peterson has discussed his options with any newspaper or anchor person. And I know he hasn't discussed it with me. If he had, it wouldn't be a secret any longer, because I'd have let you guys in on it.

Mediocre is one thing, but so far this season we would love to be mediocre. I think Shields would have survived a mediocre year, but this has been a train wreck.

After 23 wins last season, I am sure this year is killing Shields. Anyone have any ulcer medicine to peddle?

I would too at this point. But, I have no desire to be just a middle of the road program, and basically that's all we've been. Win the West, and still be the third or fourth best team in the league. I won't accept this bull**** that people are actually satisfied with this type of program, year after year. And we're not even middle of the road this year, and for two other years Shields has been the coach. This season we will be damn lucky not to be the worst team in the league.

I can guarantee you that Chris has not discussed this with an anchor person who no doubt has a newscast called the Hog Zone, Pig Stye, Swine Droppings, or something along that line. Conceivably could be a lot of vacant coaching positions in the State come March. Pelphrey is likely on his way out. Steve could be looking for a job. Brady could move to better job if he continues to keep the Red Wolves on top. You got to believe somebody will be looking at the men's and women's coaches at Arkansas Tech.

I thought Pelphrey would survive. After being down to Kentucky 76-29, early in the second half, I'm not so sure any more. Kentucky is good, but they shouldn't do that to a reasonable DII team. Maybe if UAF paid the search firm 100K instead of 90K, they would have gotten them Darrin Horn, instead of Pelphrey.

I tend to believe that Brady likes it at ASU and would stay there for awhile. However, folks who seem to know more than me believe he'll be out of Jonesboro the first good offer he gets.

Can't imagine the men's coach at Arkansas Tech won't get some looks from DI programs.

I don't have a clue about Steve. I would have agreed 100% with LRTrojan that he would be back regardless, a few weeks ago. I'd still like to believe that, but I'm not quite as sure as LRTrojan is. I know a win over ASU next week would help my mental state. Not sure how much it would effect Steve's job security, but it probably couldn't hurt to get a win.

I was clear that this was just speculation on this individual's part and you're right. He doesn't really know any more than we do. He personally thought Steve should get another year. Personally, I just want what's best for the program. What that is, at this moment, I can't really say. There are pros and cons. Obviously this season there are more cons. If we go on a winning run, it could sway things in Steve's direction. If we continue to lose, prospects probably won't be too good.
04-cheers

Are you predicting he won't survive past this season? That's what it sounds like to me, but I might be reading something into this statement that isn't what you are suggesting. If I were a betting man, I would avoid this bet, because I have no earthly idea what is going to happen with the program.03-banghead

Suppose Steve was to leave, for whatever reason. Do you think there would be any possibility of Foley moving over to coach the men's team?
Could he recruit men at the level we need to win? There's no doubt in my mind he could do the x's and o's, but does he have the temperament to coach men? And do you think he would even be interested in coaching men? Interesting thought, isn't it.04-cheers

No predictions at all. If we had had a normal rebuilding year, with wins at least in double figures, then I figure Steve would be safe. But 5-25 is another matter, or even 8-22, which looks optimistic at this point.
