Akron lands former Temple Recruit
Anthony Holmes to Akron

I'm really fuzzy on the whole deal with his decommit from Temple. I think a factor in him choosing to Akron is his connection to DT Christopher Henderson.

I have absolutely no idea why he decomitted, but we've got some great young talent in the secondary, so I'm not worrying about it.

That's what I was thinking when the information about Brandon was posted yesterday on here.

So he de-committed because because somebody else that can't play until 2011 plays the same position? And is he on the pep squad?

Quote:Holmes is rated as the No. 43 pep school player.

"Now, I'm not gonna go to Temple," Holmes said. "Now, I'm free and on the market. They sent me through this process of which they sent me to this prep school, Milford Academy. I wasn't all the way qualified. The coaches told me I had to get a 900 on my SAT and I was ok. After the year, their admissions was acting like they didn't wanna still accept me because they wanted my GPA higher. Then, he told me just the SAT. I'm just tired of foolin' around with them."

Not sure what the story is, but he may have been a non-qualifier at Temple?

Judging by his use of the English language, plus his inability to score a 900 on the SATs, I think we're better off. He probably needed like a 2.5 at Milford and didn't get it. We're no diploma mill with a lack of standards. Good job, TU.

Qualifying is determined by the NCAA Clearinghouse, not individual institutions. He is either a qualifier everywhere or nowhere. He might not have been admitted by your admissions department, but usually athletics can get athletes admitted if they really want them.

Very speculative. It does not give any GPA numbers and implying some arbitrary number is unfair to the student. He made a change and I hardly think this does not warrant ill will. He decommitted and made a decision to attend another school, happens all the time.

IT may happen all the time but you usually don;t get this many nuggets of info.

You are correct. A couple years ago, Temple addmissions started requiring their athletes to achieve higher admissions standards to qualify at Temple.

His use of the English language is not so bad there at all, better than what you could expect from most kids that age and better than 90% of the posts on this forum.

It's not really speculative, Holmes basically said he didn't qualify for Temple's admission standards. It's pretty sad, because we dont exactly hold the same admission standards for athletes as Harvard. Doesn't make Akron look very good for taking him.

True- the writer obviously chose how he would present the verbal offerings- had he written "want to" instead of "wanna" and added "ings" to the ends of words it would have appeared very differently.

I don' wanna agree that 90% of we here'd be worse but maybe 'bout 50%.

It is still speculative when you use terms like "basically said he didn't qualify". He didn't say that he was not admitted. You can guess that was the issue but since you can not say this with any certainity, it is speculation. I am not worried about taking a student who meets the NCAA qualifying standards. If he turns out to be a non-qualifier, then there is an academic issue.

Well the NCAA minimums are pretty, well, minimum. If you want to be specific, he seems to have met the NCAA minimums, but did not meet Temple's. That seems to be his gripe with TU. If that's speculative, then whatever. Not our problem anymore.

Sounds to me like his gripe is that he feels he met the original requirements Temple set forth and they changed while he was in Prep school.

Well he wouldn't have gone to prep school if he met them initially (most likely...), so it would appear that he didn't meet them a second time in prep school either.
