Amtrak to NO from Mempho
Been a long time.
Can I go, walk to a hotel from the rail terminal, walk to the Quarter?
Did it a long time ago.
Budget thinking while tix are $40.
Not even sure why I want to go to FQ other than it has been 22 years.

Go for it. The FQ is the only thing left standing.

You'll remember once you get there. If you can't have a good time in the FQ, well, then.....

I seem to remember it was a bit too far to walk to the FQ from the train station, esp. with luggage. We had to take a taxi. And I would imagine it would be WAY too dangerous to do that now. You really have to be careful where you go in NO since Katrina.

But you say tix are $40? One-way? Or round trip? I have been thinking about a Feb. trip on the train. I am really getting interested now. The Royal Sonesta is not cheap, but it is SO nice and SO convenient. The balcony rooms are the ones to ask for. They upgraded us at no charge when we arrived when we asked for a balcony room.

yes, it is too far to walk to the quarter from the train station.
but you won't have any trouble getting a cab, and they're cheap. they don't have cab attendants though, so don't tip anybody who tries to act like he is one. that's not a new scam though.

and new orleans isn't a warzone. it's no less safe than it was august 27, 2005. just as in any city you have to be smart and don't get yourself into vulnerable situations. if you want any suggestions for places to go outside the quarter let me know, there are some cool bars not too far away in the marigny.

RE: Amtrak to NO from Mempho
I have tons of relatives in the area, one a fire chief in N.O....there for a while the city was thought to be safer than ever because of the Katrina evacuation (many thought the bad people all left and didn't come back) but it seems that thru the years some of those bad people have made their way back. Just like any big touristy city, just be careful. Good food, good people, good times. Laisez les bons temps rouler.

The only thing I can comment on has been highlighted. It's probably not what you're really interested in.
