CA - Memphis Tigers eye Canadian basketball players
Quote:LAS VEGAS -- To get a clear indication of basketball's status as a secondary sport in Canada, just ask a Canadian to name some of the best players to come out of the country of late.

"Recently?" point guard Cory Joseph asked. "I'm not sure there's a whole bunch. ... Denham Brown?"

Such has been the state of Canadian hoops, which claims Steve Nash, Samuel Dalembert and Jamaal Magloire as its NBA standard-bearers, though the first two on that list weren't even born in Canada.

Things are about to change in a major way, however, as a run of elite Canadian players is about to hit college basketball. And the University of Memphis may be in position to capitalize on it.

RE: CA - Memphis Tigers eye Canadian basketball players
This quote will stir up some discussion:

Quote:Though Memphis has obviously been recruiting White Station point guard Joe Jackson, it would be incorrect to call Joseph a backup plan. After all, he's a top-20 player (ranked higher than Jackson) and his interest in the Tigers is legitimate.

Joseph, in fact, has been on the Memphis campus for an unofficial visit since Pastner became the head coach, and he said he is high on the Tigers' program.

"I liked the facilities, and talking to coach Pastner, he seems like a great guy," Joseph said. "He has told me it's a nice situation, and their style of play is kind of like my style of play. We've built a relationship, so I like it."

With Jackson seemingly intent on dragging his recruitment into the spring, it would seem almost impossible for Pastner to pass on Joseph if the Canadian is on a quicker timetable. Though Joseph said he wasn't sure when he would make a college decision, he said he would soon sit down with Russell and his mother to cut down a list that also includes Kansas, Texas, Villanova, Connecticut, Texas A&M and UNLV.

Just wondering 68, but why are you always first to publish the CA articles on here? Do you work for the appeal?

Jackson knows that Pastner has recruited him harder than anyone else, and knows how much he is wanted. But Pastner can't afford to not recruit other top guys at the position. As long as Jackson isn't committed here, you have to assume he could be committed anywhere else. If another top pg were to commit here first, and Jackson felt like he missed out, that's life.

I'm one that wants some local stars, as long as they want it (and I mean giving heart and soul to the Tigers want it, loyal to the coach and team and not old coaches and hangers on want it).

But if he would want the chance if it was no longer there, it's best to take the chance while it is there.

RE: CA - Memphis Tigers eye Canadian basketball players
Putting all of his chips on Joe Jackson would be a high-risk, high-reward move for Pastner, who understandably does not want to go into the spring without knowing who his starting point guard will be in 2010-11... Corey Joseph could be the answer if Jackson keep dragging it... Getting Joseph is more realistic than hoping Josh Selby will be a Tiger... Selby has pretty much sold his soul to Worldwide Wes....

RE: CA - Memphis Tigers eye Canadian basketball players
It's like when you were in high school and there was a big dance coming up. You knew that this really pretty girl wanted you to ask her to go but you wanted to wait and see who else might be available. Then all of the sudden the pretty girl got asked by someone else and you missed out. You end up having to take someone else who you would have rather not gone with. Then you have to stand there and watch the other guy dancing with the girl you could have gone out with. Let me end this little analogy by strongly stating that this NEVER happened to me personally and I have no first hand knowledge of how this would feel. I'm just saying, JJ the UofM is ready to go to the Big Dance with you. What about it?04-rock

So from this statement I gather that you have seen all of these players play multiple times. Otherwise, you couldn't possibly make such a statement and actually attempt to pass it off as a fact. Ohhhhh wait a minute! We are talking about the all powerful Joe Jackson here. I forget that he is better than anyone who has ever lived.

I keep saying it, but JJ's situation is so much like the CDR/Prince one, and we all know how that turned out for us. If he ends up somewhere else and we get a top 20 PG, then at this point I could care less. I want the Memphis guys, but I also don't want to be left holding the bag scrambling to find a quality PG (or any other position) for the future either. Josh is no idiot and will do the right thing to take care of the program.

I'm just waiting for the post that JJ would be a lottery pick straight out of HS.

RE: CA - Memphis Tigers eye Canadian basketball players
It would be a shame to lose a player that truly wanted to be a Tiger because he waited too long, but there are benefits to that happening whenever it inevitably does. It will get the locals to speed it up; which is a good thing; it will get the locals to see that there is competition among players to become Memphis Tigers, and it ultimately means that we got a good player.
