You have to understand that these are top-end recruits desired by the top schools across the country. Sure we might get one or two of these guys (highly unlikely), but we're not at that point yet as a program where we can get these types of players. Maybe one day we will if we can emulate the success of Boise St or Utah.

My problem with our "machine" is that he barely lands mid level type guys.
Just taking a look at this past class shows, that on paper, he reaches for guys because he strikes out so often with the mid level guys we should get.

NIU offered Morris DE Kevin Henry over the weekend. Henry is a little bit under the radar right now but I think he'll continue to rack up the offers as he camps during the summer. At 6-5, 255, he has a chance to be a terrific player in college.

GAston St. Rita...... It pi** es me off when we are not even in on these Catholic leaguers who are NOT 4 or 5 stars. I am NOT a Catholic League guy ....suburban..... but hell they play in the C League and there are only 12-18 schools and they are avid FB. We should be on their ASS. Seeing these players with 2,3 ,4 MAC offers and not a mention of NIU ..... I don"t like that ****. 12-18 C League schools the big 6-8 CPL (athletes) Morgan Park,Simeon...etc... we have to be ON THEM. WE HAVE TO DIG FOR TALENT.
I love the St Rita camp idea and in the next couple years it could yield some good results. When Novak first got here they would run FREE coaches clinics in Chicago & Milwaukee (believe NCAA banned off campus clinics) and they develop some good bonds that paid off.

I think your overall point speaks to the difference in recruiting styles/focus of Kill and Novak. Novak, obviously, was very Illinois/Midwest centric, which makes sense given NIU's location. It worked well. Kill, however, does seem to be looking elsewhere, especially for the skill positions. It may work out, but it's a stark contrast to how Novak and his staffs operated. I don't think you are going to see NIU get on as many Illinois kids like that as hard as Novak did. Both can work, they're just different approaches.
Gaston is probably going to end up in the Big Ten. If he continues to camp around and doesn't make an early decision, he will end up with offers from most of the conference. He already has offers from Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan State.

He will go to a BCS school. He has 3 offers. Next.

It's interesting that you say that. Midwest players seem to almost always go BCS when they have the offers. But look at the West coast and Southern players. They consistently choose mid-majors over BCS schools. Look at USM's last two recruiting classes. Look at the classes Utah, BYU, Boise State, UCF, ECU, Houston, TCU, etc. bring in and you will consistently see the kids down South and out West choosing mid-majors over BCS schools. Midwest kids don't seem to realize that they can go to a mid-major and play for four years and still go to the NFL. Instead they rather sit for two or three years behind a bunch of other kids who are all rated just as high, if not higher than them. But whatever, if you want to go to Indiana over NIU and never go to a bowl game or be at a school with little football success then that's your choice.

Wide receiver Julius Shelby (Hillside, Ill./Proviso West) performed well on Saturday, making some nice catches and showing pretty good speed. He also passed the look test. At 6-4, 200 pounds, Shelby has excellent size for a college wide receiver. Shelby stopped at Northern Illinois on Friday before heading to Champaign. He is interested in Illinois, Northern Illinois, Arizona, Indiana and Western Michigan. He feels his first offer might come from the Wildcats in the near future.

I saw this kid play last year and he looked real good to me, along with his teammate Kyle Prater of course. If Proviso West had a better QB they would be scary with those two receivers. Their QB last year was a good athlete and football player but not a polished thrower.

Funny you mention their QB...supposedly there is a pretty good chance Prater will play QB for Proviso West this year. He talked about it at some point earlier this year.

Ball State takes a top IN RB away from IU. Nice work by their staff.
Despite being in the Big 10, I believe that any relevancy of Indiana having any recruiting prowess has almost completely eroded. Iowa has faded, but I think they may make a big push this year in recruiting kids in Illinois.
