Joe Paterno calls for the Big Ten to expand
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4118848

He mentions some Big East teams. We always talk about the BE adding somebody to fix their schedules, but what if they did the opposite and one of the FB teams leaves? That could trigger even bigger re-alignments as they scramble to replace a team and probably add more to prevent that scenario from happening again.

RE: Joe Paterno calls for the Big Ten to expand
This is kind of a different approach but I think personally they would do a lot better trying to add a program like Nebraska.

Nebraska has a nice national following and would fill it up at places like Northwestern and Illinois where fans are desperately needed. They would anchor a Big Ten West division.

Syracuse is definetly not viable now with their program a mess, Pitt would be a waste of time with Penn State the duplicate market. Rutgers I still feel is too small and not established enough to compete in the Big Ten.

Nebraska to the Big Ten would start the dominos westward.....BYU to the Big XII....then I don't know what would be next.....

Even in the situation where it is a Big East school, to reload the Big East will be looking at a East Carolina or maybe a Temple type replacement.

The odds of the Big East going to 12 in response are very, very slim.

Missouri wants to leave the Big XII. They're a good fit with the Big Ten with similar types of schools.

Either way, the Big East desperately needs at least one other school for football so that they can have 8 conference games. But the basketball schools won't allow it. Notre Dame could fix the problem easily, but right now they have a better TV deal than the entire Big East.

If the B-10 expands, filling NW's stadium won't be the reason.
B-10 would be looking to increase revenue of B-10 network.
between the population of NY state, NYC metro area & Championship game.
Syracuse easily brings the most money to the table

Notre Dame doesn't have quite the advantage TV wise that it did years ago, in fact Big Ten and SEC schools are getting much more.

The question too is if ND feels that it needs to join an all-sport conference to stay abreast financially or maintain affiliation with a BCS conference its most likely move will be to the ACC which they considered last time around. That would really shake things up across the conferences.

Its bound to happen again with the economy forcing stronger alignments.

Syracuse, I don't think so. Why was Boston College choosen over Syracuse for the ACC. Especially right now Syracuse provides a little share of the NYC football market.

The key here is that no one, supposedly, is actually listening to JoePa. The article mentions how he feels that he is viewed as the old man in the room who is allowed to talk, but doesn't have an opinion that anyone there seems to value.

My guess would be Missouri or WVU if expansion happens.

WVU no way, its small market and they don't have the academics.

The short list is:

ND
Rutgers
Missouri
Nebraska (kind of an out there pick but I like it)

But aren't you a LITTLE surprised that our state's "flagship" university isn't mentioned in the mix? 03-wink

Why does Missouri want to leave the Big 12? They've been there for a long time, they have close rivals...

I agree they make sense, but what would their motivation be?

As I said before, the Big 11 blew it by not grabbing for Va Tech.

I always thought Pitt would be a good fit for the Big 11 and give PSU a big conference rivalry. Basketball is great too.

Not at all.

Virginia as a state is growing (PA is not). VPI would provide a great rival to Penn St, and it has MANY alumni in the Wash DC area. So, if you're interested in new markets, VPI brings Wash DC, and Richmond, and the rest of Virginia.

BTW, you play Penn St v VPI at Fed Ex field, and that place is PACKED! This is the potential response to the World's Largest Cocktail Party, and the Red River Rivalry.

VPI's academics are adequate, frankly I think they're unappreciated in the national surveys. That will change over time.

You are overlooking the fact that VPISU has always wanted to be in the ACC and has no interest in the Big Ten. They've been in the old Metro Conference and the Big East just because they had no where else to go. If they had joined the Big Ten they still would have looked to ACC membership and left when the opportunity presented itself, which it eventually did. Now that the Gobblers are in the ACC it's a dead issue.

Need some proof for this statement. A link to a newspaper article, a statement by Mizzou's AD or a Big 12 representative would do. Was this overheard in the men's room at the local bar on Super Bowl Sunday?

Can you show me any quote from a MAC AD or representative showing that they're unhappy with our conference? I doubt it. And still, plenty of schools are unhappy and would jump ship at the first realistic opportunity.

Missouri's fans are split between wanting to join the Big Ten or stay in the Big 12, mostly geographically along the Mississippi river.

As for some of the other schools mentioned, the Big Ten has a rule that they cannot add a new school unless it is either in a current Big Ten state or bordering one. VA Tech and Nebraska are not possible.
