I basically understand JR's overall point, Stink, I was simply noting that he might not want to be fully dismissive of the assessment from Laffin. Maybe he wasn't (the Laffin piece clearly was not the thrust of JR's argument).

What's in a name, huh Bill? Journalists are bought and paid for since conglomerates took over the print industry, which is dying anyway, and just another reason what they write is usually provoking somebody. Creating the pissed off sells papers and drives views if online. Attention whore and credible are not descriptors usually used within the same context. And here you are making a case for it. George Will was once considered credible. H.W. Bush pretty well destroyed that, and it was before the print media was horribly impinged by the internet and desperate. Desperate people in besieged industries are inherently untrustworthy sources for straight information. Put it in D.C. where allegiances are constantly changing at the whim of advertisers and sponsors and it defies reason to trust anything purported for either side. End of Story. You should always not only consider the source, but its circumstances and audience.

Using this logic (and you make strong points) ... I may as well resign from my job as a business journalist as not a single one of us journalist can be trusted. Maybe I could land work as Stink's personal assistant. I just hope he can afford to pay me $20 an hour.

There is plenty of work available for good business analysts paying more than $20 an hour. What is the endangered species soon to be extinct? It is the journalist. Corporations love to tell a version of history friendly to their world view. Hell, the local newspaper here was edited in Virginia and the plates digitally created with the edited version for the paper to run. They were not edited for grammar, correct word usage, spelling, or anything that once was part of the hallmark of newspaper integrity. They were edited for stories that might impact the company's stock positions, and to reflect the company's social values, which was simply word salad for politics. There's no integrity in that. If you want to maintain your integrity while preserving a livelihood then use your skills to analyze the businesses that you write about in ways that highlight what they do well, while alluding to things they could do to enhance their bottom line. Suggestions on enhancements make midlevel management that reads your bylines look better to their bosses, especially since those educated in the last 30 years haven't been taught skills in critical thinking.

You have knack for straddling fences, actually a good skill to have at times, but also finding the path between the horns of a dilemma. It's that last one that will make you worth a higher paygrade as it is a rarer skill than the labor force, and professional pool of advisors can readily demonstrate.

I've always found that by understanding as completely as possible all sides to an issue but not raising them in the context of my remarks, that I could offer a view of the situation which could get the parties to focus on the locus of mutual self-interest. That works unless of course there is no locus of mutual self-interest then it's time to layout a path that would be the most productive even in one side loses. And even then, I had only the obligation to lay it out. I didn't have to own it, the deciders did. The beauty of being an analyst is you deliver hard data with recommendations. A recommendation never winds up being your responsibility if you clearly place the decision in the hands of others.

Just a recommendation to any journalist writing about a technical or commercial field.

This is really the Democratic Party in a nutshell. Corporations are driving the bus and the Progressive ideologists are running cover or providing the bait and switch in a cloud of smoke.

I have said on here several times Bush 2 almost bankrupted me in 2007-8. That is when I was approached by very wealthy types all Democrats and advised on changing with the way I did business with a heavy investment into commodities. These types don’t give a rats azz about social justice but they are opportunistic and they see and use these fanatical types to their advantage. They know full we these Progressives can’t adjust or compromise and they use it to gain leverage. The Inflation Production Act put so much money into Commodities markets it was insane. Everything runs on percentages and when inflation spiked so did those percentages. The book The Toyota Way is a blueprint to today’s business and markets.

BTW, FDR was a Socialist and had he lived there would have been a considerable amount of strife and bloodshed. DuPont and Ford hated him. If the same scenario happened today that happened in 1941 FDR would have been burnt toast. The patriotism of these men over rode their hatred and we know the rest.

Other than the fact that TIME has zero integrity or honor, the writer of this "piece" is hardly "right-wing".

Chantelle Lee:
  • bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley
  • graduated from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism
  • The Globe and Mail
  • The Press Democrat
  • NPR Frontline
  • The Daily Californian
  • North Bay News
  • uses pronouns

Lying used to get you an outright ban here, but apparently Protector Mod is still around, albeit with a different username.

And stop lying about your time in service. You're a fraud, we all know you are and so do you.

Pretty sure he was referring to the original article in the Washington Examiner as the right wing article. Don't think anybody could confuse TIME with right wing

Never said FDR wasn't a socialist. I just said he would have repealed the anti-trust exemption used to mass produce war products that had been under other companies' patents. Singer made 1911 .45ACP pistols. Union Switch and Signal made M1 30cal carbines. So did Rock-ola. Hell, I have a 1918 Smith and Wesson sewing machine which was made because surplus weapons following WWII about bankrupted S&W. Singer used an S&W patent from the S&W rotator for revolvers. S&W sold sewing machines under Singer's patent for one year until they were back on their feet.

Profits for the War Suppliers were never higher and the military industrial complex as Ike called them arose and became one of the chief Fed backers. What an unholy alliance that became. FDR's policies were bailed out by WWII. The worst legacy of FDR was Harry Dexter White who was very likely the best mole the Soviets ever had at the top level of our government. Alger Hiss was small potatoes by comparison.

First, accusing somebody of lying about having served in the U.S. military ... that's bold. If we can determine Mr. X didn't serve, I will thank you for exposing him. I would be curious. Maybe you have previously posted exposing him as a liar and I missed the post. My bad if so.

In contrast, if we can determine Mr. X did, in fact, serve (and honorably so) in the military ... I will be curious to see if you admit you were wrong and apologize.

As to the article ...

I believe Mr. X was referring to Peter Laffin (and not the Time reporter).

I posted previously.

Peter Laffin seems (I could be wrong) to be a credible, experienced and respected journalist.

The people claiming I am stolen valor already don’t trust any of the sources I post. Doesn’t matter if it is a Laffin opinion piece or the Time piece examining how presidents do during midterms when they have low approval ratings. Basically proving they are a part of the bubble they vehemently disavow being a part of.

As for my service, they can kiss my derrière, I have nothing to prove. They wouldn’t believe my sources anyway. Or maybe one of them uses the information in not on the up and up way. Nope not doing that.

I don't know you (obviously), so I don't know if you did or did not serve. But I'm not going to automatically believe (with no proof and like some on the right) that you are lying about your service just because you are a progressive (as if a conservative is incapable of lying on this message board). I'm open to the thought that you served — and did so honorably. And if you did — you have my full appreciation and respect for doing so, Mr. X.

RE: The MAGA bubble is about to burst
CNN polling since October 20 shows trends supporting the OP author.

Democrats have opened leads in battleground Senate races in Michigan, Texas, Maine and Kansas ahead of next week's midterm election, according to new polls from CNN, putting the party in a strong position to take control of the Senate.

In Michigan and Texas, Democrats' leads are outside the polls' margins of error, while the races in Maine and Kansas are closer and within the margins of error. Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats in the November 3 election to take over the Senate, where Republicans have a 53-47 seat advantage.

[Image: 92495186007-20261025-t-134003-z-19627452...natein.JPG]

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed holds a 7-point lead over Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan (49% to 42%), according to a poll of likely voters, in a race long seen as Republicans' greatest opportunity to flip a Democratic-held seat.

In Texas, Democrat James Talarico leads Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee, by 6 percentage points (49% to 43%). Texas last elected a Democratic U.S. senator in 1988, and President Donald Trump carried the state by nearly 14 points in the 2024 presidential election.

Democrat Troy Jackson leads Republican Sen. Susan Collins by four points (49% to 45%) in Maine, putting the Republican incumbent in jeopardy of losing a seat she has held for five Senate terms.

And in Kansas, where a Democrat hasn't won a Senate race since 1932, Democrat Adam Hamilton holds a four-point lead over Sen. Roger Marshall (49% to 45%), a CNN poll found. Trump carried Kansas in the 2024 election by 16 points.
....
The polls, conducted online and by phone, have margins of error ranging from plus or minus 4.2 to 4.7 percentage points.

In other Senate battlegrounds not polled by CNN, Democrats have widened their leads in North Carolina (+11%) and Georgia (+8), according to a Real Clear Politics average of recent polls. In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown leads Republican Sen. Jon Husted by nearly three points, according to polling averages.
....
Trump's popularity is underwater in many of the states he's visiting, according to the CNN polls of the four battlegrounds, suggesting that the president's barnstorm of rallies intended to fire up the MAGA base could backfire.

In Michigan, 66% of likely voters disapprove of Trump's job performance as president; in Texas, 59% disapprove; in Maine, 67% disapprove; and in Kansas, 57% disapprove.

The backlash comes as polls have consistently found Americans are concerned about the state of the economy and inflation, and place foremost blame on the president's policies for their cost-of-living challenges.

RE: The MAGA bubble is about to burst
Republicans are bracing for a brutal election night, convinced they’re set to face some previously unthinkable losses in deep-red Trump territory as key battleground races hang on a knife’s edge.

House Republicans are privately discussing not just if they’ll lose their majority, but by how many seats. Imperiled GOP incumbents in once safe districts have been begging party leaders for more money in the final few days to stem the bleeding, according to six people involved in internal conversations, granted anonymity to discuss them. Senate Republicans have found new cause to worry about contests in Ohio, Kansas and other red states.

“It could be quite a brutal evening,” said one senior Republican involved in the private conversations, who like others in this article was granted anonymity to speak candidly. “Once the dominoes start falling it becomes hard to stop them.”

One Republican strategist working on midterm races simply responded to a question about the environment with a video of a dumpster on fire that was being swept away by flood waters.

About to burst?

Top GOP officials and lawmakers have long known the political landscape would be bad, amid voter anger over the cost of living and aspects of Trump’s policy agenda. But they’re facing a worse position than they expected earlier this year, with less than one week until Election Day.

Republicans for weeks have worried that young men who’d voted for Trump, including white and Hispanic working class voters, will stay home amid disillusionment with high costs and the Iran war.
....
New fires have been popping up across the map just as soon as top GOP officials put out others. Trump canceled in-person rallies in deep-red Kansas and Iowa set for this weekend to instead hold a series of tele-rallies for GOP candidates in the final stretch.

“Any Democrats telling you they aren’t winning the Senate (besides) a couple of seats are sandbagging expectations,” the senior Republican said.

In Ohio, the race between GOP Sen. Jon Husted and former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown is still incredibly close in private and public polling. But Republicans have watched with horror as GOP governor nominee “Vivek’s [Ramaswamy’s] numbers have gone off a cliff” in the last few days after he ran an ad featuring Democrat Amy Acton’s estranged mother saying her daughter is a liar, according to the senior Republican and two others who saw the internal polling. Acton’s stepfather was charged with raping her when she was 12.

The headwinds across all of Ohio are deeply problematic for Republicans. They now believe embattled Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio)—who is facing child and domestic abuse allegations that he denies—will lose in a seat Trump won by double digits.

South Carolina has become another unexpectedly nailbiting race for Republicans, where political newcomer Sen. Darline Graham is facing a well-funded Democratic challenger.
....
In Louisiana, GOP groups have even started an eye-popping spending war in a safe red gerrymandered seat....

On the House side, Republicans are bracing for a brutal night.
....
Senate Democrats, meanwhile, are upbeat at their prospects, but public and private polling across close to the entire battleground map is running within the margin of error—meaning those states could break either way.

“I would rather be us than them. But if anyone tells you they know what’s going to happen, they’re full of sh-t,” one senior Senate Democratic operative said. “Everything is close.”

And some Republicans are taking solace in the fact that at least it’ll all soon be over.

“I can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” said a GOP strategist working on a campaign that is trending toward Democrats. “It might be a semi-truck, but at least I can see it.”

I entered delayed enlisted while attending a Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS). Now called Department of Defense Education Activity.

My job (MOS) was 29E Radio Repairer, which no longer exists. After being honorably discharged that MOS was divided up. Most became MSE (17E I think) operator/maintainers. Mobile subscriber equipment is a precursor to modern cellular networks. The rest became depot level electronics specialists, 94E.

My first duty assignment was in South Korea. Back then it was a “hardship” tour of 12 months. Wife or kids could not be brought with you (or sponsored in mil lingo). Now it is a 3 year tour if you bring family.

The unit I served on has also been reorganized since I was there. Back then Korea was separated into 6 zones but is now 4. I played a role in that reshuffling. 194th Maintenance Battalion has a new name and while the 520th Maintenance Company and the 348th Quartermaster company are still a part of it the 2 aviation maintenance companies that were a part of the battalion and attached to other commands now.

With my honorable discharge in hand I have used the GI Bill and College Fund benefits I earned to go to school. I have also used the benefit of a VA backed mortgage.

Respect begets respect. 04-cheers

If Vivek loses, the Ohio GOP deserves it. What are they nominating an Open Hindu in Ohio for.

Definitely sounds like GOP won't have a goodnight. Is it as bad as polls are saying? No, it never is. But the midterms always go opposite president. You'll hear GOP will never win again, don't buy it.
