Fire breaks out at 1950’s era nuclear weapons facility
The Savannah River National Laboratory in South Carolina had a fire break out at the facility.

The SRS processes and replenishes tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen used to boost the explosive yield of nuclear warheads. It also manages nuclear materials, treats radioactive waste, and carries out environmental cleanup.

One person was hospitalized. Emergency protocols were activated and the site was closed to incoming traffic, while nearby rail, river, and air traffic was restricted.

No detectable levels of contamination were found. All operations have returned to normal.
