Based on some summer info, this is my way early stab at the starting 5.

Loughnane
Bond
King
Young
Pinter

Once I hear/see more, Ill revise.

That would be a very poor defensive backcourt. That's why I would shy away from that logical pairing.

Curious what you know about Bond. I was told something completely opposite.

My 2 cents, neither Mike or Bond are short, and while neither are particularly stout for their size either (<200lb), they both have added about 10 lbs compared to last year's roster listings (taken with a grain of salt obviously...I don't think Ryan Williams is 6'4 for example). Loughnane has really long arms which I think makes him useful at the point of attack, plus he is a good facilitator. With King there too, either one can handle the ball and facilitate play. From what people have said here, hoping Bond can provide a scoring punch.

With Rashad back in the fold and playing some backcourt or tweener minutes, looks to be another big team, like we had during his first go around. I think the success of the team will come down to the rest of the backcourt guys if anyone can really elevate their game, maybe we can push beyond the "best of the dregs" area we've been hanging around in the past few years.

My understanding is that Bond is a scorer. A guard with a really good shot.

IMO, if he were a stalwart defender, he’d would’ve taken his talents elsewhere. But I could be wrong.

If he’s fully recovered from his Achilles injury, I’d consider having Newton start again because he’s our best backcourt defender when healthy.

@GoNUmbasketball assistant coach Matt Janning on King’s return and a big day for Northeastern basketball:

“His positive experience here [before] allowed him to trust us again… we’re all very excited about him joining a group we’re already optimistic about. “We as a staff came together [to discuss] the list of guys with 5th year eligibility… we all agreed [Rashad] was the only one we’d look to add. It started a few weeks back, and we’re grateful to get it done quickly.”

RE: Men's hoops 2026-27
KenPom preseason rankings are out.
NU ranked 253, the worst preseason ranking of the Coen Era, that's good for 11th out of 13 teams in the CAA. Though our average end-of-year rating since Tyson transferred is 262, so I suppose it is about par for the course. The league is paced by the usual suspects: UNCW, Charleston and Hofstra.

.jpg  Screenshot 2026-10-12 150300.jpg (Size: 91.4 KB / Downloads: 53) (sorry I cannot figure out how to simply paste an image here lol)

Overall, the CAA is ranked 16th out of 32 conferences, which is fairly typical in the post-Virginia centric era. Last year finished at 16, seems like things have stabilized since an all-time low of 26th (gross) in 2023 followed by 19th and 20th in '24 and '25.

RE: Men's hoops 2026-27
Have a few quick observations to share.

I am paraphrasing and filling in some blanks here, mainly because I don't take notes.

The backcourt is going to be a handful, we have some very complementary pieces that can run you off the court & hit the open 3. Playing D will be what takes us to the next level. Bond is going to be exciting. Geewiz, as you predicted in an earlier post, Goodwin when he is ready should be a difference maker. The accolades match the play. I really want to see Houlihan shoot and Icitovic's length. We really need bodies in the frontcourt to step up. While we have depth, it sounds like it will be an issue. There was some general excitement for the year. We are a different team that is being modeled from a philosophic change in the type of player our coaches are looking for. It should be obvious to the eye.

Sounds like he is dealing with a lower body issue that predates NU.

RE: Men's hoops 2026-27
With the caveat that I know this doesn't really mean much, I thought it was a little amusing that Rashad was voted first team all-CAA and yet we were picked to finish 11th out of 13 teams. If Rashad really comes in and plays at that level, we should be better than 11th OR if we do finish 11th, Rashad will end up on the 2nd team at best because he'll be penalized for being on such a bad team.

Looking back at the last few years of All-CAA teams, first teamers are usually the best players on the top 4-6 teams, or someone really special on a middle of the pack team. Such as when Rashad was a 1st teamer (and fringe POY candidate) two years ago and we finished 7th out of 14 with a 9-9 conference record.

It seems to me that in an age when most teams lose so many of their players every year preseason polls are even more worthless than ever, especially with regard to the teams that have a lot of unknowns like us.

Great point. William and Mary turned over basically their entire roster, didn't bring in a proven CAA player like Rashad and they were picked 6th, basically entirely off the strength of recent results by Coach Earl and his staff. Not that this is wrong, we've been dreadful lately and it is very easy to assume that will continue. But nobody really knows anything. I'll see you all at The Roof on November 2nd.
