E SAH E AHS! What's so hard about that? There's a bunch of crybabies out there and includes conservatives. Now, repeat it after me, E SAH E AHS...
Either way, I couldn't give a crap about the name. Maybe if we named one Lakitha, everyone would be happy, how about Jardiance, or Januvia or Lacretia? Better yet, let's give them Muslim names, afterall, they sure cause a lot of destruction.

Death and Destruction can't be humorous. Otherwise we could give them names like Little Man and Fat Boy if they were category 5. The names were once all women's names. Some dip decided to include men's names. The storms could have numbers and simplify it for everyone but because of the storm strength rating systems which use numbers that would get confusing. "But you said number 1 was a 5!" "No I said number 5 was a 1!" Frankly I'd get the picture if all I was told was a storm which could cause catastrophic destruction and loss of life had a high probability of hitting where I lived. I wouldn't give a damn about the name or number. But giving the weather has gotten lucrative because people don't watch the news anymore because of the propaganda on both sides of the political spectrum and bias news stories with deliberately altered points of view instead of facts leave people cold. But the weather draws everyone's attention, especially if some boob like Jim Cantori stands out in 100 mile an hour wind with driving rain while he holds onto a tree to report it. Advertising space for weather events is lucrative. And because of that we are now getting overhype for these storms and that's damned dangerous! This was barely a category 3 overhyped because they didn't have another event to rake in advertising dough with because of the El Nino in the Pacific. Hell, you would have thought that Camille, Katrina or Andrew were about to hit again and having an unpronounceable name for many meteorologists reporting didn't help any either. The massive evacuations were mostly unneeded. It boosted hotel business and used up lots of gasoline when prices were high. But unless you were right on the coast this storm wasn't going to kill you. We got 50 to 60 mile an hour gusts and I had to pick up a lot limbs the last two days but I didn't have a downed tree or any kind of damage.
The results of this overhyping is going to lead to a time when people no longer heed the warnings and a lot of them get killed because nobody will believe what those profiting from the overhype will be saying. Screw the names! Let's get back to actually talking about how the drop in pressure enhances the strength and telling people when a catastrophic storm is coming or telling them to put the plywood on the windows and hunker down because the one coming isn't that strong but could bring blowing debris and storm surge. And putting reporter out in the elements for effect will eventually lead to one getting killed on camera and I hope the liability suit neuters the damned network that did it.

I wish we would actually do away with the categories - I saw a lot of back and forth about Category 2 versus Category 3, like it is some sort of binary condition that determines how much damage one can expect. Let people focus on the peak wind speed instead.

Valid (and interesting) points, JR.
It seems hurricanes and rough storms are frequently (and purposely) overhyped by the media and rarely portrayed in an accurate and measured manner. And the public concerns resulting from this approach are troubling, as you note.
Excellent observation about having reporters standing in the fury of storms. Like you note, eventually one will be decapitated by a flying piece of metal debris and million of viewers will see the ghastly incident transpire live.
(On a side note, I was tempted to refer to you, in this one post only, as "the Al Roker of CSNBBS.com." But I'm concerned some posters might not realize I mean it as a compliment. So I'll refrain.)

I'd settle for Chet Huntley or Hugh Downs, or Even Edward R. Murrow, hell it could be anyone but Geraldo Rivera. He lost me at Al Capone's secret vault which had a broken chair and 1/5th empty liquor bottle in it and not even a rusty old gun. That was a bigger bust than even Jayne Mansfield!

I vote this as the top zinger posted on the board this weekend.

So leftists wrote the New Testament?
That would explain how Jesus was a hippie transexual who went around espousing Socialism and had his disciples beat up people who didn't give up their possessions by force.
Oh wait...

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems some of the cantankerous white men who post on this board are easily triggered by "black names."

Actually I know someone with access to the TN driver license data base. Those names are a source of many laughs and we have a group chat with a running list of them

The name in this series should be Isaiah....no no no...we cannot have anything that resembles a Jewish name...ok, how about Isaias? Was this how it went down?

Too many black parents try so hard to give their children distinctive names so as to create a vibe of "my child counts," "my child is unique," "my child is special." There is almost a "desperation" to be different. It would be kind of humorous if it were not so unfortunate. Some of these names, and the mindset that drove the selection of them, are simply ludicrous.
So I have no problem with old white man like myself being critical of this black cultural dynamic.
However, if I'm going to scoff at black parents for doing this, I need to be consistent and, as such, roll my eyes when white parents do the same thing. The mindset behind the giving of names that suggest animals, nature and hunting (Buck, Colt, Track, Scout, Chase, Gunnar, Skye, Gage, etc.) is particularly noteworthy. The naming dynamic is not as over-the-top with white parents as it is with black parents — but it exists.
And now that I have insulted million of black and white parents, I need to take a look in the mirror and scoff for calling myself "Bill Dazzle." Talk about absurd.

I'm a cantankerous white man who has half-black cousins (on both my mother's and father's side of the family). This is another thing we share in common.
I'm not into science fiction literature (like you) but I do like science fiction film. And we both cheer for the Memphis Tigers.
See, despite some of our political differences ... we can get along well.
