There's a price for everything. But I get the case for holding on to him with that contract (although that also makes him more valuable to other teams so...) If this team can make the playoffs (and I think they can), you hope Hunter is the type of pitcher who can maybe carry you a long way on his back in the post-season (e.g. Rijo back in the good old days....)

i was going to mention the contract, but i just don't trust him. never staying healthy is only part of it. let's just say i don't view him as an ace. since we haven't a lack of quality arms (heard tejay antoine is still a thing), let's see what else we got and get another bopper. get one of those athletic's sluggers. ain't they a candidate to surprise?

Hunter's been around awhile, but he's still only 26. Baseball wisdom says a pitcher's prime years are from age 26-30 and especially 27-29. My price to trade him would be VERY high.
A's hit rock bottom in 2023 and seem to be rebounding and spending money.

RE: 2026 Redlegs Season Thread
I’ve been critical at times on Greene. Consistency and availability have been issues. That said, Hawk makes a good point about his age. The guy has shown electric stuff and I’d rather they keep him than trade him. He’s getting an MRI so it’s not like he needs Tommy John surgery. Let’s hope this is a minor setback. It’s a long season.

Hoping it's a minor setback of course, but I've learned the hard way not to count on it.

That reference was about being a Cincinnati fan rather than Hunter specifically.

RE: 2026 Redlegs Season Thread
Well, typical injury-cursed Reds organization. Greene is rising to the Ken Griffey, Jr. level at least from a frequency standpoint. The staff will have to hold serve until the all-star break...
Quote:(Updated: 3/10/26 at 3:45 p.m. ET) Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove bone chips and loose bodies. According to reports, he's likely to miss 14-16 weeks and won't be back on the field until sometime in July.
Greene said himself last week that he felt discomfort in his elbow over the final month of the 2025 season. It even came to light recently that he received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection last October at the behest of Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
Greene's acknowledgment of this lingering injury has Reds Country incensed, and fans are beginning to ask a simple question: Why he didn't have this surgery during the offseason? Did the Reds medical team screw up again? Based on recent comments from Reds manager Terry Francona, he was unaware of Greene's injury.
“He never told me (directly) any of that,” Francona told Cincinnati reporter Charlie Goldsmith. “I know he has mentioned it to (pitching coach Derek Johnson). He was always telling me he was good. I liked the way he was pitching. The trainers, we’re never going to send somebody out there if they shouldn’t pitch or play. Ever.”
Greene's inability to post has been a constant source of consternation for the Reds fanbase. He started just 19 games last season due to a lingering hamstring injury. The right-hander missed three weeks, then suffered a setback that kept him on the IL for more than two months.
Greene has repeatedly stated that one of his primary goals is to be on the mound consistently, but he's failed to live up those expectations every season. Across his four big-league seasons, Greene's averaged just 22.8 starts per year and 123.8 innings pitched.
There were various trade rumors throughout the offseason, many of which cited Greene's durability as a big reason why Cincinnati was entertaining the idea of trading their All-Star starter. The Reds front office eventually quelled those rumors, but one has wonder if they were waiting to see whether or not another organization was ready to blow them away with an offer they couldn't refuse.
A few Cincinnati sports reporters have questioned Greene's desire and durability in the past. The Reds fireballer appeared to take exception to at least one beat reporters comments earlier this spring saying they were a "defamation of character".
But until Greene can put these constant injury concerns in the rearview mirror, that narrative is going to continue, and it should. There's no longer any need fans or the media to refer to Greene as the Reds ace. An ace answers the bell — something Greene's failed to do.
Greene Out 4 Months

I tend to look at "injury prone" v "durable" as mostly just a function of sample sizes and a matter of time when it comes to pitchers. They are often durable - until they aren't. Or they can seem injury prone - until they don't. It's just part of the game with pitching. Although there comes a time when it can just beat a player down (let alone the fans). I get and share the frustration, but I'm not "down" on Hunter.

Green is a talent but I've always said you don't draft hard throwing pitchers in round 1 who were year round travel ball phenoms since they were 4th graders and not expect lots of surgeries. Each elbow and shoulder only has so many reps in them in a lifetime.
Hopefully this will be an easy fix but cleaning up loose bodies in an elbow means stuff is grinding and breaking down.
Also, I personally don't trust Doc Hollywood. I was a patient many moons ago. Not my favorite saw bones.

Hunter needs surgery. Singer leaves a game early due to blisters a few days ago and today Lodolo has the same thing. It all seems like deja vu.
I can't blame the Reds, or any team really, for hoarding starting pitching.

Lodolo to the IL and will miss 2 starts at a minimum.

The Reds need to put him on a masonry crew this offseason. His blister problems will be a thing of the past.
