[News] Big foods fight back against MAHA

in a rare bright spot for this administration-MAHA seems to be making some non-idiotic waves that actually focus on health and not fear.

congrats to West Virginia, California, Texas and others for passing common sense legislation regarding ingredients in food.

I wish my state would join the fun, but big food is well entrenched and probably paying everybody sufficient bribes to keep the status quo.

If a few more states will pass similar measures, companies will make the financial decision to just make their product meet the highest standard rather than try to make different products in different markets.

One thing we need to make sure is that the FDA and their byzantine bureaucracy and poorly funded department aren't put in charge of all this, it will die especially with Trump dismantling enforcement arms of regulatory agencies and not giving the funding needed to properly enforce regulations.

The idea expressed at the end might be feasible for giving the FDA the $$ it needs to properly vet the added ingredients.

You do know that none of the actions against the food and health care industry would happen if Trump weren't in office, right? The Trump administration is getting rid of rules that are too strict and slow down the growth of important technologies or make it harder to identify common-sense solutions to problems we all face. Many of the rules are so strict that they don't make sense and are actually barriers. They don't do anything except give alphabet agencies more power to make policy, which is basically the same as law. As an example, in 2024 the ATF handed down new rules and regulations regarding certain firearm accessories, and those who did not adhere to these rules faced fines and criminal penalties. The ATF has no statutory authority, yet the rules they generate carry the force of law when the laws governing such are deemed vague or unclear using Chevron deference.

These rules have been challenged in court, with the ATF being named in several lawsuits. The ATF claimed that Chevron deference applied. You can look that up on your own. The new rules and processes were challenged in "Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless, Inc. v. Department of Commerce," and the SCOTUS overruled Chevron in 2024. The court said that courts must use their own judgment when interpreting laws and can't just follow what an agency says if a law is unclear.

The kinds of actions we see from the MOB admin that force alphabet agencies to stay in their own lanes wouldn't ever happen on a democrat's watch. The problems that Trump and his team have recognized, addressed, and resolved have never even been taken into consideration by anyone on your side; all you loons have ever done is make matters worse.

This is not true. States were passing laws all the time on food and healthcare, MAGA dummies were usually talking about the "nanny state" anytime they did though.

https://foodindustryexecutive.com/2024/0...gulations/

The trump administration deregulating federal watchdog groups is not a victory. We need to strengthen them against the multinational conglomerates.
Overturning the chevron deference is going to have negative consequences too as it gives individual judges too much wiggle room for jurisprudence and conglomerates time to hold off unfavorable rules in court for long periods.

The plan of big industrial conglomerates is always to keep the states out of things, and then focus on lobbying lawmakers and a revolving door between their group and regulators to keep everything friendly.

as to the 2nd bolded part, wrong wrong wrong (really never needs to be said with an unsupported MAGA assertion). Democrats have constantly introduced legislation vis a vis food safety and healthcare that is constantly punted by republicans (and democrats) and goes nowhere.

As I said, a rare bright spot for this administration.

Obviously, having 50 different state rules is a disaster for the economy. That's the reason for the commerce clause.

I don't know about drugs, but we have had common sense rules and reasonable regulation in foods. RFK is using an IT person as his nutrition adviser and his own carnivore diet to set health policy. Its nuts. And they are getting rid of really good people and replacing them with people who don't even know what the agency does or, in RFK's case, what Riboflavin is.
