You must be joking. What can he have up his sleeve with zero concept of a passing offense and a QB who might have the worst arm of any QB I've seen in my 55 seasons of watching Rice football.

It's as if you've been waiting for the opportunity to trash the coach and the offense, or something. You must have been seething mad that you weren't able to do it last weekend. Well, congratulations. You're big moment has arrived!

The only reason Rice won against Louisiana is that the Cajuns gave it (particularly that one wide receiver). And, it's not as if the Rice offense was anything but poor.

I wouldn't expect you to state otherwise. You'd probably be upset if we made a bowl game in Abell's first season.

I'm encouraged. I predicted a 35-17 loss, so losing to UH comes as no surprise to me. We all know that they're more talented, and that we're only in year 1 with our new coach and new offense.

Other than Memphis, UH is the most talented team we face this season. I think we're doing fine. The defense is great, and the offense will only get better. Naysayers get your digs in now.

I'm very encouraged by our defense and by our team's effort.
Offense absolutely must develop new plays (passing) in the next couple of weeks.

Anyone can see five more wins on our schedule. Who's to say what happens against Memphis and USF?

Rice had a good drive and good defense in the 1st quarter. Wishing the owls best of luck. Hope you win the aac.

I was thinking the same thing. The Bulls upset Florida today, 18-16, in Gainesville.

Also, Army just tipped and intercepted a K-State pass to seal its 24-21 upset (in Manhattan, KS). So the Black Knights are likely far from an automatic Owl win.

(But maybe those two teams are not as talented, which was Ourland's assertion.)

This feels like a Bloomgren repeat. I always thought this hire could be a disaster or maybe we get lucky and it turns out okay. We have scored 14 the first game and nine this game - great offense.

I got 28 minutes of hope tonight. I've been through whole seasons without that much.

Utterly unacceptable performance tonight. Playcalling completely uninspiring and deluded.

Scott Abell, you’re gonna have to show me…

Just awful. Fvck this. Especially in front of a massive student section…

At CBS Sports, the spread is 12.5.

So, once again, a two play difference, more or less.

About what we faced - and overcame - last week.

I predicted a 6-point spread on another board.

I will predict a 3-point Rice win this week, to improve on our 2-point win* last week.

Prognostically speaking: Rice 23, You of Hou 20.

I have the final tonight on my card as Rice 23, Houston 21.

Connors still plays for us, right? Why was he wearing a different shirt tonight ?

03-wink

Put his 14 over in Rices column where they belong and otherwise my prediction was spot on again!

RE: Beat UH
I listened to most of the game on the radio. Was driving. My general impressions after two games.

1) I'm generally impressed by the defense. Defense game up 28 points today, 12 last week. This week we played a former #1 QB recruit (and a starter at Texas A&M). Last week was against a former #5 QB recruit (who I saw is out for the season injured; hate to hear that). We've played talented QBs, and for large stretches held them in check. We've given up < 300 yards passing TOTAL in two games. Even the run defense held up well. Outside of the Connors TD run at the end of the half, UH had 37 carries for 150 yards. That'll play most weeks. We should continue to have a defense that keeps us in most games.

2) The offense has been mildly disappointing so far. I'm no scheme expert. Some on the board seem disenchanted already w/Abell's offense. People have also complained about Jenkins' throwing. The two seem they could be related to me. In the (youtube) videos I watched of Davidson's offense, there was a fair amount of chunk plays downfield throwing. Last year, Davidson averaged 8.8 yards per attempt passing. So far this year, we're at 4.5. How much of the lack of consistency running is simply due to to our current inability to pass (and is that scheme or talent)? It also seems like Jenkins has not been a factor running the ball yet, which has surprised me a little.

The amount of ink spilled on Abell's timeout before the half seems ridiculous (admittedly the vast majority is from WRC). For years, the complaint was that Bailiff, then Bloomgren played too conservatively. So Abell gets UH way behind the sticks, D has been lights out the entire half and decides to take a chance. Stop them, we get a decent return on the punt and maybe end up w/the ball w/in 25 yards of FG range w/1:00 left. Seems reasonable enough of a risk. Definitely not something that is just clearly an idiotic move.

In the end, most folks would've pegged us at 0-2. I would've liked to hang w/UH longer. I would like the offense to play better. Given Abell's history of successful rushing, I'm willing to have some patience there, and I would hope we start to see some more prolific rushing outputs over the next month. But man...tough customers here.

When your most liked and shared social media posts of 2023 and 2024 (and now 2025) are the reveals of the powder blue uniforms, you make sure you keep wearing them. The fans like them, we've beaten ECU and UTSA in them, they're just a one game thing each season.
j

That is correct.

In 2023 Rice wore the powder blue vs. E. Caro. and won 24-17.

Last year Rice wore the powder blue vs. UTSA and won 29-27.

All that, plus they are a HTown Takeover Thing
We thought of it first and got permission.

UH just jumped the shark and wore theirs first without asking anyone in the NFL or the Oilers.

I think it’s flippin awesome. Luv ya Blue and Gray.

Wasn’t the “Htown Takeover” a UH slogan?

Performances like this won’t help with getting fans to cone back.

The offense’s inability to eat up clock and reduce the number of UH possessions seemed the story of the game. And as OwlWKIF noted, we had a big crowd in blue that saw the mess that ensued in the last 31 minutes of the game.

That Abell offense was hard to watch and needs much work. The next two opponents should provide that opportunity for the offense to improve.

The TO to end the half wasn’t really consequential as UH had one to burn still.

Now, had out TO allowed them to run an extra play…

FAU, Charlotte, Prairie View, UTSA, North Texas, UCoon, and UAB are all still ahead.

Based on what I've seen through only two games from all of those schools, and Rice, they could all be wins. Memphis is beatable at home.

Agree with Picrig. Seems like Owl fans have complained so long, they cannot break the habit. Probably would complain about the inconvenience of winning the lottery.
