Everyone seems to have a good landing spot save UTA…

Could this be an impetus for adding football?

If being in an FBS conference wasn't impetus enough, I don't know if this changes it.

If getting kicked out of an FBS conference wasn't impetus enough, I don't know if this changes it.

If not having a great option after getting kicked out wasn't impetus enough, I don't know if this changes it.

Sadly, getting reduced in the conference pecking order likely won't be impetus enough.

When TCU was left at the altar after the Southwest Conference failed. They took a long hard look in the mirror. They took a long, stable and steady rise to eventually play in a national title game in football while all other sports have become quite competitive. UTA used to consistently get the better of TCU in volleyball and baseball, has two wins in six tries on football and were 3-4 against them in men's bball at one point. Now, other than a baseball winning one out of every three or four games, UTA doesn't touch TCU in any sport.

Same with SMU. For decades after the death penalty, they treated football and sports in general at arm's length. About a decade and a half ago, some boosters stepped up and said a new stadium wasn't enough. Now they translated their football success to an ACC membership and are doing well in men's bball early in conference play.

Meanwhile, UTA looks in the mirror, sees the fire and says everything is fine.

as they are a about to devote 60 million to add more tenured professors.

My hope is ACU and Tarleton move together. Somewhere. Anywhere.
Big Sky, MVC( make the MVFC all sports). UTA to the OVC. Anywhere but the Southland.
The MWC talk is ridiculous. CUSA is a big reach. They don’t want us. It’s not a lot of fun going where you aren’t wanted. Some of y’all may not remember the nasty welcome we got from the WAC schools. Most are gone now. Or going. Kinda funny.

The WAC had a chance to be awesome, but we’ve been talking about FBS since we got here and would leave it at any moment to join FBS. When did Tarleton ever talk about being a FCS power? Never, just wanted to move to FBS. Here they are trying to blame “terrible leadership” even though their leadership, is partly to blame.

Tarleton leadership hired Luck and Thornton and those guys work for the presidents of WAC schools!!

You're not wrong. Tarleton has had a heavy hand in all things WAC 2.0 from the get-go. Hurley and Hurd had a good thing cookin', then the wheels started to fall off when everything we thought we knew about realignment went all ape sh*t bananas..The good, the bad, and the ugly...we must own it. Our Prez is Chairman of the Board, for Pete's sake. Still, I like that we are not sitting idly by and letting others decide our fate, or tucking tail for the Southland. If the WAC indeed folds Tarleton definitely has to take a left hook on the chin before we move on to greener pastures.

Far from “the WAC didn’t focus enough on football,” I think this was kind of in a range between “going for that is the only way we’ll survive” and “the FBS attempt is the WAC’s white whale.”

It was a gamble. It didn’t work, and that’s not a crime. The only thing that might be close to a crime is if the WAC went this direction without having a firm offer from a media source for something close to, say, the paycheck C-USA receives. Everything that has happened from the OU/UT move on has been “show me the money, dammit!” Unless you want to try something really “innovative” like midnight football after Friday, I don’t see how you’d make bank. And there’s obviously no guarantee that what I just threw out there, never mind anything with even slightly more sense, would drag fundage from the media moneybags.

OVC is just as bad competitively as the Southland without the regional schools to build a rivalry with in the coming years. Little Rock would be the best and neither moved the needle much when we were battling the other for basketball supremacy in the mid-2010's in the SBC.

The ASUN would be a step above both of those, but Central Arkansas would be the nearest school. Neither seemed to draw at the others place when we shared a conference home.

The Summit has been mentioned many times. We've played Oral Roberts a lot and draw above average in some sports. No one else is even a state away.

The MVC would be the best conference home competitively, but with Missouri State leaving, the nearest school is several states away.

Without football, there are just no good options in the conference shuffle.

Best case scenario for UTA is all seven schools stay together where the revenue is not split into too many mouths and the chances for postseason play are increased in all sports for everyone. But it is a prisoner's dilemma. Risk being left with nothing if one of the seven leave or control your destination.

That’s stupid. A 7 team conference won’t last long. In order to create a league basketball schedule, you would have to play every team in conference 3 times.

I agree on this one. The only way for the WAC to survive would be to pull enough DII schools up, but not sure there are enough that are ready and that brings up issues of probably having more than one in transition. Honestly, my best case scenario would be for UTA, Tarleton and ACU to go to the Summit and have the MVFC allow us to play football there. If not, then continue football in the UAC coop. Many people pull UALR into this scenario, which is fine with me as they add a good pairing for UTA and Denver.

This guy believes Tarleton is heading to either the Mountain West or CUSA in 2026

Gives his idea of where other might be going

I believe the DEI hire Thornton resulted in DIE for the WAC

Not much new really, just more people are picking up the story giving their guesses on where everyone ends up. The one thing he said that I haven't heard was that things would begin to take place after the NCAA Tourney. If true, that would point more to who is moving.

The only scenario that I can see to end the WAC is the one that has already played out before.

Sunbelt loses members backfill with CUSA

CUSA loses members backfill with WAC & ASUN

JMHO

But this time the WAC unfortunately doesn’t have any extra capacity to absorb the loss of even one save Cal Bapt

Your post is stupid. The NCAA is chock full of independents and small conferences making it work. I didn’t say it was ideal, but given the alternatives of going to I-AAA, one-bid conferences with a bloated membership, more money and postseason opportunities seems better. The Ivy has done eight for decades.

Eventually, a school would want to join a conference like that, be it a call up or a different defector.

But it still the prisoners dilemma.

RE: GCU/SU/CBU
since they dont seem interested in adding football, UTA's only path upward is to become good in the sports that they do sponsor and try to pull a Wichita state or Gonzaga and maybe get an invite to a conference of schools with a similar academic focus. NIL and pay for play will quickly eliminate any hopes for schools at our level to move very far up the ladder. the WAC can do without Seattle and it makes sense for CBU to join a more western conference. GCU seems to have the money and ability to be a little better than the rest of us so they might be an attractive get for some conference but maybe they will stay where they have an easier path to the auto bids. the rest of us might have to back fill with ORU and maybe West Texas A_M or Angelo state. they both have their own regional following and facilities are not too bad. there was a time when West Texas state had some football success.

Conference realignment

Big West is targeting Utah Valley and Cal baptist. Summit is an option for UV as well.

The Western Athletic Conference may soon cease to exist if the above happens.

West Coast Conference is active to replace Gonzaga.

There are too many scenarios for WAC schools departures to even attempt to respond to any or all of them.

I gave the most likely scenario earlier in this thread.

Does not mean it will happen anymore than any of these other rumors.

I think the WAC is living on borrowed time now. Getting rid of Thornton gave them ( School Prez's) a great chance to save the league and hire a commish worth a damn, but instead just elevated Thorntons useless staffer to the position saying they just surrendered and were all looking for an out. They are now just wanting someone to leave to give them all an excuse to bail and blame it all on the next one to leave. Most likely Cal Baptist or Tarleton. Sad really, the WAC is worth saving, but the ineptitude of the conference admin is blatantly obvious. They could at least make an effort to get another school. UALR and ETAM would be acceptable at this point. But this admin is beyond hopeless and the end is near.

I think some of you guys are not very smart or fail to realize certain things. It’s laughable that you would think it’s even possible for UALR or East Texas A&M to leave their conference to join the WAC. Tarleton St will leave the first chance they get, why would any team want to join this conference knowing that?

It's so nice to hear from a Cardinal fan. Yes, I agree it makes no sense for anybody to contemplate joining the Titanic WAC. It makes more sense for the WAC to join somebody else. The obvious choice would be the Southland. However, there seems to be some kind of institutional superiority complex going on here that makes the WAC fans reject the "SouthWAC" or "WACland" idea out of hand.

Probably the most open-minded are the ACU and UTA fans, as both of these schools were charter members of the Southland, along with Lamar, Trinity and Arkansas State.

Somehow, we will survive the next round of reorganization, with or without the WAC.

UTA may have to spread their sports teams over a bunch of different conferences.

That's very insightful. Of course, whichever conference wants our basketball teams will likely be an all-sports conference. Our lack of football will severely narrow our prospects. Conversely, if we add football, we will have several interested suitors, perhaps including the Slimebelt, MountingWest and ConfuseA.

It would be nice to have a conference in our time zone with historic rivals.

Well the SLC doesn’t have a lot going for it, except for regionality. UNO is supposedly in terrible shape. At least schools there do not have far flung travel. The travel definitely isn’t as exciting as other leagues, but it is what it is. I can see why WAC schools would have issues joining; especially if you once claimed to be above the SLC.

UIW knew they couldn’t compete in the WAC, especially in non-football sports. The WAC just ran out of schools to bring in, along with vast travel, and constant membership changes, didn’t help their cause.
