Yep. In the "2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread":

Any update on 2019 guys that were offered at some point (or that Rice is looking at)? I checked in on the names below. None of them have committed yet, but none seem to have any recent Rice-related news either.
Verbal Commits shows offers to the following:
PT Trae Broadnax, 6'3" from Florida
SG Cameron Cohn, 6'4" from Houston (nothing on Twitter connecting him to Rice since May 2017)
SG Anderson Kopp, 6'5% from Utah
PF David Skogman, 6'10" from Wisconsin, took official visit to Rice in Aug/Sept 2018
247Sports says that Rice's only outstanding offer is to Skogman.

One of the assistant coaches tweeted out a reference that we have picked up someone else (not Broadnax - I think an earlier tweet was in reference to that).
SMU just lost two more players, including their leading scorer (Phelps). I’d be surprised if we get Phelps but we will see.
Might be Aaron Powell, a point guard from Southern California who originally committed to Cal Poly but decommitted from there after a coaching change. Someone else can investigate further.

Yes. Powell twitter account now X says Rice 2024. War room is blowing up.
Interesting to see if any of the SMU players come along.

Rather fun seeing the entire team built this fast. Every day a new player. A bit like draft day/week/month.

An actual point guard? It seems like it's been 10 years since we've had one of those. I like it.

I believe Broadnax is a point guard too. It seems we now have TWO point guards.

We are one of seven finalists for Deywilk Tavares, a 6-2 guard from Delaware State (the MEAC rookie of the year). Other finalists are VCU, College of Charleston, Wichita State, Colorado State, UAB and Tulane.
Averaged 13.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists a game. I’ve seen him listed as a point guard but I’d say it’s more accurate to call him a combo guard. Is from New Jersey. Will have three years of eligibility if we get him.

Sounds like UAB is in the lead appearing on your list twice.

Looks like the newest pickup is Wyoming sophomore Caden Powell. 6-10 forward from Waco who averaged 5.4 points and 4.6 rebounds in 20.5 minutes (starting 31 out of 32 games). Struggled staying out of foul trouble, which he'll need to work on. But sounds like a very solid interior defender and rebounder.

Unsurprisingly, Lanier exploring all angles. New offer out to JuCo PG Dylan Williams. 15.0 points and 5.6 assists on 44/40/78 splits. Slew of other mid-major offers. Played for Triton, who ended the year ranked as the #7 D1 JuCo.

So we now think we are at seven announced scholarship players, three returning walk-ons and the coaches son who may or may not be on scholarship. And quite a few offers out there pending.
Looking more and more likely that Ufochukwu will be the only returning scholarship player.

I am also seeing Jeff Martin is leaving St. John’s to come to Rice as director of basketball ops (and will be in charge of the NIL program). Was in a similar vein for Rick Pitino.
Katy native. Played at LeTourneau (and also Murray State before that).

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Yep, 7/8 scholarship players depending on Lanier (so either 5 or 6 open scholarships). I can't imagine either of Peakes or Perkins being a contributor - if they were good enough for minutes they would have seen some this year. Breakdown is something like:
Point Guards - Broadnax, Powell
2 Guards and Wings - Amos, Lanier, Batson
Forwards - Patterson
Paint Bigs - Powell, Ufochukwu
Still plenty more needed to be competitive next year. Powell is a high schooler and you never know whether they're going to be immediately ready. Not enough shooting/scoring on the roster yet. I've been high on Ufochukwu but we still definitely need one or two more bigs. Solid start all in all.

Second SMU player to follow Lanier is Denver Anglin. He's a sophomore who redshirted this past season. Spent his first year at Georgetown where he played 6.8 minutes per game. He was a borderline top-100 recruit back in 2022.

Lanier had prospective two more high school recruits in for visits yesterday.

Anglin too. So that’s three (although Broadnax could certainly be a scoring guard). Lanier is doing a great job rebuilding the roster although we do need some more size. Hopefully the door is not closed on some of the 2023-24 Owl bigs returning.

BTW, Lanier mentioned to me when I asked that he had a good conversation with Dawes, but that he wanted to return to Utah, where he grew up (before spending his final 2 high school years in Houston) and where he still has most of his family. It appears Mason was lured by the NIL money.

Huseinovic looks to be returning, which I think is good news. Even if he's relegated to more of a bench role, he's an elite shooter who can give you solid minutes. Think that means we have 3 more scholarships open. Still think we need at least one more big and a scoring guard.
