RE: WBB Recruiting

Interesting twist as she’s already played 4 full seasons and then 6 games this season before quitting the team. Given our history of waivers and the NCAA, I would be surprised to see her get this season back and become eligible for us next season.

Mettlen @ DNR Wrote:Scott has played five seasons of college basketball and will need approval from the NCAA to play for the Dukes next season. O’Regan said he expects it to be granted as Marshall is supporting Scott’s request for a medical hardship waiver.

That is a VERY interesting get, especially since Marshall is supporting her request for a medical hardship waiver. She's a damn good player.

Sounds like there are more announcements to come.

Not sure how to evaluate the quality of Daviane. Looks like she played in the Euroleague. 4 years of availability? Age of 17, so I guess so.....

PG Zakiya Stephenson from Ole Miss has committed to the Dukes. She started 5 games and averaged 12 minutes as a true freshman on an NCAA Tournament team. Was the 2023 Class 5 VA Player of the Year out of Princess Anne and a top 100 prospect. Seems like a good get with 3 years of eligibility.

Sounds like a solid addition.

Funny thing: first thing I thought when I saw her name was “that sounds like ‘mindundi’,” which is a slang term in Spain for someone insignificant who has no power or influence. Then I noticed she was coming from Spain. Hopefully she’s no mindundi!

RE: WBB Recruiting
I ran into a few girls from Sweden yesterday that are in town for a WBB tournament. Seems they were told there would be plenty of D1 coaches/scouts to watch them play, I asked them if they're playing at JMU or the AUBC and they weren't. Turns out they were playing the games at EMU and they were pi$$ed to say the least, about the venue and the D3 coaches in the house. One of the girls has committed to High Point but the others are looking for offers as well. Wonder if Coach O or his staff got out there to watch.

There are at least a dozen D1 arenas worse than EMU’s. Its nothing close to JMU’s arena but way worse out there.

Maybe so, I’ve never been there and had to look it up, my high school gym was nothing special but nicer than this one.

I'd argue your high school gym was incredibly nice then. Because when I was playing in high school (note this was less than a decade ago) no arena we played in had chairback seats, seating on three sides or rims that didn't hang from the ceiling.

It's certainly not a bad field house, but it's not worth travelling from another continent to in order to play for D3 coaches. It sounds like the team was sold on one thing and is not getting what they were promised (and what they thought they paid for).

This happens in the Music world, too. I'll get emails offering to take my students on a trip to Europe to perform in great concert venues with large audiences, and while some companies can deliver on that, there are many who will then start "downsizing" things once your check is cashed.

Very true. Seems they are on a barnstorming tour and were at much nicer places with more accomplished coaching staffs in attendance. Some of these girls play for the national team and are looking for a D1 scholarship, not to travel 1/2way around the world to pay their own way to play D3 ball.

The portal is now closed. There's your 24-25 team. Tynes will get a chance to play away from the basket like Barnes. You have a couple of post players, Barnes/Tynes and a lot of guards. Gonna be some running and gunning track meets next season! I'm guessing if there are any ships left to give, it will be to a Barnes type player.

Was wondering if anyone has heard any rumblings about a replacement for Coach Neil and I guess also Lexi?

Yes. The roster on the website has been updated, at least with the returning players. 9 listed, and 4 new additions per this thread. They could sign 1 or 2 more if they are alloted the 15 limit.
