Quote:McCarthy won 216-212, convincing enough of his GOP colleagues who had voted against him to support his bid. The six remaining Republicans who withheld their support for McCarthy up to the final ballot — Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Eli Crane of Arizona, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Bob Good of Virginia and Matt Rosendale of Montana — voted present.

Btw, the House has been voting with 434 members almost all week. The final seat was to be filled by a VA D, but he passed away 3 weeks after the Nov election. A special election will be held in Feb to select a replacement.

McCarthy is worthless and this will be tumultuous time because he has zero leadership ability. I hope I’m wrong, I hope he grows a pair, but I am not optimistic.

Congratulations to Speaker "my Kevin" McCarthy, it took longer than electing the last few Popes but he did finally get his gavel. It's going to be very interesting to see what he is allowed to do with it now, I suspect we're all going to learn a lot more about the "discharge petition", and we'll likely see the first federal government shutdown since the December 2018 - January 2019 record-long 35 day stoppage.

They could shut the thing down forever as far as I am concerned. If the fat cat bureaucrats had the integrity to keep things that mattered going and shut down the parts that are superfluous wastes—like their own jobs—the country would continue to run just fine. But those worthless a-holes won’t do that because they are aware of how it would turn out. So they would find the way to shut down those things that would inflict maximum pain while keeping their own cushy “jobs” going.

RE: No Majority In First Vote for Speaker of the House
I'm not quite sure what the major malfunction with McCarthy was as yeah, he's no Reagan but it's not like he was Liz Cheyney incarnate or something.

I don't fault the people who had objections to him voicing them or voting how they felt, but the lack of a clear opposition nominee by them was rather immature looking. It was like bunch of kids that didn't want to eat their broccoli.

And if the new speaker orders Lauren Bobert to get taken over a knee spanked for being a very bad girl... I'm his man.

I liked the altercation between Rogers and Gaetz, and Rogers having to be physically restrained.

What a shitshow.

yeah ... some may view it as the 'fiery heart(h) show' for their voting bloc ... from a personal perspective, it simply made 'em look silly knowing they were in front of the camera...

of course, we've both been accused of that 'forked tongue' that can draw (f)ire as well ... 03-wink

hence, the 'divinity' of politics...

I have a feeling this is only going to get worse before it gets better for the Reps. McCarthy and co. took a big perception hit these past weeks, and they're going to try to respond in the only way they know how: a show of strength. The only problem is, strength is only as strong as your foundation and the Republican foundation has some pretty glaring cracks.

The only reason they don't want a government shutdown is because we would get to see how little they actually do.

Exactly. There is so much money baked in the cake the country could run for 10 years without any new legislation. Government shut down is a made up joke as long as both house of Congress get paid during one.

No Majority In First Vote for Speaker of the House
I was thinking of that yesterday. What do we actually NEED any of these ******** for anyway? If 90% of DC just ceased to exist I think the country would function just fine and probably be better off.

The only thing republicans have going for them is that they are not evil bastards like the democrats.

Is worthless better or worse than evil?

I think we've learned over the last few years that most Republicans are just as evil as Dems.

I still think that R's are more stupid and incompetent than truly evil. Stupid party versus evil party is a helluva conundrum. And stupid had all its stupidity on full display from the 2022 midterms up to today.
