It happens and I think you guys will be fine. Doughty, White, Zappe, Reed. You guys clearly have a good system in place.

I mentioned it in another thread. Live by the portal, die by the portal. It sucks for this one game in particular, but its not like the portal has been bad for us to this point.

Based on Reeds Twitter Page, I would expect him to play bowl game. I would tell all of them bye, but I am sure Helton is not going to do that. Even with Reed its going to be an uphill battle to knock off a highly motivated USA team.

And they hate WKU and MT.

Should love us, so they could win All-Sports Bubba Cup trophy again.

RE: Austin Reed has entered the transfer portal
MT lost its entire offensive line prior to this past season to the portal and P5. And our best returning defensive player. Who knows if this would have elevated Stock from his typical 6-7 win season, but it certainly doesn't help. The combination of the portal and NIL is highly destructive to collegiate competition.

RE: Austin Reed has entered the transfer portal
The portal makes it so important to have a good culture in your sports programs and good relationships with the players and their position coach. That only makes the coaches' jobs that much more difficult to be able to coach them like they need to be coached, but not tick them off to the point of just wanting to leave.

So far, I think the portal has been very good for many G5 teams and think it will continue to be. Yes, we will lose some of our better players from time to time, but the numbers that are being brought in should more than offset that.

Portal will hurt those 60% that don't land on another team and may hurt those that don't make it to the NFL.

I know a lot of former MT football players that have made a pretty good life for themselves in Murfreesboro post-football. They may lose that opportunity to make connections in whichever city they end up.

I'm sure Hattiesburg includes many former USM athletes doing well. I bet many of those played at least 4 years for the Golden Eagles.

Hits keep coming, more players in portal for WKU, have to be in top 10 in the country. Even local kids from BG gone. This is madness? Next might be Big REd...

That's a very good observation, and one that I have not seen mentioned or considered anywhere else. I suppose that it is different for every student-athlete. Some will make connections wherever they go and no matter how long they are there, while others will struggle with that no matter how long they are in one place. But, it could certainly have an effect on the number of players staying in a college town/area post graduation.

I’d make it clear that once you enter the portal you are gone. I think that’s UAB’s stance, although Shropshire was an exception for whatever reason. If you don’t want to be there, that’s fine, but we are moving on. That’s the best stance I think schools at our level can take.

If we did that in hoops we would be without Sharp and Hamilton. I don't mind guys testing the waters. Coaches talk to other programs to get raises and extensions. Players are using the portal and NIL to do the same. Hard to blame them.

That definitely sounds like the head ball coach is shopping himself and the players know it.

It is a two-way street. We will lose to the portal, and we will gain from the portal Over 1000 kids in the portal, over 65 QBs. We will pick up some good talent, too. It sucks, I don't like it one bit. But we'll survive.

I had a guy text me that Helton was considering leaving WKU for a P5 offensive coordinator role.

I could honestly see it. He knows we won't tolerate losing. Get a pay increase, leave as a winner, in a couple seasons move on to another head coaching gig with a fresh set of growing pain years.

A P5 is not going to put up with his boring offense that he doesn't seem to know what his system is. He was getting canned at Tenn because he called the same 4 or 5 boring plays over and over and over.....

Todd hired him as a reaction for the awful hire of Boy Idiot. Before Kittley he ran that same boring low scoring offense at Western. Without Kittley the offense was all over the place this season. And vs teams with a pulse Western failed to score 30 ppg in all.

While I would like to see a new coach at Western....I dont think Todd has it in him to hire or to know what a championship coach is.

Do you think bringing back Kittley, this time as the head coach would be a good idea if Helton does leave?

Absolutely. The offense under Kittley was night and day better than when Helton has had the reigns. Only Kittley was allowed to call the shots.

Yes. He will have growing pains as a "head coach" but he knows the system he wants to run and knows the type of QB, WR and the OL it takes to run it.

4 years in Helton still can't define what system on offense he wants to run. Not only that his decisions on when to and not to, take chances, are mostly wrong. That alone cost Western 2 games this season and possibly a shot at another CUSA Championship.
