Technically, the rule doesn't say "second year". It says "final year".

If JMU were to immediately submit a waiver to shorten our reclassification to one year, then 2022 would become our final year of reclassification. Our AD has always been clear in public statements that we intend to request a waiver to shorten our transition. Now seems like a good time.

My impression was always that he was considering the waiver for the second year and that there was little to no chance of a waiver for this year. Sure as hell hope I'm wrong about that. The JMU team has earned the right to go bowling!

I'm not sure the exact reasons for the timing and everything, but all year it's sounded like JMU has a very specific plan and timeline for the waiver to make 2022 year 2. Sometime in December is what's always been mentioned.

I don't know what exactly the reasoning is for that timing but I'm sure there's some reason. It seems like it would've made sense to do it like a month ago and then maybe we could be considered in our final year right now and likely going bowling... But maybe I'm wrong and they feel approval is more likely after the season. It's definitely more important to be sure about next year than it is to get a bowl this year.

Disclosure before I post….its been a long time since this happened, so I have no idea if the process is still the same, but Central Arkansas tried the waiver thing the year after they joined the Southland conference from D2….The waiver had to first be approved to be considered, and then there was a committee that later decided on the matter. That being said, there is little hope that the process could happen on a fast enough timeline where JMU gets a bowl invite.

If they want to make money USA or USM should go to that Lending Tree Bowl. Marshall would bring 2 fans.

Marshall has more history playing MAC teams so that may be why they may want them. Viewership numbers I'm sure is a huge consideration. I think we go to Mobile though. Being so close has to make us a top pick.

After two stints in the MAC already, asking Herd fans to drop a grand on travel and lodging to Mobile just before Christmas to watch Marshall play a peer is going to be a hard sell.

Marshall fans will travel wherever the Herd ends up but to what degree will depend on the opponent.

Who's "they"?

Let's be honest here, bowl committees can only lobby and make recommendations but ultimately the TV Execs make the final decision and they could care less about how much money the gate makes/attendance or how much money is spent in the community or hotels etc...the only thing the TV execs care about is what will attract the most eyeballs on TV - that’s really what determines bowl matchups. TV trumps all. The Indy Bowl can vouch all day long for Louisiana or the Mobile Bowl can vouch all day long for Southern Miss but if the TV Execs crunch the #'s and estimate that team A vs team B will attract more viewers, then that's who they're going to pick. Also, conference bowl tie-ins aren't set in stone especially when you consider ESPN owns nearly all of them and as seen in past years, they can shuffle tie-ins as they please.

That being said, there is little hope that the process could happen on a fast enough timeline where JMU gets a bowl invite.

I'm also going from memory, without insider info, and not double checking exact specifics that were publicly reported because it doesn't matter....

Since before we were even officially SBC back in June, JMU has planned to file a waiver to make 2022 to count as our final transition year. This is why we pushed so hard to get the 5 home FBS games this year, it checks the boxes for a successful waiver (and helping us stand apart from SHSU and JSU). The NCAA Transformation Committee (or some random committee) came out to JMU in early/mid Nov and I believe are finalizing a report early December regarding our transition. The JMU AD wanted this report to strengthen the waiver. The generally conservative and tight lipped JMU AD has publicly said that he fully expects the waiver to be granted.

After starting 5-0, JMU looked into what would need to be done to go to NY6 bowl if they stayed undefeated. There was support from SBC office to help make this happen if the undefeated season came true. Perhaps things could have been set in motion in late October to have everything in place so that report was delivered this week and prior to official bowl selections. Pressure from JMU, SBC and ESPN hopefully means NCAA exepediates a review and the waiver is granted and JMU gets selected for NY6. NCAA doesn't do anything fast so I have my doubts it would have been possible even with all the pressure, but who knows. JMU AD basically said it was NY6 or bust when the headlines starting building mid Oct. Then Ga Southern ruined all that fun. With that said, others with insider intel could probably distinguish if what the JMU AD said regarding NY6 or bust was totally truthful or if we kept the pedal down to get a waiver prior to bowl selections.

The whole reason for the waiver, from the very beginning, was to make JMU full FBS next year so we don't get slotted between 6 win teams and 5-7 win teams (like SHSU and JSU will be).

Troy's AD said this morning that the Cure Bowl is likely for Troy if we win Saturday, and that there's also a chance that ESPN could slot us to a bigger non-SBC bowl.

There is definitely jockeying/negotiating going on behind the scenes on who plays in what bowl. USA or USM would spend more money in the city of Mobile as well. All this is factored in when different groups are negotiating.

So, refresh my (old and tired) memory: how are the bowls announced? As they are assigned or all at once, more or less?

Jags playing in Mobile doesn’t really make sense.

My guess is NO Bowl as well.
