Cherry Crusade

The Cherry Crusade is Temple University's student supporters section for Temple Athletics. The Cherry Crusade is notorious for their

Thanks for the information; that is good to hear.

Someone mentioned Screechers early on. Bleacher Screechers kind of has a nice ring to it. Though I'm not sure if our breed of owl is a screecher, a hooter, or a switch hitter.

This seems like as good a place as any to ask this - did the Autry Army wither away?

A current undergrad was asking, yesterday.

BTW, he expects a sizable student turnout for volleyball vs Baylor next Wednesday.
It's the first day back after fall break.

The same undergrad had never heard of "Midnight Madness".
Has the celebratory first practice session for basketball vanished too?

At some point they continued with Autry Army at Tudor. But can’t recall seeing it the past few years.

Midnight madness was not present when I was there 06-10. Didn’t athletics try to do something last year?

It's certainly got more tradition associated with it than the made-up canard of not graduating if you pass through the Sallyport after matriculation and before graduation day.

That tradition is older than the current students. How long does it have to be done before it's accepted as a tradition? Any student from the last decade or two would recognize that tradition more than the Blue Curtain

Damn, that is annoying! I don't know where it came from, or how it managed to take hold so strongly. It just sort of sprang up overnight and now we can't get rid of it. Yesterday I overheard a tour guide telling a group of high school students about it, perpetuating the myth.

In my day (late '90s) the tradition was merely 'bad luck' for passing through as an undergrad. Didn't stop people from using the Sallyport as a beer golf hole - though some people did respect the tradition and walked around Lovett Hall after making their shot through.

I found that the anticipation of going through that sallyport was great fun and it was something to look forward to. Don't know a single person who went though it as an undergrad while I was there (2010s). The tradition is older than the current students, the students like it, it's had greater longevity than 90% of the traditions people in the Parliament bring up, and it's a fun tradition to talk about when non Rice people visit the campus.
Besides, no matter where you're going on campus you'd have to go out of your way to go through it. And it's not like anyone actually believes they wouldn't graduate for going through it, it's just a cute reason for having the tradition.

I must have gone halfway through it dozens of times, as the Dean's office entrance was on it.

As an undergrad in the 1960s, I had a class in Lovett Hall, and the best way to access the classroom was to go part way through the Sallyport. It may be age, but I don't remember any negative about going through it, and I'm sure I did a time or two.

From the direction of any residential college or any parking lot it would be quicker to get to any of the Lovett offices by going around and taking one of the diagonal pathways. And as far as going halfway through it, students stand under the arc all the time. It's going completely through it that the students won't do. But there's not often a lot of reason to stand under the arc.

Definitely not age haha. It was a tradition that started in the late 90s I believe. And it's now one of, if not the most recognized tradition at Rice. It's the go-to tradition mentioned in news articles about Rice and tours. Just about every Rice student recognizes it (likely because there isn't much of a reason to pass through there anyway nowadays). It's become a special ceremony for students to pass through the Sallyport after graduating symbolize the end of their undergrad journey just like walking in at matriculation symbolizes the beginning. But I've found that a lot of alumni have a lot of disdain for this specific tradition which I don't quite understand.
