Wow. It is really noticeable this season. Even the cream puffs keep it close. College football is changed forever. Honestly, as a fan, I love it. At least when it's not happening against my teams lol. However, watching all these other games that were supposed to be blowouts becoming close games..........it awesome.....made for TV.

Same as it ever was. Not even 15 years ago App St beat Michigan. Stanford upset USC as a 41 pt Dog. Kansas St has had OU number for years.

But it's every week, now.
Yesterday was that way. There are also a lot of blowouts. I don't think this year is particularly different, even though yesterday was unusual.
The 2nd string QB or DE at an SEC school with a sophomore starting in front of him all season doesn't have to wait 3 years to play anymore. He can transfer to an M3 or g5 school and start next year. Oh, and get a couple hundred G's in NIL money while he's at it. Just the portal or just NIL would be huge, but combined they're going to cause unprecedented upheaval in CFB.

Confirmation bias.
I could go back 40 years and show every large upset or close game. I might do it later. Did you know KU has beat Texas a couple times in the past 10 years? Theyve kept it close many other times. UTEP beat BYU in 1985, a year after they won the MNC. In 1997 UTEP beat BYU as 19 pt underdogs. Theres dozens of FCS teams beating FBS teams too.

Or he could transfer to Oklahoma or LSU and win a Heisman like Mayfield, Murry or Burrow.
The Texas backup is now starting at Nebraska. The Auburn semi-starter is starting for Oregon....

The tOSU 3rd string was starting for texas, too. Good point. Why go to the g5 or m3 when you can move within the same conference?
I'm all for player empowerment, but it does seem like we need a governing body to establish some common sense rules for both transfers and NIL.

They're working on narrowing calendar windows for transfers. That is more fair to everyone. Athletes have a better idea and schools better know where they have holes. But I don't think they should limit transfers. Athletes should as much as possible be treated like other students who are free to transfer at any time.

You made my point for me. You mention a handful of games no one playing today remembers and then mention how, recently, two historically terrible programs are able to consistently handle two heavyweights.
Nobody is afraid of the SEC or any other P5 school. They don't have to "overcome" or pull and upset like before. They are just as good or better.

I actually disagree on limiting transfers. If kids can make 6 or 7 figure salaries that's a clear admission that this is no longer amateur. Have them sign contracts though when they commit: 1 yr, 5 yr, whatever, and obviously your NIL deal could be influenced greatly by your commitment, but once you sign that letter then the team has some certainty. Perhaps include a 1 time free transfer if head coach leaves.

The SEC's all time nonconference record against FBS opponents is 1784-840-61, at least it was as of 2016:
I think we're something like 33-5 this year nonconference.
g5 teams have had some huge upsets this year (including against my Aggies), but those upsets are newsworthy by their very nature because they're so uncommon. I do think that NIL and transfer portal will help to spread out talent much more in the future, but so far that doesn't seem to be having a huge impact on the field, at least for less-traditional powers. The biggest difference I'm seeing right now is that new coaches like Lincoln Riley can go in and bring in 50 transfer in year 1 and not have to spend half a decade rebuilding a program. Ie: whomever Nebraska and Auburn hire isn't going to get 3-4 years to figure things out, he needs to hit the ground running on day 1.
I'm still uncertain about how this will ultimately play out. I'm thinking that the big programs will continue to get the 4 and 5 stars, the P5 most of the 3s, the G5 some of the 3s and most of the 1 and 2 stars and the FCS the 2, 1 and no stars. But then the portal is going to move players in both directions. For every 2nd string QB that transfers from USC to Southern Mississippi there will be a lineman from Campbell going to NC State. Just examples, substitute any school or position. FCS overachievers move up, FBS 5,4, 3 stars languishing on the bench move over or move down. The grass is always greener somewhere else. I tend to think this will hurt the FCS and G5 more than help them. Their benches would be thinner to start with, and as soon as they develop talent and they show it in games several of them leave. So making or maintaining winning teams would seem to be harder to do, swings up and down more the norm. 10-2 one season followed by 5-7 the next. But the P5, especially the P2 wouldn't be replacing starters nearly as much, just have a thinner bench than they use to. Time will tell.

Wait until a school pays the player of another school to have them transfer in-season. This may happen as the playoff expands.

There was a player somewhere who entered the portal this season, and that was given as the reason he wasn't on the field for his (former) team, and it was noted if that since he hadn't played four games, this could count as a red-shirt season.
