...maybe a DeSoto discovery? Not that it wasn't already there and known by others... Ok...Wiki doesn't say much about it, but somewhere else noted that it's called that because "The plant reminded the French settlers of the beards of the Spanish conquistadors"...so close enough, I reckon...

It also stated in Wiki that Spanish Moss can exist up into Virginia, so be on the lookout for it in NC, clt!
