Team up with Daktronics to make the entire upper east one enormous display that includes solar power. Intersperse the LEDs with solar cells. Those hi-def displays are surprisingly lo-def when you get up close.

Or, for a low-energy electro-mechanical system, use Staver-designed magnetic flip digits. The entire upper east could do "the wave", and things like that.

While we're at it, remember that putting the TV cameras on the east side will require pulling up and reversing the "R" logo on the 50 yard line, as well as the "your conference here" logos.

Any pics of anything signifiant yet?

Nope. I think they're waiting until after commencement.
If it wasn't so hard to post images here, I'd show you what the commencement setup looks like (to date).

I'm jealous of anyone here who got to watch football games in Rice Stadium before the Oilers came to town and before UH established itself on the D1 level. That must have really been something with all those fans in attendance.

Growing up, the only time I got to witness crowded home games was when A&M and Texas came to town. I miss those games. I miss all the night games. Rice Stadium is an incredible environment at night, with the medical center and downtown in lights, and the south breeze. More fans attended at night as well. Damn I miss those days

We need reconnaissance. You've got to find a way into that stadium.

Talk about!!

My first memory is from my freshman year (1966) when dozens of Winnebagos started parking in the stadium lot on the Wednesday afternoon before our first game ... vs. LSU. Those folks know how to party!!! And were so generous with their libations! :-)

And the Owls beat 'em that Saturday night, too -- 17-15 -- in a thrilling contest!

LSU in '66 was my first Rice game as well. The crowd that night was 65,000. For Texas, either that season or the next, the crowd was 70,000+. I wonder how many cumulative seasons it would take us these days to approach those numbers.

When I started in the1960s, the big crowds were TexasU and LSU. And we beat TexasU in Austin one year and LSU the next.

The Aggies weren't very good then, and didn't really draw until they got to be good under Emory Bellard in the 1970s. And we played the Ags at HRS every year in those days, to placate the Aggie Houston alumni, because Kyle Field was a lot smaller and College Station was a real *itch to get to from anywhere.

RE: HRS / EZF Athletics Construction Thread
The first Rice game that I remember attending was the LSU game in 1984. As my father and I walked to the stadium, an LSU fan asked where he could find the nearest liquor store. My dad pointed him in the direction of Rice Village. He laughed, and commented to me about how hard the LSU fans party, and take football so seriously.
The stadium was bright gold. The entire east side, and most of the end zones were full. I'll never forget it. I'd do anything to go back in time to watch a Rice game with my father. He has been gone ten years. He's the one that got me hooked on Rice. He loved pulling for underdogs. So do I.

We started alternate years in College Station in 1974, the year after the infamous MOB show at HRS.

The ten year contract for A&M to play all the games in HRS ended in 1968.My parents took me to all the HRS games in the 1960s for Rice -A&M. After I became a student in 1971 I made all the games both HRS and Kyle until the SWC ended around 1995. The only games after that scheduled were 2013 and 2014 in Kyle. I watched 2013 on television because Kyle still had the terrible seats beyond the end line in the south. I made 2014 after those seats were replaced. A&M drew in HRS but not as well as Texas and LSU.

RE: HRS / EZF Athletics Construction Thread
Rice was still the top game in town in the early 1960s. It took a while for the Oilers to get established because they were AFL and played in Jeppensen because Neely refused to rent Rice to them. The Cougars were good but were not in a conference. A lot of teams refused to play them because there was no advantage to being upset by them. It is hard to get this board to realize what a Rice game was still like in the early 1960s although the best years were from the 1930s to the 1950s.

There just isn’t much of anything to report yet.

Has anyone seen a price yet?

Brick presumably for the wall around the field.

The double doors to the left of the mound - has anyone at all been in that equipment room in the last seven years?
There are boxes labeled "2015 FBs New" and a rack covered with shiny new dark blue Schutt helmets. Can't find any info about what brand they wear now.

That was after A&M put a second deck on Kyle in 1966.

Dashed hopes?

Southeast - fresh paint, which may have been done only for commencement, but it may be all of the upgrade we'll see, this time.
