Bill Maher Mocks Twitter for Its Meltdown Over Elon: 'You Failed'
Quote:If there’s anyone who would understand the evolution that Elon Musk has had in his political thought, it would be Bill Maher, who seems to have had a similar political evolution. They considered themselves liberal until the Democratic Party ran screaming so far to the left that it made people like Maher and Musk wonder how crazy they have become. Then they found themselves in the center and on some issues, even to the right of center because they still have some sanity. Musk broke it down in a cute graph the other day.

On his show Friday, Maher had a little fun, joking about Musk’s Twitter deal.

Then he laid out why he thought it was a great thing that Musk was taking over Twitter — because Twitter had failed.

From Fox News:

“Has Twitter failed in setting itself up in the past as the judge of what can go out there? And I would say yes, you have,” Maher said during a panel discussion Friday night.

“You failed when you threw the New York Post off of Twitter for talking about Hunter Biden’s emails. And it turned out that was a real story. You failed when you said we couldn’t read about whether COVID had come from a lab. You failed!”

He pointed out how even now, as Musk is about to take over, they’re still trying to stomp on content, with how they labeled a Babylon Bee satire video about the Twitter employee reaction to the Elon deal “sensitive content.” He pointed out how funny it was that Twitter went after a parody video about them being too sensitive — and proved their point.

“‘Sensitive content,’ Twitter said. In the video, they were making fun of Twitter for being too sensitive. This is so ‘Through the Looking Glass’!” Maher exclaimed. “This is well within what satire has always been. And the fact that they flagged this for being insensitive shows their complete lack of self-awareness about what their own problem is. If that’s where the line is, you have failed Twitter. You do need a new sheriff.”

Maher — like Musk — believes in the value of hearing thoughts other than your own. “Twitter could be a place where you might see an opinion that you didn’t formally consider, and we need that desperately in America.” Instead, he said, it’s become a left-wing echo chamber instead of the “town square” for the free flow of ideas.

Part of the problem is that Gen-Z folks seem to think that if something makes them uncomfortable, it shouldn’t be allowed.

“I’d much rather have Elon Musk making the rules than a 23-year-old who can’t take the joke on Babylon Beeswax, or whatever the f— that is. I mean, this is a generation that doesn’t know what the word ‘violence’ means. They think ‘violence’ means ‘anything I don’t like.’ Their standard of free speech is ‘I’m uncomfortable.’ That’s not where the standard is, right?”

Maher blasted the education system for failing to teach “civics” to young people.

“Civics doesn’t exist anymore. They don’t know … ‘Free speech? What the f— does that mean? It hurt my feelings.’ That’s what matters to them.

We’ve come a long way from Skokie when everyone — left, right and center — seemed to understand that you defended the right to free speech, even if you disagreed or thought that speech was hateful — that the answer to hateful speech was more speech against it.

Maher said because Twitter has become essentially the public square, cutting someone off from Twitter is basically “saying you don’t have free speech rights.”

New York Times writer David Leonhardt tried to argue that you then might get people saying “lies about election fraud.” As though the liberal media didn’t push lies about Russia collusion for years, but they have no self-awareness about that. Maher rebuffed that, saying you can’t cut off speech.

“I understand that, but Twitter also said you couldn’t — they banned you talking about whether coronavirus came from a lab — and it may well have. And even the Biden administration admits that now,” Maher pushed back. “We don’t know where coronavirus came from, but there’s no reason to think it couldn’t have emerged from a lab. They have a lab in Wuhan that was studying coronavirus! And you couldn’t even discuss this! I mean, that’s outrageous!”

“I think that’s what Elon Musk wants to fix at Twitter,” Maher said. “I think so.”

That’s the point. It’s about having that vibrant arena in which free thought can flourish. That’s why the left is scared — because that would finish them.

While I don’t agree with many of Bill Maher’s political positions, I do give him credit for being far less hypocritical than the typical democrat. He’s one of the few libs willing to say the Leftist Kings are not wearing clothes when they parade around naked of any consistent logic.

Kind of ironic that he says these things about the kind of democrat party he helped to build.

Why? The notion that someone cannot grow ideologically, even well into adulthood, strikes me as a a form of mental constipation. How many on this site think exactly the same way that they did at 20? At 30? At 40? I am now 62. If I am fortunate enough to still be alive at 72 will hope that I’ve grown even further in my opinions.

That Bill Maher has said some offensively stupid things previously does not mean that he is irredeemable. That you and I, MHB, disagree on some things does not mean that we disagree on all things. I’ve had my mind changed many times, including by those who I vehemently argued with on this forum. If you have not, I will feel a bit sad for you. What a boring life to be forever stuck on the ideological spectrum.

Agreed. He seems like a weirdo to me, but he can control himself in a debate and has independent thought that doesn’t always align with the demons and will let them know it. He’s forsure a liberal but that in itself doesn’t bother me as long as you can explain to me why which he can even though I’d disagree with him on much.

I’ve never watched a full him (Democrat ) and Shapiro (Rino Republican) sit down but they actually tend to agree on much of what’s wrong today.

I agree with most all you said there. I have evolved some in my positions over the years. What is strange about Bill is that he is still batsh!t nuts on some liberal issues, yet sounds sane occasionally.

I think that there is an awakening happening in this country - - one that is long overdue.

I also think that Maher, as wretched and offensive as he has been in the past, will prove more effective than most at bringing about this awakening.

Your post reminded me of an Ali quote from 1975

“The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.”

We should always continue to challenge our beliefs. The only belief that should remain steadfast in a man’s life is his spiritual beliefs as they should be the foundation for everything else.

Well said, true intellectual growth can only occur by challenging ones view of the world and by trying to develop an understanding of an opposing views perspective.

What surprised me was when he said that Elon had bought Twitter and people in the audience applauded. I thought all of his audience were Trump hating, common sense hating Liberals. Maybe some of you are right that there is a big shift coming, maybe they were Liberals who are finally seeing some light.

It is a little ironic but rational people are willing to challenge themselves and their own take on things. I haven't ever watched a full Bill Maher show but I remember seeing clips that made me sure I never would. And then this shiteshow of an admin turned up and I started seeing clips that actually made sense. I still doubt I'll ever stop on his show when I'm channel surfing but he does seem to have evolved somewhat.

Time happens and things evolve, opinions and thoughts evolve. I built my house in 2005 and absolutely loved maintaining the 3/4 acre lot. 17 years later I hate it. I still don't trust anyone else to do it to my satisfaction but I am evolving into that person who will eventually, out of necessity, start paying someone else to do it. I suspect Maher's opinions, out of necessity and to avoid looking like a complete loon, have evolved.

I do agree though that he did indeed help build the present day democrat party but I think he regrets some or all of it now.

Leaders are held to a higher standard that others (or at least they used to be).

For example, a church member might be guilty of adultery but if the pastor of the church commits adultery he is gone.

Maher's self-chosen role throughout his career has been to build up the left while diminishing the right.

What we see today he played a part in creating.

Where Maher failed was not being aware of his stupidity at the time. Sure, it's great he has come to realize how stupid he was -- although I don't think that's the way he's viewing it -- but he doesn't get a pass for bringing about the insanity we have today.

Maher should've considered Chesterton's Fence long ago before spewing out his beliefs.

100% agree. I can honestly say I don’t really care for the guy but unlike other brainwashed Dems he can actually think for himself. That in itself is astounding that he doesn’t regurgitate talking points but sees the hypocrisy that flows from such ignorance and arrogance. The polar opposite is Stephen Gooberhair who is nothing more than a sounding board. Buys into everything Regressive tenet and spews the nonsense as factual. He’s a fool’s fool. Lackey 101 Useful Idiot

But there is still hope as those who worked the fields in the final hours were compensated the same as those who had been in the fields all day.

There an old saying I grew up with maybe just East Texas idk but it goes like this. Not everyone who gets you out of trouble is your friend and not everyone who craps on you is your enemy. Take it for what it’s worth.

I have found this to be true many times in life.

I’ll give another one more common but it goes along with always learning something NEW. One day I was talking to my now deceased father in law and explaining some business venture where the guys MADE A RAT KILLING. I don’t remember what it was now. But, he was older born in the Great Depression and had my wife his daughter late in life and he responded by saying yeah I remember those days. I responded with what? He said he remembered those RAT KILLING days. He explained saying he grew up in a frame house off the ground NO A/C in Texas in those days must’ve been brutal. He said when the rats and mice got so bad you would take old clothes and rags and close up any and all holes in the house. Next you would set off cyanide in your house and leave for 3-4 days. When you got back you were left to pick up dozens of dead Rats. Thus the term RAT KILLING became popular. I had no idea where it came from but have heard it my whole life.

I do think Maher over does it on his religious jokes. But he's been consistent in the 30 ish years I've seen his shows. It's the democrats that have left him. He is a man who no longer has a party. There is too much money involved but I wonder if a centerist party could every actually capture the people the primaries leave behind.
