Iona is locked out of the NCAAs: Could they get last New Big East Pro-rata spot?
Rick Pitino was a major figure in the OBE. Could Pitino get his Gaels into the NBE?

Iona has a perfect geographical fit to send fans to the NBE tournament; and they are a perfect institutional fit for the schools that make up that conference.

When the NBE brokered their 12-year deal with FS1, the NBE Charter Members (Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St Johns, Villanova, Xavier) had it written into their deal that they could add 2 NBE Expansion Members (Connecticut & ????) at an equal revenue share (roughly 4 million per yr) to the Charter Members.

With the 12-year NBE Contract coming up in a few years, Val Ackerman made it known that they would look at expansion (which is smart to maximize the league's founding contract document).

Iona's name wasn't mentioned as prominently as Dayton, VCU, St Louis, which is surprising given their proximity and institutional similarity (among other things). It seems like a win-win for both sides with FS1 picking up the cheque.

I have to think Rick Pitino is using his connections to explore it, at least.

Imagine if someone were to show the CSNbbs Realignment forum on a projector screen at an NCAA athletic directors convention.

Why wouldn't you take Dayton instead?

Within two threads on this home page, the next Big East member is speculated to be:

1. Notre Dame
2. Iona

What a world.

Iona's "arena" seats about 2,600. That truly is perfect for the Big East (sarcasm intended).

TroyTBoy is here to amuse, baffle, troll and irk us. It would be beautiful if we somehow learned he is a famous (and cheesy) bro country musician — or a male exotic dancer.

Are we sure they wouldn’t prefer the America East?

I'm still trying to figure out in what way Iona, besides being a Catholic school, is a good institutional fit for the Big East.

Adding a school with a tiny arena and significantly less prestige than two other current conference members that are located in the same media market would be asinine. That said, in light of the Gaels’ upset loss I hope the NCAA lets Bellarmine into the NIT and has them host Iona at the KFC Yum Center purely for the sickos factor of it all.

.

Iona (4 seed), Xavier (1 seed), and WTFU (3 seed) are listed at The Barking Crow - one of the leading NIT bracketologies. Surprisingly, so is Notre Dame (1 seed, but a NCAA 11 seed at bracketmatrix.com). Rutgers (12 seed at bracketmatrix.com) is also listed as a probable NIT 1 seed.

They're predicting that VCU and SMU will make their way into the NCAA tournament.

Just because you have an idea doesn't mean it's a good idea. Maybe think a little on it before posting your thread.

I'd have to assume Iona's about to be sanctioned.

I can think of 20 or so schools off the top of my head I’d prefer to Iona based upon markets/location, academics, and future potential if the individual schools were willing to commit to improving basketball.

Iona does not compare favorably on many metrics to the BE 4.0 or whatever iteration we’re on at this point. Outside SJU, every BE school is either top 150 in USNWR national rankings or top 5 in the regional rankings. Iona is 55th in the north regional rankings.

Iona would be better fit for A-10 if A-10 lost a member. St Louis would be the best option since Creighton, Depaul, Marquette, Xavier and Butler are in the region. That would set up an east and west division for schedules.

That's about the size of St Johns, Georgetowns, etc, when they don't rent out the cities NBA joint (which doesn't really count for a home arena).

I don't find the "P6" offensive.

When you're winning NY6s, making CFPs and Final Fours I don't think its bad to tout you're a top 6 league.

The Old Big East (the lineal AAC) was part of the "Big 6" and there is value in establishing that the order hasn't changed.
