WM was his first choice according to his coach so I guess the HC vacancy isn’t a deterrent when you have your heart set on a school. Even though he goes to HS in Salinas, CA he plays sometimes for Virginia Venom which is coached by Walsingham Academy HC Ian Heisel. In April PBR California ranked him as the 8th best catcher in CA. The guy in the thread condemning W&M—and Mann, specifically—has a point but he clearly has an agenda. I don’t like our hard 3.5gpa threshold with anything lower requiring a panel hearing. I’d like to see the research showing a kid with a 3.2gpa is convincingly less likely to be successful at W&M. A LOT of factors play into success and some dings may be mitigated by time and/or circumstances.

I think any kid who has a 3.0 or better in high school is worth the chance. Given the resources and support that are available, a B student in HS should be able to achieve close to that in college, even at W&M. Trust me, I took a lot of classes that made my GPA look a lot better than what I really achieved.

And, a 3.0 at a challenging school is probably more difficult than a 3.5 at many schools. Factor in time commitment playing a varsity sport or two or three, academic clubs and possibly even working part time to help a single parent. BTW, I’d make the same argument for an exceptional artist, musician, or mathematician. W&M needs to do better…All In is more than a fundraising slogan.

I was not aware W&M had a hard threshold for GPA. That's extraordinarily dumb. You have to be able to evaluate candidates holistically.

In this case though it sounds like Fontaine had a high enough GPA? I've never seen something like this with a prospective recruit.
