Not sure how many people still live in the basin, but it has a really fascinating history. For those interested these articles give a good summary of it’s story:
The Basin Story
The River
The story of the I-10 bridge over the basin is pretty interesting too. It is the 3rd longest bridge in the US and the 2nd longest on the interstate system. It’s also proven to be very dangerous, but they’ve recently taken a lot of steps to fix that. Locally, we refer to it as ‘crossing the Basin,’ or more often, ‘stuck for hours on the Basin.’
Basin Bridge
In 1999 the Louisiana IceGator booster club was coming back from a game in Pensacola FL, which I was a part of. There was probably the most horrific wreck I think Ive ever seen on the other side of the bridge. The only thing that may rival that is I was at LFT for an air show in 1996 where a Baton Rouge pilot lost his life during the show.
Also the bridge is 20.6 miles long.
Hello ECHL old head! I remember this bridge from a trip to see my Hampton Roads Admirals play in Lafayette. The Cajundome was interesting, I still don't understand the fascination with frozen Dr. Pepper. The trip up was bad enough since I could see the water, the trip back to New Orleans was worse since I could not see anything.

The Ice Gators were fun. I only saw them in the Dome once, but kept up with them. They were outdrawing some N.B.A. teams for a while there.
It may be an urban legend, but my dad often told the story of a newbie trucker who, after driving several miles along the bridge assumed he had to be back on firn ground, pulled over to take a whiz, and found out the hard way he was not.

Never heard that, lol, but it’s a good one.
It can easily seem endless, especially for those not expecting it.
But it is actually quite a nice drive during the day. You are driving through a landscape of a primeval forest, and the views can be quite beautiful.

Well I was trying not to be too gruesome, but yeah, there has been some truly horrific crashes on that bridge. Here is a good article on the last one (that I know of) in 2019.
https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/...1151a.html
Folks I commuted daily from Lafayette to Refineryville for four years and have many miles on that span. The best parts where in the evenings when the sun was setting on the basin. A great sight I remember 25 years on. The worst were the crashes. Some were minor hold ups and others we spent hours waiting for traffic to clear.
I still drive it a couple of times a year when I visit my family and what I miss the most is the old Mid-Way Grocery. Every Friday afternoon the carpool would stop at Mid-Way, get boudin balls, a six-pack, and a paper so we could place our bets on college football for the weekend. No, the driver was not drinking, betting yes, and we had hell to pay if we got stuck on the bridge after a few beers. It's really not becoming to be dressed in a suit and tie and dangling a part of your anatomy over the side of the railing.

Obviously I can see the argument for keeping Sun Belt too and that's where my vote would be. But I can definitely see why a rebranding would be considered.

When Metallica were writing their much-maligned 2003 album “St Anger” creative juggernaut Lars Ulrich argued the album shouldn’t feature guitar solos because they’d make the music sound “dated” to the 1980s. Kirk, the guitar player replied that if it didn’t have any guitar solos the music will sound absolutely dated to right then. Kirk was right. That album blows.
Point: we don’t need to get cute here with division names…we’ll just end up changing it to East-West just like the Big 10 did and the ACC should do (N/S in their case).
The fact that you know Metallica history makes you my friend...
I felt a tingle myself.
The thing about a Metallica album blowing is that it's still better than much of whatever else is out there at the time. But the "black" album was the last real Metallica album. I bought both the Load CDs and they were ok, but that's the last thing I purchased from them. I do like the covers on the 2nd Garage Days Album. I still listen to them on Apple, though, when I'm in the mood. I like to throw on an essentials mix, shuffle it and play Diablo for a few hours. Nothing like killing endlessly with with Metallica pumping through the headset!
I think the commercial success of the black album brought so many fans into the fold that the die-hard fans looked around and said wtf? They didn't belong exclusively to the kids that were a bit outside the norm anymore. Now they were everybody's. So many times I heard "Enter Sandman is the greatest Metallica song ever." Made me want to puke even though it's a great song. It was just the first one with a video, where those types got introduced to them. I remember when it debuted on the Headbanger's Ball. Arguably, Master of Puppets is their best song and album. It was the swan song of their first few efforts, which were already amazing in their own right. But my favorite song just for getting stirred up is probably Dyer's Eve.

2008’s “Death Magnetic” was produced by Rick Rubin. It was a decent return to their thrash roots. The follow up “Hardwired to Self Destruct” to me is the best album they’ve written since “…And Justice For All”. It’s that good.

Learned the next morning their was 5 cars involved and 8 dead in that accident. Also learned that we probably came through about 5 mins after the accident happened. As there was still no one at the site yet.
What year was that? Also, you lived in LFT, now live in SC, but are a Herd fan? Dude, that covers some ground, lol.
No No
*Born in Southern West Virginia, lived there the 1st 23 years of my life
*Moved to Lafayette, well Broussard, just right passed the Middle School on Hulin Rd., Lived there from June 1995 to July 2006.
*Moved back to West Virginia, closer to Charleston about 25 miles from where I grew up
Been dressed in Green and White since I was 3. I have an aunt that was at Marshall when flight 932 crashed.
That accident Im pretty sure was 1999 but it could have been 98, it's been over 2 decades ago.

Seriously if you are a TV exe how many games would you want to watch or put on your network.
This could potentially be a line up one week:
UTEP
FIU
Liberty
Sam Houston State
Jacksonville State
LA Tech
MTSU
New Mexico State
WKU
Aubrun
This is an actual OOC game for WKU next year.
In what reality would anyone in charge of sports programing look at anything besides the WKU game and say "That is a game I really want to air".
I don't see ESPN wanting CUSA back anymore and I don't see CBSSports giving them anything close to what they have right now. They might be lucky to get 100K per year and their games scaled back 1/3, which means more games to Facebook or Stadium (Regional Only).
Do they even have any rivalries outside of NMSU and UTEP with their lineup?

Besides New Mexico State/UTEP and WKU/MTSU, I don't see any. And it takes more than just playing someone to become a rival. The media tried to push WKU as a rival for Marshall and evn though there were some decent games in a lot of sports I, nor a lot of other Marshall fans never seen them more than just another game on the schedule

MTSU vs WKU is a big rivalry. Beyond that I would say JSU and MTSU have a good amount of history and should heat up pretty quickly. MTSU side might take a little longer since we are 18-2-2 all time against them.

That's because we've had 15 years with no heated rivalry in CUSA and tons of Marshall fans are younger and have never witnessed the old rivalries like Ohio (60 games), App State (24 games). These were heated rivalries. WKU (8 games in conference) was not a rival. We played SoMiss (14 games) more times than we played WKU LOL. Our rivals have always been Ohio, App State and ECU. WKU was just another team to me.

Hating them and being a rival are two different things. I despise everything about Kent State and Akron but they were never rivals. Im a Steelers fan and I root for Miami to go 0-17 year year just because I can't stand them not because they aren't Cleveland, Cincy or Baltimore.

For me my introduction to Metallica was the Black Album. So that is always going to be go to, favorite, etc.
I liked Load and Re-Load. I can remember listening to both while riding a bus to play football. Depending on the mood, one of those was on. Fuel was always the song I would listen to in the locker room prepping my mind for a game. Garage Days with the covers was good, not one I'd grab for, but Turn the Page was good in it's right. As was Die Die My Darling. Metallica S&M found a rotation for me as well. I don't remember why I gravitated towards it, but I did.
As I got older I started going back and listening to the older Metallica. I love Kill'em All.
I was in college when St. Anger came out. I was not really impressed. One or two songs were ok, but they seemed to want to smash two songs into one on several tracks.
I rarely dab in their new stuff since then.

I think the really high point you are referring to is further west on I-10 in Lake Charles. To this day I still give the steering wheel the 10-2 death grip when going over that bridge.

That maybe it.
I remember driving to Galveston back in 2006. I just had bought a 3/4 ton diesel truck and took it over to some docks to move a vehicle for my dad who was offshore working. And going over that bridge in that beast was a blast. The passengers in my truck didn't care for it,
ETA.. Googled, saw photos, and yep that's it.

I hate that bridge! It is one of the most structurally unsound bridges in North America!

And how! Imagine how scary it is under normal condition….I had to cross it in a big ice storm we had several years ago. One of the scariest moments in my life. I really really wanted to get home. Took me almost 12 hours to get from Houston to Lafayette….normally takes ~4.
