This is going to be a national story & a black eye for the university. Penny needs to step up & issue a sincere public apology. Tough questions are part of this job, but they are offset by the tremendous joy the team brings to this community when “they’re on”. Unfortunately for him, high profile coaches in high profile jobs cannot cherry pick.

Sorry, but Geoff was doing his job. He is a columnist, not a fan. The program has underachieved in all 4 years of Penny’s tenure. It’s not wrong of a columnist to ask a coach, whose program is yet again in the familiar position of having to win the conference tournament to reach the NCAA’s, if 9-8 with bad losses to Murray State, UGA, Ole Miss, Tulane, ECU & SMU is embarrassing & if he still thinks he can turn it around. This is not a 1-off year… it’s Penny’s program. We all hope he can turn it around, but blaming the messenger & ignoring the problem will not fix the problem.

In general, probably not. Using it while representing the university, probably so.

Jim Strickland was elected on a pledge to lower the crime rate. That hasn’t happened.

A reporter asks him if he’s lost faith in his ability to get the job done. Strickland responds with “Stop asking me stupid ******* questions. If we were fully staffed like X city, I think we could do that. We don’t have enough officers. We’re dealing with COVID. Y’all need to act like it. Stop disrespecting me, bro. Don’t do that. I work way too ******* hard.”

Would the same people defending Penny’s response defend this?

RE: Grounds for dismissal or suspension
The double standard that sports operates within continues to baffle me. Fans buy a ticket and yell the nastiest stuff at players/coaches/refs. A player/coach/ref even acknowledges it and they are considered morally wrong - unprofessional, not focused, lacking integrity.....Media can, and are expected to, bait coaches and players at obligatory post-game press conferences. Give an honest answer with a hint of fire and the coach/player again becomes unprofessional, not focused, lacking integrity.

Stooooooopid.

For the record: I think fans should be able to holler, scream, berate players/coaches/refs. I don't like to, but do as you please. Media should be able to ask any question they please.

Penny gives honest answers, shares info. He has been candid. The media has done what media does, they use Penny's words against him. This is why Bill Bellichick handles pressers as he does. There is NOTHING to gain for a coach/player in post-game presser. NOTHING.

Eh, agreed that its not great but I don't think anybody will think less of the university because a frustrated basketball coach said a bad word. Now, they'll think less of the university because we suck. That's for sure and fair.

Oh, sure there is. Press coverage is what generates interest. Find me a program with no ink & Ill show you a program with no fans. The University of Memphis is front page news in Memphis. & there isn’t another program in our conference with that level of community interest; & “that interest” was formed by decades of being the only sports story in town. Memphis is a unique job for a G5 member school.

"Grounds for dismissal or suspension"??

Of course not. Have you ever heard a Bob Knight presser? Penny was mild compared to that.

He needed to stand up for himself, or he would've lost the team.

The content of his response was valid. Memphis has dominated in games against Alabama and Wichita State. Missing players does change the equation.

After Penny wins a couple of nattys he can act that way - maybe - times change and Knight was eventually forced out at Indiana as you may re all.

Ridiculously juvenile move if they don’t. The lack of discipline from the coach is manifesting itself on the court. We are as erratic as a Penny Hardaway press conference. No wonder this program is where it is.

If his job is to be a d##k he's good at it.

I don't read that s##t or even listen to announcers during a game. Not sure what job he has except for candyazz b###h's like you that don't know what happened in a game you just watched.
