Not if you already have a Rice degree. Those are both much more enjoyable places to be on the football team most likely.

There's no doubt. I hope none of these guys are leaving a Rice degree on the table. Rice is one of the worst places in the nation to play football right now. I don't blame them

The underclassmen who have hit the portal so far are leaving a degree on the table (Tereance Ellis, Desmyn Baker).

All the rest so far, I believe, are grad transfers. I don't really care where the grad transfers go. Hopefully they go somewhere and enjoy themselves. Especially the ones who haven't seen much playing time here.

True. But I’m pretty sure you only need 60+? hours at Rice to obtain a Rice degree as long as you graduate somewhere else within 5 years. At least that’s what someone told me a decade ago when they transferred out.

Not so sure about that. I transferred into Rice and lost about a year to 'unequivalent courses'. Most of the time your last coursework needs to be from the institution conferring the degree. The exceptions I recall was where one of my contemporaries failed a P/F course during the spring semester and another miscounted his total semester hours. He had opted for hours rather than courses and was one course short based on number of courses requirement and one hour short based on the semester hours requirement. Brutal, but rules are rules.

“Mike Bloomgren’s football team found itself challenged by injuries, particularly at quarterback, but overcame them time and again to fall two touchdowns short of a bowl berth. A milestone win in Birmingham which saw the Owls become the first C-USA team to defeat the two-time champion UAB Blazers at home since 2017 was followed by consecutive overtime losses. The hard lessons learned in those games proved valuable in the season finale as the Owls rallied from 10 points down to defeat LA Tech on Senior Day. Sixth-year senior Elijah Garcia made the most of his Super Senior year, leading the team with 67 tackles (the most by a Rice interior defender in 35 years) and earning consensus first-team All C-USA honors for his efforts.”

I remember we had a baseball player transfer to Rice for his last year, but my understanding was that his degree when completed would be from Stanford.

RE: Football offseason
There's maybe two different things going on. Anybody enrolled for at least one spring or fall semester is counted as an "alumnus/a". In addition to various other requirements, like GPA and LPAPs, you need at least 60 hours in four fall and/or spring semesters at Rice to graduate with a Rice bachelor's degree, at least 48 total hours counted at the 300 level or above, and more than half of those upper-level hours at Rice. There's not a lot of ways to imagine somebody getting 48 of 60 hours in upper-level credit at Rice, including at least 30 total hours for a single major, and then transferring out to finish the lower requirements of a bachelor's elsewhere. It's obviously much more likely to go the other way or for a student to come in with a lot AP credit and graduate early.

RE: Football offseason
I finished my Rice degree by taking one, 100 level class at a community college but I had already completed all my upper level and major requirements in seven separate semesters at Rice.

Even that I had to appeal through the registrar-was accepted because of a family health issue where I wanted to be home for a semester before my job started back in Texas in June.

Indeed. There was a lot more than 2 TDs that kept this team from getting a bowl berth starting with an offensive philosophy that the team can’t execute and coaching decisions to play not to lose which ultimately opened the door to losing at least the OT games.

He knows it's Bloomgren's fault. He's giving him every opportunity to save himself. There's no way to spin four awful seasons in a positive light.

That entire statement is meant to satisfy the Rice community, and all the Rice pacifist.

Actually, a lot of those coaching decisions to "play not to lose" are backed up by some pretty sound statistical evidence suggesting that those are the best ways to win. Some are not, of course, but some truly are doing what the empirical evidence says is the best way to win.

The "offensive philosophy that the team can't execute" part is spot on.

Going back to pound the rock in OT when throwing the ball got you to OT is not the best way to win.

The Fan Transfer portal for Rice is the best idea I've seen as a result of this coaching regime in the last 3 years.

I don’t think there’s a better program for me out there, that would be willing to take me.

I’m “sticking” with (overcooked) Rice.

I disagree. I don't know if it was because they got him too bulked up or what, but he showed absolutely no burst last year (on the rare occasions where he had a hole to run through).
