That has been my fear for a few weeks.
I just hope we aren't in an era of "the portal giveth, and the portal taketh away... "
I don't want to bait DP, but there is free agency in the NFL effecting a modest proportion of players.
But this is crazy on steroids. Hell a team could lose 5, 10, 25, 50, etc. of their players to the portal. No one other than players signing new LOI are bound to any team.
Just wait until a sophomore Heisman trophy winner from UofM decides to transfer back home to Ohio and attend OSU.
Just better hope that the game doesn't get ruined...
Four letters caused this, NCAA. A strong leader was needed to establish strict timelines and rules regarding this stuff. Instead Emmert has provided little if any direction with rather opaque rules and uneven enforcement of what is on the books. This transfer situation is chaotic, but Notre Dame lost a coach this season while still legitimately in the CFP playoff hunt, to me, a far greater abomination. The SEC gobbled up the two prize programs from the Big 12, creating a Super Conference. There clearly is no leadership.
College sports compete on the field, but they share a common interest in keeping fans engaged and consequently the money rolling in. The NFL has a strong commissioner that realizes this and has revenue sharing and salary cap guidelines that ensures all participants generate competitive interest. The NBA and MLB, not so much, guess which organization is thriving while the other two are treading water?
I may be "chicken little" here regarding NCAA football, but I do know my exuberance for the sport has been dulled, just as it was for the NBA when LeBron James left Cleveland for Miami in the NBA and all those MLB stars headed to the Yankees and Dodgers.
Remember Tommy Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Ali? Pro boxing WAS a Marquee sport when it had a singularly powerful authority regulating the sport for the benefit of all. Today there is no central direction, can you name just one professional fighter?
