Lexington has great BBQ. I make a point to stop on my way to Sunset Beach.

I'm still slightly more partial to Eastern NC style.

The ONLY thing that I like about Western NC BBQ is the red BBQ slaw. We don't eat it down east, but we really should!

I view Lexington style as its own thing. Western is less vinegary. Lexington still has the nice strong vinegar/pepper base of the eastern NC style.

RE: Best BBQ and Beer Breweries in the AAC?
Probably the best internet resource for North Carolina bbq is bbqjew.com. It's a few years out of date, but they reviewed tons of BBQ joints across the state. They have a really funny take on Jews and BBQ.

Quote:Q: Just what is a BBQ Jew?
A: A person of Jewish descent who partakes of the pork barbecue.

Q: Who are these BBQ Jews?
A: Two 30-somethings who believe juicy pork barbecue and Judaism can coexist. That’s what the Day of Atonement is for, right?

Q: Why should we trust your barbecue reviews?
A: Blind faith.

Q: Is barbecue kosher?
A: Next question. (Don’t Ask. Don’t tell.)

Q: No seriously, what’s the deal?
A: Neither of us keep kosher. But…we believe that if the fellas who wrote the dietary restrictions lived in North Carolina, they’d not only allow Jews to eat swine, but command it!

Q: So you guys prefer to spell it with a ‘c’ rather than a ‘q’?
A: As long as you’re paying, we’re flexible.

Q: Do you prefer Eastern or Lexington style?
A: Nice try.

Charlotte isn't really known for its BBQ, you really have to get out of the city. Head down to Peachland to Jon G's or find their food truck for great brisket. Or Sweet Lew's and McKoy's is decent. Don't believe the Mac's hype.

For Beer, Charlotte has new breweries announced every month. The best ones in my opinion are Resident Culture, Divine Barrel. Asheville's Burial and San Antonio's Weathered Souls will be opening here within a year. Burial is the best brewery in the state. They do everything well - IPAs, stouts, farmhouse, etc.

no one should be recommending macs, or midwood. They are just locally owned overpriced Sonnys. Lexington has good Q, i've heard nice things about Jon Gs atlhough that isn't NC style. I also like Red Bridges in Shelby for the BBQ only.

Charlottes beer scene is weird. There are way too many breweries. Burial is my favorite hands down in the area at all, and other than Treehouse in Mass, its the only one that really lives up to the hype. If you like German Style, Olde Mecklenburg is a must, I regularly take Germans from Dusseldorf there to try their altbier, to great acclaim. Middle James in Pineville is wildly underrated. Legion, Town and Assclown (yes, Assclown) make solid, but not spectacular brews. The rest kind of blend together for me.

I don't live near Charlotte, but I picked up a 6 pack of Olde Meck Altbier and I heartily approve.

clt says you gotta put slaw on your bbq sandwich, then add a little sauce. let it sit for 3-4 mins to soak into the bun

My point is just that I wish the folks in Greenville would embrace red slaw (or BBQ slaw, for the natives). I do love regular slaw, too.

Not trying to thow the proverbial banana peel under the footing of such a nice conversation but this has to be stated for the record again. Texas brisket is some gooooood stuff. I like it alot. But it ain't barbecue.

Real barbecue is a noun and it's spelled p i double g HAWG.

Now, carry on. 04-cheers

Not trying to throw said banana peel in the trash, but that's just something the people who don't know how to do brisket say.

Beef is king. Does Carolyn even do ribs to be squealin' so much about pee eye gee gee?

Meh. San Antonio has no quality Q joints of their own though... heck, Bill Miller's is SA's claim to fame. So, not quite sure San Antonians even understand what real BBQ is. (shots fired!!)

Hey I can talk, I was born in San Antonio, but I know a thing or two about BBQ because I've seen/eaten/made a thing or two about BBQ.

My mind is imploding because of that statement... "beef isn't bbq"... I can't figure out what you're really trying to say. The meaning is either too subtle to really matter, or is just nonsense... I can't tell which yet.

The good thing about all the breweries in Charlotte is there's one for everyone's tastes. I'm just not a fan of any of the ones you listed except for Burial and I've explored most of the breweries in Charlotte. I don't think there are too many. With Charlotte's growth, it can still support more but I think they just need to look at other areas of the city instead of NoDa, Plaza/Midwood and Southend. I suspect we'll see a cluster up in the North End area soon.

Great beer and breweries throughout Central Florida - St. Pete to the Space Coast. Florida Man (Cigar City) is my go to beer.

BBQ, on the other hand, nothing special happening here. There are good spots with pitmasters who know what they are doing but anyone with Youtube and some time on their hands can make that claim as well. I cant think of anywhere that people should go out of their way (more than ~30 minutes) to try.

taste plays a large part. Also you switch up beers over time. 5-7 years ago i would only drink IPAs, now I only drink them occasionally and prefer other styles. I'll die on the hill that OMB copper is the best beer brewed by a Charlotte brewer.
I think some of the burbs and outer lying areas are getting decent breweries that is helping. I live in a beer desert that I hope will get some attention when ballantyne builds the new cluster/walking city to compete with Southend.
