ACC Divisional Setup
Any reasons the divisions are what they are? It’s an odd grouping they have right now.

When can they be changed?

ACC Coastal
Clemson
UNC
Duke
Wake Forest
NC State
Virginia Tech
Virginia

ACC Atlantic
Miami
Florida State
Georgia Tech
Louisville
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
Boston College

Don’t understand why it’s not a Carolinas-Virginia / old Big East setup. Seems more balanced too and more rivalries.

ACC Divisional Setup
The divisions as is are for recruiting. With a Florida team in each division, everyone can promise recruits games in their home state during their careers. If we go to the traditional ACC vs Big East alignment you are suggesting the Big East side would have a recruiting advantage.

Swap Virginia Tech and Florida St. and I think it'll be solid. Then add protected rivalries for Virginia-VT, Clem-GT, and FSU-Miami, and let the northern 4 schools rotate a game with the NC schools.

Poach WVU/UC prior to next TV deal:

North: WVU, UL, UC, Miami, VA Tech, BC, Cuse, Pitt
South: FSU, Clemson, UNC, NC State, UVa, WF, Duke, GaTech

Protected: Miami/FSU, UVa/VaTech

Done.

Back in 2005 it seemed like the divisions were set up so Miami and FSU could meet in the ACC Championship game every year. LOL.

RE: ACC Divisional Setup
The original push to 12 was so they could put Miami and FSU in separate divisions, so ACC championship game would be an annual clash between those two for a spot in the BCS championship. VT and Miami had developed a rivalry from the Big East, so they were put together when divisions formed. BC was the odd man out from the Big East. Syracuse was put with BC when they came on, so Pitt got put in the Coastal by default. Louisville took Maryland's spot in the Atlantic when they left.

Actually other than some rivalries with Maryland lost with UVA, UNC, and Duke, the original division breakdown and cross-division rivals worked pretty well. Wake lost some rivalries, but let's be honest... no one considers Wake a rival in football.

RE: ACC Divisional Setup
I think the divisions are pretty solid, the only reason they seem lopsided is because FSU and Clemson have won NC's recently whereas the other division hasn't. The expectation was Miami and VT would anchor the Coastal, based on their success in the early 2000's prior to joining the league.

Then you have the Carolina schools. Makes sense to have them in the same division.... if you're a Carolina school. But it would suck for anyone else in that division, so it makes sense to have them split.

So you have a Florida school in each division, two Carolina schools in each division, a Virginia school in each division, Pitt and Syracuse split. Louisville filled Maryland's spot in the Atlantic, so a split between them and GT are a wash. The only real outlier is BC.

RE: ACC Divisional Setup
I believe all the P5 conferences should get rid of their divisions. But if you had to pick 1 P5 conference especially that should get rid of its divisions it should be the ACC.

Divisions that are set up where the teams are not close together geographicly and do not have historical rivals playing each other just are not worth it. The fact that nobody can remember who is in what division is proof they make little sense.

Then you throw in a schedule with protected cross division rivals with only an 8 game conference schedule and the end result is some teams end up only playing each other once every 6 years.

It is nonsense that WF- UNC need to play OOC because they only play once every 6 years otherwise.

Its time to get the rules for the CCG changed permanently so that the ACC can finally scrap their goofy divisions. Go to a schedule with 3 protected rivals and play everybody else 50% of the time. Then have the top 2 teams go to the ccg.

Boring. This Carolina/Virginia & old Big East setup seems rather balanced and rivalry based and fun.

RE: ACC Divisional Setup
UNC, Duke, Virginia, and Georgia Tech want to be together. If the North Carolina schools all have to be together and Virginia Tech also has to be with UVa, that's one division. Then the Florida schools have to be together. But that gives the non Carolina/Virginia schools a recruiting disadvantage. Don't like it? Give Georgia Tech to the other division for one of the Florida schools. Or give Virginia Tech to the other division and set up UVa/VaT as the only permanent crossover.

It’s true. In 2003, actually, the divisions made sense. Then FSU and Miami proceeded to stink it up save for the Seminoles Winston title run.

Maryland should have been in the Coastal in place of VaTech from Day 1.

Last Saturday’s game seemed like a rivalry game as you’re gonna get as far as North Carolina football schools go.

RE: ACC Divisional Setup
ACC Fans have been wanting re-alignment but Swofford did not want it. As for Rivalry, Wake has been a thorn in NCSU side for years. Especially at Winston-Salem.I consider Wake more of a Football School than Duke. Wake and Duke are natural rivals. I wish NCSU had done what Wake and UNC did, schedule an OOC series. It is ridiculous for NCSU and Duke play twice every 12 years. While not national interest, the 4 NC schools always draws interest when they play each other,

I have been amazed Wake has been able to keep their coach as long as they have. I thought a larger school would have come in and hired by now.

RE: ACC Divisional Setup
The original ACC divisions weren’t bad but they are pretty busted now, especially considering how infrequently the 6 teams in the opposite division who aren’t your crossover are on you’re schedule.

The whole system was built on setting up a Miami-FSU showdown for the CCG, with VT and Clemson also providing strength to each division. Miami just hasn’t been the same team since 2004 that they were the 25 yrs prior to that.

There just doesn’t seem to be a split with the current 14 that doesn’t leave someone an odd man or out or schools griping about recruiting ground access.

My best thought would be to force WF to be the odd ball:

BC
Cuse
Pitt
VT (UVA crossover)
L’ville
WF (Duke crossover)
Miami (FSU crossover)

I’d then guarantee WF at least 1 instate crossover in conference and then encourage NC St/UNC to schedule them OOC.

Seems like the most amicable way to split.

Yes, all conferences should get rid of divisions. Evidence shows that rivalry and conference games are the most important to fans. Inter-conference, G5, and FCS games continue to hamper ratings. Plus, each conference seems to have an imbalance between divisions. Wisconsin continues to get torched by Eastern opponents for example. And the SEC East has been brutal until Georgias recent emergence.

The VA-2 & NC-4 should be in the same division no matter what.

From there, Clemson-GT, Miami-FSU, and the NE-3 (BC, SU, Pitt) should be in the same division.

By default, that leaves Louisville in the VA/NC division.

But the important thing is the VA-2/NC-4 should be playing every year.

The short answer is that when Pitt and Syracuse came on board, at least 11 of the 14 schools voted to put the current alignment into the ACC bylaws. And the ACC Commissioner did not have a vote.

Clemson wants to be in a division with FSU, but if you were to swap Wake for Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech for FSU this would work and more effectively cordon off the Big East survivors from the real ACC schools. Sorry Wake. Still, scrapping divisions and going to three permanent rivals and five of the other ten every other year would make more sense.
