RE: Will Southern Miss Leave Early?
The other day I felt prickish about it and was even thinking that us and UAB were the last two originals left, they should just let us go. Set us free.

But we know that ain't happening.

Difference is you don’t get league disbursements so we’re having to negotiate a payment in lieu of your disbursements being taken away

Ok that makes sense and is clarifying. Thanks.

This doesn't make sense. They are keeping that revenue whether you are there or not. So if you exit early and have to negotiate a payment, they keep the revenues AND take a payment from you?

If you can say "keep the cash" I'm out, that would serve the same purpose while not costing USM anything. The net gain in travel costs and league distribution would be more than what C-USA is giving USM anyway.

Fastest way to raise your margins is to lower your bottom line. Some weird math to justify it but the biggest boon to everyone's cash flow will be reduced costs, not increased revenues.

I interpreted it as referring to the SBC starting revenue payments to the three new schools in July 2022 instead of 2023 if we come over early. If an extra payment to CUSA is what he meant, we should hold our nose until 2023.

Yeah essentially you’d forfeit your revenue this year and would rather than forfeiting next years revenue simply cut a check for that, and move early. You would then get normal SBC disbursements in 2022

No one knows. I’m even offering a best guesstimate from what I heard. I still have questions if the 14 month notice part of the contract is enforceable

I said this elsewhere.. I'm not an AD nor do I know anyone that is, but I know there's probably language in there about leaving early. Regardless of how it happens exit fees are due and you have to give notice.

I feel like TCU gave notice a day or two after they lost the Conference title to us back in 2003 and the next season was in the MWC. Maybe I'm remembering wrong.

I'm about 70% sure all 3 will be in the Belt next year. No clue what JMU can or will do.

TCU played in CUSA for 2004 and went to MWC for 2005.

If CUSA throws a hissy and tries to claim us leaving a whole 4 months early causes additional damages due to scheduling and other logistic challenges, we merely point to CUSA’s established precedent of a having a school abruptly drop football for 2 years without penalty.

They already get exit fees by way of USM foregoing conference revenues. So it doesn't matter if USM is there or not, the league isn't paying out those distributions to USM anyway so that money goes back in the pot.

The upside for USM is that they don't miss a year of conference revenue if they leave C-USA in 2022. The same situation applies for ODU and Marshall. C-USA gets their money because it's just revenues not paid and Marshall, ODU, and USM don't miss a year of cash flow if they come next season.

If the CAA is to be believed, it would appear JMU will effectively be an FCS independent in 2022, but will count as an FBS win for everyone they play. So it's conceivable that some scheduling changes could be made to accommodate some people and maybe fill out JMU's schedule. JMU may not like it but based on what jve seen, they are probably a 4-4 or 5-3 SBC team right now so it may be good to get into FBS play in 2022.

I’d agree with that. I think App, Marshall, Coastal, and Louisiana would be tough games to win right now. I like our chances against the rest of the belt. I do think we steal one of those games though against that 4

Troy would be a good test for JMU. We aren't top in the Belt right now but our talent is better than our 5-4 overall suggest. It would be a slug fest that's for sure.

So if USM leaves early, is the CFP and media payout adjusted to C-USA? If the revenue to C-USA from their revenue streams remains unchanged if USM leaves early, do they have to cut a check?

If the payout to the conference I decreased with USM leaving early I understand why they would need to cut a check. Depending on the amount of the check, interest on the capital, and expected revenues and cost savings from moving to the Sun Belt, they could determine if leaving early may actually MAKE them some money; I expect that the reduction in travel expenditures alone would cover some of the costs and increased revenues from the Sun Belt may result in a positive net, even if the cash was borrowed.

I've watched some JMU games this year where I can find replays or something. I think JMU is good, but against App, Marshall, and Louisiana you need depth. The joke around here about Louisiana was that they look like am SEC team getting off the bus (their star DT is 6'5 350 lbs and will be in the NFL undoubtedly) but never played like it. Well now, at least when they play App, they play to that size and it's scary good.

I could see JMU winning one of the games if the conditions are right but it would be a very tall task. The point of getting as many games scheduled for 2022 as possible is for acclimation. If your coach is smart, nearly everyone will be redshirted in 2022 and 2023 so by 2024 and beyond tou have a youthful team with quality depth along the fronts and at running back.

There is no such thing as an automatic win in this league anymore. Not even ULM or Texas State is a given. In 2019 App is playing a decent Georgia Southern team and loses, the next week they go beat USC and finish 13-1. This year App loses to Miami by 2 and the final drive saw 3 straight drops by veteran guys who don't drop passes, and Miami was gifted 9 points in that game. Then App gets steamrolled by Louisiana who hasn't beaten anyone else by more than one score. Then turns around and hold Coastal to 370 yards of offense when they are averaging close to 600.

That type of crap happens here now. Nothing is assured and it's only going to get worse.

Southern Miss people, what kind of offense is Hall running? Against USA you're running some old Power I option stuff then some spread option, and I haven't seen that being run anymore. Seems you still have a mobile QB so why not continue?

We don't have a mobile QB right now... We are down to a walk-on QB who couldn't start for his HS (current starter) wearing #24, a grad assistant who never played a down of CFB until this year (backup), and a guy from Louisville who seems to be a major bust (now 2nd backup). 03-banghead

Right now, Hall is just trying to run some sort of a mix offense that caters to the QB situation described above. The first 3 QBs who were on the depth chart all have sustained injuries at various points that have basically knocked them out for the year. We even put in a WR who played QB in HS and he got injured. We are in that bad of a situation when it comes to QB. You will have to watch games over the last couple weeks to see what I'm talking about and why we are doing so poorly on offense.

Gotcha. I thought it was all weird but 24 doesn't look terrible. He looks inexperienced. I'd say if he had been prepared as a back-up through a Redshirt year, freshmen year, and sophomore year that he may be serviceable. But that offense Hall wants to run is a real throw back to the 90's and early 2000's. Will be interesting to see how long Hall sticks to it if you don't have a stout defense.
