Upcoming Indiana game
Indiana is coming off a losing season in the Big Ten and has brought in former player and NBA coach Mile Woodson to re-vamp the bb program. He has installed a pro offense and man to man defense much like EMU’s HC has.

Indiana’s starting line-up likely will be 6’3” Xavier Johnson, SG 6’4” Parker Stewart , 6’7” SF Miller Koop, and upfront 6’8” Race Thompson, and 6’9 Jackson-Davis. This was Indiana’s starting line-up in the Bahamas. Johnson, Stewart, and Koop are transfers.

6’9” PF Jackson-Davis (18.9 ppg, 9 rebounds per game) overpowers his opponent. Not a good two-point jump shooter, but he’s worked hard to improve it.

Also returning is stocky and powerful 6’6” SG Jordan Geronimi, who can hit the three-ball (40 percent), and can get to the hoop. Likely to come off the bench, but will likely work his way into the starting line-up. AverGed only 8-minutes per game last season. This could be his break-out season.

Pittsburg transfer 6’3” PG Xavier Johnson will at the helm. He’s extremely fast, makes assists, is not a good shooter, and last season turned the ball once every 10 minutes. Shot 28 percent on three’s. Can get to the rim.

He will face off against EMU’s 6’2” PG Noah Farrakhan who’s a better scorer. Should be interesting to see the two go at it. Should be a track meet. Suspect Indiana will throw everything at him to stop his penetration.

Johnson’s back-ups are returning 6’1 PG Rob Phinisee, and Kristian Landers. Both sub-par players.

Indiana 6’5” SG Parker Stewart is a 34 percent three-ball shooter who can shoot from deep. He’s a streaky shooter. Can get to the hoop and the foul-line. Is very good at making steals.

Returning SG Trey Galloway is poor 3-point shooter, shoots rarely, and has a high turnover rate. Also returning is SG Anthony Leal. Both are likely to play limited minutes.

Transferring in from Northwestern is 6-7 Miller Koop who is a less than average SF. At Northwestern, shot 46 percent on two’s, 29 percent on three’s, and rarely gets to the foul-line. Shouldn’t be in starting line-up. Poor defender.

Also returning is 6’8” PF Race Thomson who averaged 8.9 ppg, 6 rebounds per game). He’s a jack of all trades. Can shoot mid-range jump shots, but not 3-pointers (18 percent). Can get to the hoop.

Indiana has brought in an impactful freshman HS 5-star 6’5” Tamar Bates, who can shoot the 3-ball from anywhere and get to the hoop. EMU will need to pay particular attention to him, Jackson-Davis, and Geronimi.

The other freshman is 6’8” Center Logan Duncomb who will likely come off the bench as will 7-foot USF transfer Micheal Durr.

Woodson likes the inside-out game with passes to the three-point line for catch and shoot.

He also likes back-cuts.

Indiana will play small-ball at times.

EMU can play with Indiana. EMU has to be careful not to take themselves out of this game with excessive fouls.

EMU needs to win the turnover battle, keep home-court refs out of the game by not committing more than 13 fouls, avoid committing shooting fouls, and limit Indiana to making no more than 5-three’s. The later is going to take a strong commitment to stopping the three-ball.

Looking forward to seeing EMU in action…….but I wish this game was a couple weeks into the season so our team could gel against easier competition and build up their confidence. Here we go…….

Maybe so, but Indiana is uncertain as what they have, by having added three new transfers who are impact players to their starting line-up, and having to rely on Geronimi who hardly played last season, and freshman Bates and Duncomb coming off the bench provide fire power off the bench.

One Indiana poster expressed that he’s worried because Indiana was bad last season, has reconstituted itself with new players, and is playing it’s first game together. He predicted Indiana would beat EMU by some four points, 76-72. Others indiana fans, relying on EMU’s unwarranted low ranking and knowing zip about EMU’s personnel, has Indiana winning by a large margin.

EMU has quite a few good talented players, and the team has depth. In EMU’s two exhibition games, we’ve witnessed aggressive play, players can both penetrate the paint, shoot well, and have kept their turnovers and fouling down. We’ll see if Indiana is as organized.

Expect EMU to be both confident and hungry to take on a highly ranked team. Some EMU players have played against nation’s best players and succeeded. Believe EMU can play with anyone. If EMU has a glaring witness, I haven’t seen it yet. Do think regardless of outcome, EMU will get a lot of respect nationwide going forward. Just wish game was on neutral court.

Think we’ll learn about EMU in this game. Bring it on!

Lucky I am hoping for a good showing BUT we are playing at Assembly Hall, with home court officials and a team with more talent and a first year coach looking to make a splash.

I'm glad our kids will experience having 17K rabid fans watching them play but I'm with Eagle Sam, our season starts with Illinois St. I will be sanguine with any result other than setting the NCAA record for fewest points in a half like we did vs. Rutgers.

Honestly MAC basketball needs a serious rebuild, our football team is going to more competitive to Indiana than our basketball club. No worries on the outcome of this game for me.

Well stated, Jerry! Looks like CC has EMU respectable now it’s time for Heath to exceed CCs football expectations.

Don’t think that Indiana is deserving of being rated the 30th best team in the nation as they will be starting three new players who are not impressive. Plus they are projected to finish 6th in the Big Ten. Believe their high rating has’ore to do with the conference they play-in, and such is not based on how good they are.

Indiana’s returning impact player is 6’9” PF Jackson-Davis (18.9 ppg, 9 rebounds per game) who’s a powerful who tries to over power his opponent. He’s not been a good two-point jump shooter, but he’s worked hard to improve.

EMU will need to pay particular attention to him, as well as Jackson-Davis, and Geronimi. Do believe that all three players will need to play well in order for Indiana to prevail.

Another good freshman is 6’8” Center Logan Duncomb who will likely come off the bench, as will 7-foot USF transfer Micheal Durr.

Woodson likes the inside-out game with passes to three-point line. For catch and shooters.

Both teams are talented. Indiana’s HC Mike Woodson can’t make a big splash unless he has a better offensive and defensive system, and has players that play better in his system than EMU players perform in HC Heath’s system. Not sure that will happen.

On EMU mens bb Twitter video, EMU players describe EMU as having very talented players. In the same video HC Heath speaks very highly of Farrakhan, Golson, and Njie.

EMU gelled from the get-go in their two exhibition games. Realize fans now want to see how EMU performs agains better competition. Win or lose, i’m confident that EMU will play very well against Indiana.

Not that difficult to take home court refs out of the Indiana game. Players just have to learn how to play aggressively without fouling. Not sure if EMU player’s are there yet. Encouraged by the fact in Goshon exhibition game, Goshon only took eight foul-shots and scored but 3-points at the foul-line.

For me, the Indiana game is more important about how well EMU plays, not the outcome.

If EMU loses by 4-8 points to 30th ranked Indiana, wouldn’t that instill respect and fear into EMU conference opponents? Wouldn’t EMU be worthy of being ranked among nation’s top 100 teams?

RE: Upcoming Indiana game
I think the glaring weakness is the center position. Jerry raises an excellent point in another thread that the game has evolved to a point where the traditional center is not as dominant. But I would reiterate that we may not have anyone that can play center effectively- traditional or otherwise.

And as far as MAC level competition, I am quite pleased with Golson as power forward. But he and backups may not fair that well against a solid P5/6 team.

Otherwise, I think EMU is stocked at guards in terms quality starters and depth.

Observers and EMU players alike believe Njie has the potential to play in the NBA. Reportedly unstoppable scoring down low and can hit the three-ball. EMU has two of the best freshmen in the nation.

Indiana fan on upcoming EMU game: “Until I see that we don’t struggle, I can’t say we won’t struggle. The nucleus of our team is back.”

RE: Upcoming Indiana game
While Noah Farrakhan and Monty Scott have played together in only two EMU exhibition games, throughout HS and college they have played together.

When Scott played for Temple, Noah would visit and they both would play together in pick-up games against Temple’s bb players.

When home during the summer they would play together nightly against high-level college players in pick-up games as well.

Until I see him play, I just assume he is out and does not factor into my evaluation of EMU’s weaknesses. But I do appreciate the inside perspective, Miggy. And for his sake (and EMU’s), I do hope he recovers quickly. Any word on his injury status?

I would like to see Njie play as well. But I accept opinions from
EMU players, coaches, and observers who say he’s terrific. HC Heath in a recent video said that Njie, Farrakhan, and Golson are terrific freshmen. We’ve seen he’s accurate regarding Farrakhan and Golson.

Sure Indiana would like to know as well whether Njie will playing tomorrow night.

Point spread probably based on Farrakhan averaging 3-ppg last season. Point spread as accurate as rankings.

Woodson said today his starting line-up includes front-line of SF Koop, 6’7” Thompson 6’8”, and Jackson-Davis 6’9.”

7’1” transfer Durr is recovering from injury as is 5-star HS freshman SG Tamar Bates. (Hip-pointer).. Not clear if they’ll play.

Indiana likely going to full-court press.

17,000 fans expected in attendance.

Love that Spottsville said that EMU has a “talented” team. It does.

RE: Upcoming Indiana game
If we were at full strength, and without watching IU yet, I would predict we stay within 15-18 points. I still believe we can stay within 24 points if the game doesn’t seem too big for our freshman.

If IU presses us it will be a great tune up for the rest of the season. When I was coaching travel basketball teams, I used to tell my kids: “ if you can play fast then you can play slow tempo as well “ Teams that can get after it and force you to play uptempo have a distinct advantage over teams that play at a slower tempo and can not play fast. An analogy is like in football if you can only pass or run the ball but you can not do both, it’s easier for the opponents to develop a defensive scheme for a one dimensional plan. Let’s hope that the stage is not too big for our freshmen and that Spotts can shoot a decent percentage tonight.

Let’s go Eagles!

Rough start. I like the ball movement, but they are much superior athletically. Haven’t been bad defensively. Axel has been strong around the rim.
