Rivalries
All long term rivalries for Memphis are officially dead now.
Louisville? Been gone.
Southern Miss? Been gone.
Cincinnati? Gone.
Houston had kind of grown into a rivalry but - gone.
UCF - this had turned into something - gone.
UAB? I mean, I guess. They just haven't been around long enough to call it a long-term rivalry and lets face it - Memphis is actively trying to leave the AAC for the B12 and, depending on how things go might consider the MWC in a few years IF the B12 does not come through and the new adds drag the AAC down.
There is simply no long term history between Memphis and any team left in the AAC. You can't simply waive your hands and conjure up a rivalry especially when your conference membership isn't stable.
Its a shame that Memphis has been separated from all its old rivals one way or another.
How far down the list of teams that you are excited to see Memphis play do you have to get before you get to a nAAC member. Its pretty far down for me....

Looks like it will have to be UAB and SMU in the near term.

In a perfect world we play Louisville in basketball and/or football, UT in basketball, and Ole Miss in football every year. Maybe when/if we're in the B12 they will be more willing.

In a perfect world, we’re in the ACC and none of the above really matters much.

Until things change, hope we can start beating Tulsa consistently. It's getting embarrassing!

RE: Rivalries
UCF wasn't really a rival until recently, when we began knocking heads in a new conference.
Could easily see someone else stepping up to take their place within 3 years.
Louisville, Cincy, Houston - those were rivals.
BEast stole them before. Then the ACC. Now the B12.
Forget UAB and USM. Forget even Old Miss, MissStake, and Vandy. These are the 3 programs (along with UTK) I'd like to see us playing OOC most of all. All sports.

I suggest that we create new rivals as soon as possible by beating the crap out of each and every one of these new additions. Run up the score and make them wish they had never come into the AAC. Maybe they would change their mind and go looking for a lesser conference to join. That is if there is a lesser conference than the AAC !!!!!

Many of you are getting way ahead of yourselves, assuming we will ever play a schedule without Cincy, Houston and UCF or that we will ever play in this reconstituted AAC. Let’s wait and see how this shakes out.
If UT/OU leave the B12 and they don’t add more teams, or they do add teams and we aren’t in the mix, then it’s time to adjust to a new reality. But for now there are likely more dominoes to fall in the near future.

Yeah for me it's primarily Louisville and Cincinnati, then Mississippi, then Houston, then UT, then UCF.
We've played USM in football for a looooooong time and not for about 10 years so, yeah - this one time rivalry has really wilted and faded away along with their athletics - shame.
We've only played UAB 15 times total in football - that's it - and they've won 10 due to the shambles fb used to be but honestly they are not on any list of rivals that I would come up with - maybe in bb but not really.
UAB, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, USF, - none of the nAAC members move the needle at all for me. Sure - want to win the games on the schedule but as far as rivalries go it's a big zero.
The conference realignment fairy comes along about every decade and takes the top off the G5 so there simply isn't time to build anything like the historical rivals that exist in the P5 and even some of those have been borked by realignment.

Well, for now, the nAAC is what we're stuck with. IF we get out fine but until we have - we haven't.

RE: Rivalries
Now that I think about it, here is my list. All sports. If I went fb-only or bb-only it would look slightly different. So this is all sports:
1 - Louisville
2 - UTK
3 - Cincy
4 - Old Miss
5 - Houston
6 - tie UCF, SMU, MissStake, Arkinsaw, Vandy
then everybody else
Unfortunately, we have been playing only 4 of these regularly, and that could be going to 1 in the future.
I know the $EC like to look down their noses at us and don't want to come to play us home-home. And now that both fb and bb can beat them, they don't want to risk a loss either.
However, I don't understand why a L'ville series has never come about.
And I'm hopeful that UH and UC will want to continue to play us regardless of conference.

This is what so called Tiger fans have been saying about every conference the Tigers have been in. As far as I can remember the Tigers have won two conference football titles out right: Missouri Valley and more recently AAC. Stop bitchin and start supporting. Don't dismiss opponents as inferior when most of the time the team plays in a half empty stadium with little inspiration from the city. GoTigersGo win the conference you are in.
Oh and here are the rivals: UCF, USF, ECU, Temple, Navy, Cincinnati. Tulane, SMU, Houston, and Tulsa. They are all conference rivals.

If, and who knows, but if this 14 team AAC remains, we HAVE to make every effort to play Louisville or Miss or Moo etc every year. Maybe two of them

We need OUT asap hopefully to the B12 but if that falls apart maybe the MWC will expand with Memphis, SMU, Tulsa, and Tulane.
Louisville, Cincinnati, Houston, Mississippi, Mississippi State, UT, Arkansas, USM, UCF -
Try for Louisville and either Mississippi or Mississippi State plus one more off the list every year in fb and Louisville, Cincinnati, Houston, UT, and a couple more off this list every year in bb.
UAB is simply NOT a rival in either sport.
Sheesh - really, really need that B12 invite and soon.
