RE: CBS Sports - AAC Targeting Mountain West Powers
Aresco has to try this, simply because there just aren’t any good programs elsewhere. C-USA and Sunbelt teams aren’t even close replacements for what we’ve lost.

That said, I’d be very surprised if any of these MWC teams consider moving to the AAC now. It’s easy to look back and “what if”, but we would have had a very good chance of enticing them before we lost 3 schools. They’d have to see the AAC as equivalent at best, but much worse geography. But, it’s certainly worth a try.

My guess is we get a few C-USA and/or Sunbelt teams.

RE: CBS Sports - AAC Targeting Mountain West Powers
It all hangs on the Four if's:

IF #1:

If its true that Aresco is only talking to schools that reached out to him - then the MWC programs in question are already interested in potentially joining.

IF #2:

If the Divisions/scheduling can be worked out to everyone's satisfaction then this gathers steam and becomes a movement.

If #3:

If ESPN sees the value and joyfully funds the thing making it advantageous and profitable for the MWC group then it gets past discussion and goes to decision making time.

If #4: I forget number 4. Oh wait....I got it - If the AAC has any brains and eliminates the conference entry fees and then helps the decision by using the Exalted Ones exit fees to help pay the MWC groups exit fees - then this goes in the win column for Aresco.

Note: This is nothing more than an outsiders personal opinion and its highly likely biased and perhaps missing a few IFs, Ands and Buts.

Like I said earlier, he has to reach out to the best teams, regardless of geography. But I just don’t see what we have to offer them without UH, Cinci, and UCF. I think, without question, we are the best if what’s left. But take a look at our conference after the 3 leave, it’s really not good at all. I can’t see a draw for them to play coast to coast when it’s not really an upgrade. The MWC will, by default, probably become the best of the rest (non power conferences).

Another interesting part of the article. Not saying it would happen or anything.

Quote:Big 12 executives are also watching closely as the Pac-12 negotiates a new TV deal in 2024 when its current agreement with Fox and ESPN expires. If the Pac-12 media rights revenue approximates that of the Big 12 at that time, there is a feeling within the Big 12 some Pac-12 schools might be interested in joining.

I don’t see that happening. The Big 12 is a very fragile conference. If the PAC, B1G, ACC, or SEC (not happening) offer any of the Big 12 a lifeline, they’re gone. We would do the same if we got in and we’re offered a spot in the P4 too.

I agree. Big 12 is a dumpster fire. No other conference is close to the numbskull decisions the Big 12 has made over the past decade. Why would any team choose to leave one of the Big 4 to go to the Big 12?

Unless the Big 12 gets a solid deal and sign a GORs of which there is a very good chance since the Big 12 would be a well paid P5 conference.

The Big 12 is a distant 5th and every school is looking for a way to get into the top 4.

This news might also cause the B12 to go ahead and invite Boise and Memphis if they are actually thinking about it....

the rumor mill has been saying that the PAC12 may want to invite Houston and TCU...so who knows?

I can't think of a reason why it would cause the Big 12 do that.

I guess if they cared about teams playing musical chairs they might want to go ahead and pull the trigger. That’s probably not a factor, however.

Something like that. Who knows what they are really thinking though? Maybe if they are going to do invite these two then why not go ahead and give them the boost and not cause Boise to have to wind and unwind stuff?

NB12 is a distant 5 now because they have already lost their premiere teams. If PAC looses USC +1 or ACC looses Clemson + 1 then those are down to very similar levels as NB12 & their TV deals will reflect as such.

If BIG continues to throw PAC a lifeline by raiding ACC instead for 2 of their AAU schools, that might prompt Clemson to make the jump to SEC ( & yes they would take them), then you could argue ACC is weaker than NB12….then realignment gets real interesting.

RE: CBS Sports - AAC Targeting Mountain West Powers
Once you get west of the Mississippi the distance between towns expands greatly.

It is farther from Dallas to Boise than it is from Dallas to Philadelphia.

You're talking about 2,000+ miles from the majority of the AAC to Boise.

Far too far for non-revenue teams travelling by bus.

Especially for midweek games.

Unless you're going to 16 and add most of the MWC as the west conference it is not workable for non revenue teams.

Fair point. Not sure what kind of exit fee Boise would have, but I’m sure they wouldn’t want to do that twice. However it shakes out, I’m skeptical about BSU to the AAC.

I’d be surprised if Boise did anything. We just lost three of our top four programs. They know a fourth is out the door as soon as the phone rings. They may well be on a short list with that fourth for further Big12 expansion. Why bother?

At the very end of the article they mention the idea that after a handful of teams leave the AAC
that here would not be as big a difference between the AAC, CUSA and the SunBelt, so taking all those schools and regionalizing them

I’d agree except even with Houston, Cincy and the ridiculous UCF, good Memphis like programs but not earth movers, the AAC is still better than those other two. Maybe just for now but it still isn’t that close

Memphis, Tulane, Tulsa, Navy, SMU, East Carolina, USF, Temple and Wichita State in basketball is still solidly better than the Belt or CUSA and better than the best 9 from those leagues combined

TX culture joining Calif culture? PAC reportedly already has an us vs them thing going on for non Calif schools.
