Is this what Vietnam felt like - serious responses requested
I was born during the peak of the Reagan Administration so I only know Vietnam through what I have read.

Sitting here watching the Taliban retake Afghanistan I ask is this what Vietnam felt like? I have never been a proponent of being in. Afghanistan, but it is saddening to see a country fall after so much money and so many lives were invested in the country. It's incredibly tough to think about the lives of the women and children and the horrible future they know face

RE: Is this what Vietnam felt like - serious responses requested
Although I wasn't involved in the mass exodus from VN I was around in 1975 at the age of 27. It was all over the newspapers and tv about how the VN people that had helped the US in some way were hoping to get out. The crowds trying to get into helicopters resembled the workers in NY trying to board a subway train. It was a sad sight to see after knowing how many Americans had lost their lives needlessly in that stupid war. If the Americans had only listened to Ho Chi Minh who only wanted to unite his nation and left it alone we would have had the same political government that VN has now with zero lives lost. That Danged Demoncrap Kennedy thought that the Americans could do what the French weren't able to accomplish. Even if we had stayed until the finish and won the US was prepared to hand it over to the Frenchies anyway. National pride is a wonderful thing but not at the expense of thousands of young lives lost in a never ending conflict.

Screw Kennedy, that philanderer and his party. It took a Republican to get us out and his reward was to resign.

Our operations were limited to assisting the south Vietnamese prior to Kennedy’s death. I won’t pretend to be an expert on the era, but seems Johnson is more to blame than Kennedy?

This is similar to the end of Veitnam, but it will probably differ in one key way.

The communists tried to go about killing their enemies quietly.

I suspect the Taliban will make a public show of it.

LBJ indeed deserved more the blame. Very few are aware that early in the war Eisenhower came to the WH and told LBJ how to win the war and win it quickly and Johnson just ignored him to Ike’s dismay. It was so disastrous that LBJ would finish breakfast and personally pick bombing targets for the day from a larger map of Vietnam

The communist had some plan for an economy. These animals have no desire to join the world in any sane way. They are all about death and destruction.

LBJ liked moving piles of rocks with the bombs.

Perhaps

I think China and Russia will find willing partners with the Taliban

Johnson is absolutely way more to blame than Kennedy. For someone to just write him off as a "Demoncrap" frankly pisses me off. It shows they're a hopelessly partisan dumbarse. I'd kill for JFK right now. He's the only one who had the balls to stand up to the MIC.

And for the OP... I wasn't alive then either but I do like history. From my POV this is way worse for some of the aforementioned reasons. This is going to be a straight up terrorist nation who now has some more modern tech in the free. Unbelievable **** we're watching right now.

Honestly, I think Viet Nam was worse.

The cost in human terms was far, far greater in Viet Nam than Afghanistan. I don’t mean to trivialize the lives lost in Afghanistan, but there were 58,000 war deaths in Viet Nam, 2400 in Afghanistan.

…….the Americans abandoning many, many in-country “helpers” is similar though.

As Owl said, both are cases of America expending young lives without any real plan to win…….political games by politicians with young American lives lost.

As much as I hate what has happened in Afghanistan, if they can’t stand out their own after 20 years - they never will, same as with Viet Nam. The opposition in both cases had the will to win, those we backed, not so much.

JFK was no choirboy. His dad was full blown mafia with blood on his hands. LBJ was bitter about how the nomination went down and J Edgar Hoover loathed the Kennedys. So, despite the rosy picture history paints of JFK he had enemies. But, folks were more respectful in those days and the office was held in high esteem. Bay of Pigs blunder put JFK in a hole early on. The Russians backing down in Cuba was his finest hour. He also possessed charisma and a brain. VN was started by JFK and escalated by LBJ. There was never any real plan in place to win the war. LBJ through the Federal Government set up an ammunition plant in Karnack, Texas. Home of Ladybird to sell munitions to to the army. Not sure what back room deals were cut to put this in place. Blood money 4 sure.

But watching today definitely draws parallels. I never thought we would find ourselves holding up a puppet government after VN but here we are. Same stupid mistakes. Same result and same disgusting ending. Big difference here is that since we have a neutered/ spayed MSM you won’t have it blaring all over the networks. No matter who anyone wants to blame history will hang it around the neck of Biden like an albatross bc he was there in charge Commander in Chief when it unfolded. But, rightfully so. He is one walking blunder after another.

VN will definitely always be more catastrophic bc up until that point in history we had never lost. We are getting better at it though. One Taiwan here or Ukraine there will show the world we are no longer a world power but a has been much like the UK of the 19th century

LBJ long knew the war as he was fighting it was unwinnable, but kept sending American young men to be killed. There are documented White House meetings.

The fall of Vietnam was much slower. But one similarity, the Vietnamese government abandoned the Highlands which was a strongpoint of government support. After that the rout was on. The Afghan government seemed to abandon the North, which the Taliban never controlled before. And then it fell in days.

You could see the fall of Vietnam coming for a while. Afghanistan's quick fall was a shock. The Taliban must have infiltrated the Afghan military leadership.

JFK created the Vietnam mess. He was too immature to be president. LBJ understood how bad it was but kept making it worse.

JFK created the Cuba problem with his weakness. Russians did not back down in Cuba. We gave up missiles in Turkey for them giving up a handful of missiles going to Cuba. It was perhaps his worst hour and a demonstration of his incompetence.

LBJ indeed deserved more the blame. Very few are aware that early in the war Eisenhower came to the WH and told LBJ how to win the war and win it quickly and Johnson just ignored him to Ike’s dismay. It was so disastrous that LBJ would finish breakfast and personally pick bombing targets for the day from a larger map of Vietnam

LBJ was helping his military industrialist complex friends in TX make a busload of money; so the war was prolonged much more than it had to be.

Credit is due to South Vietnamese army, they held off the Vietcong as long as possible and delayed the inevitable for a couple of years. The Afghan army folded in a matter of days because Afghanistan isn’t a true nation in a tradition sense with a true national identity but rather it’s a bunch of long-standing various tribes located in a central area.

JFK created the Cuba problem with his weakness. Russians did not back down in Cuba. We gave up missiles in Turkey for them giving up a handful of missiles going to Cuba. It was perhaps his worst hour and a demonstration of his incompetence.

Not that I’m a fan of JFK, but he definitely won the Cuban Missile Crises. It also ultimately effectively ended Nikita Khrushchev’s reign as the Russian leader. He left with his tail between his legs.

Kennedy was too young to be President and he didn’t fully grasp the DC power players and it cost him his life. The way the Dallas police just stood there and allowed Oswald to be executed just shows how things work.
