Good grief, Bones-- we're talking at the collegiate level, where he doesn't even have a year of volunteer coaching experience. Just a wee bit of difference between coaching a small high school and coaching at the college level, no? Just a wee bit more workload and time commitment.

Im astonished we are rehashing and rearguing this specific issue 3+ years later, to tell the truth.

Anyone up for getting into a difference over the departure of Willis Wilson or Scott Thompson?

This thread has become an angry circle jerk.

Point 1. it wont be Lance at least not anytime soon. In 3-5 years we might be able to determine whether it should have been Lance ,based on the results we will most assuredly compare at the time.

so the ongoing Lance debate is a waste of time

and B. We should ALL be grateful that JK appears to be meeting one of biggest wishes when it comes to Head Coach, a guy with Rice ties

AND!!!!! lets all agree to throw away those HORRIBLE uni's trotted out last year. Someone deserves to be punched in the nuts for that crap

Where did I say anything different? I specifically responded to a comment that he had 'no head coaching experience'. I specifically quoted that comment.

I even compared this to Cruz Jr, who has NO head coaching experience at all, but despite that, I said he has a significantly superior coaching resume.

I think you sometimes anticipate argument in my comments when no such disagreement, merely a clarification exists. I am a firm believer that great arguments don't need embellishment... they can stand on their own. Lance DOES have head coaching experience. That doesn't make him 'the right' hire for us. What (made) him a candidate for our position had nothing to do with his coaching experience.

Yes, his experience is at a small private high school.... but in a very short period, he DID win a state championship at his level.... against guys with vastly more head coaching experience. We can appropriately value the level and length, but we can't just dismiss it... and that's what was being done.

Article says we interviewed Allen, Gautreau, and Childress. Says that two got follow up interviews and that Childress is not expected to be the next head guy. I have also been told that Hallmark got an interview last week as well.

The more I read on Allen and Gautreau I like them, but still believe Hallmark is the guy for us. Rice roots through and through is the way to go IMO. Also the least likely flight risk of the candidates thus far.

I obviously agree on Hallmark, but do think Allen comes in a close second, given his strong Texas and Houston ties, and recruiting experience. Both he and Gautreau have Tulane ties.

Yes, Allen's resume is great plus the Houston/Texas ties.

I do wonder if he would prefer the UH job though if given the opportunity. Played and coached there. Looks like Whitting still has the job, but UH had a worse overall and conference record than us this past year after a crummy 2020 showing as well. If they do can him, which seems unlikely at this point, I would think that Allen is priority #1 for them. So if he is the guy would make sense to move forward ASAP, though Texas being the #2 national seed and potentially Omaha bound creates a wrinkle.

Btw, for those who cannot access it, the article also notes that we are looking to hire the new HC within a week or two.

IMO, Rice is just as good (if not a better job than UH) and even though Allen is an alum, I think it'd be unlikely for him to jump from Rice to UH if/when that job comes open.

Agreed. I just figured UH would be very interested in him if they do get rid of Whitting. If he is our guy I do not see that job as any more attractive or a flight risk.

Joe Karlgaard would be my guess. Those people talk, I'm sure Childress talked to Wayne.

I'm sure Childress spoke to Wayne before he even agreed to be interviewed. And Kendall never said that Childress wasn't interested. Rather, he said, "Childress, though, is not expected to be the next head man for the Owls."

My guess would be that Childress laid out some pretty clear expectations if he took the job and was told that those weren't happening, so it was by mutual agreement that he dropped out.

Anybody's guess, but given the circumstances, JK has to know that he's not going to have the control over the program with any quality candidate this time round that he demanded of Bragga. Matt was a fool for going along with it for so long, and he was warned by a number of people. I don't think Childress' expectations are going to be any different than that of Hallmark or Allen; Hallmark in particular (who is well aware of the friction between JK and Wayne, and knows of some of the negative things JK did to the program).

My concern is the possibility that JK is more concerned about maintaining control than he is about hiring a quality candidate.

Anyone care to lay odds on the candidates mentioned so far (unless there is a sleeper). Candidates listed here and in no particular order: Allen, Hallmark, Geutreaux, Hobbes, Cruz, Janish. I think that is the list. All with Texas ties which is really good. I think we will know next week or early the following if I were to guess. I like all of these candidates so hopefully the next coach will come from this list. Not saying a "sleeper" will not be good as well just hope for the Texas ties if a sleeper is the guy.

I'm impressed with all the finalists. All of them are qualified. All of them have strong recruiting ties to the state. Not even JK could bungle this up. We're about to get a great baseball coach.

I haven't seen Matt Hobbs mentioned anywhere outside this forum FWIW.

I'd also rule out Janish. Don't see him getting the job after being on the staffs of the last two coaches that have been fired/forced out.
