Ratings don't lie. For some odd reason, I am not sure that Memphis has ever been a great sports radio market. I don't listen to KTCK in Dallas much but seems like the times I have.....there is a lot of "locker room" type of chatter. Everything from what the hosts thought of a recent movie or area event...not all sports. But, the guys doing the talking are interesting to listen to...not boring but...somewhat enlightening.
My favorite Dallas sports guy is RANDY GALLOWAY. Here is an interview with him. Very smart, entertaining and knows his local sports.

I also live in Dallas and, obviously it's a more mature sports market but the number of personalities is what stands out. Hitzges, Galloway, Mike Fisher, etc..... It's like the guys at 92.9 are all trying to be the same sometimes. Wish they'd find ways to disagree more - or yea, maybe do a little more show prep.

They are indeed horrible. And the most pitiful part is that they don’t talk about sports, but just make stupid cracks about this or that and then laugh insanely at themselves, like they are actually funny. It is so bad that I simply am unable to listen to it anymore. Pitiful...just pitiful.

Here's the deal...Peter is ok in his element...when he is being a numbers nerd and approaching things analytically. He has zero charisma (and that is fine) but tries to be cute and snarky. And that just doesn't suit him.

So they pair him with a brotha who "keeps it real" like a good ol' 90's team em up movie. Problem is, Sain has nothing to offer but stupid takes. He doesn't know sports. That's a problem if you are on a sports talk show. And he's just a terrible complement to Peter.

It's clear they do little to no show prep and the production value is piss poor.

Compare it to a 929 program where there is a defined agenda for each show and there are topics the hosts seem to have prepared in advance.

Great insight and I agree with you

Totally agree with you. I'm usually listening to the radio during that time of day and I completely hate those national shows on 92.9 and 560 is such complete garbage that I just ease back up the dail to music.04-cheers

Tier Three - Will Listen Only if they Have a Good Guest:
Jason & John
Gianotto & Jeffrey
Middays w/ Greg & Eli
Wolo & Stats

Tier Four - Makes my Ears Bleed:
Johnny Radio
Peter & Anthony
Jeff Whineburger (Emeritus)

Tier One - Legend Status:
George Lapides (Emeritus)

Tier Two - Will Listen:
Geoff Calkins (wish he'd unload Jeffery Wright)
Wolo & Stats (golf forces a tuning change)

Tier Three - Will Listen Only if they Have a Good Guest:
Jason & John
Gianotto (wish he'd unload Jeffery Wright) & Jeffrey
Middays w/ Greg & Eli

Tier Four - Makes my Ears Bleed:
Chris Vernon Show
Gary Parrish Show
Peter & Anthony
Jeff Whineburger (Emeritus)
Johnny Radio (the worst, should add Jeffery Wright)

And, ratings do lie. The rise and fall of local sports radio ratings depends on the listeners level of interest/non-interest in the team and the time of day. What movie a host likes, or how their airplane ride went, or if their kid is cool, or where they ate dinner, is not why any of us listen to sports talk. We want to hear about our team. If we are pre-season top 10 or the Grizzlies win a play off game and the ratings go up, that's not the amazing host.

I have SXM so sometimes I'll put on Howard but TBH his shows since pandemic have been mostly garbage too. Usually just go with a podcast or old Howard show on youtube. Guess 92.9 is contractually obligated to carry the national morning show?

I don't get the Lapides love.

The guy was boorish and an absolute egomaniac.

He very well may have been the dean of the Memphis sports/sport talk scene but he made sure knew it.

And in all reality, he wasn't terribly up on sports. He knew the Cards. And Tigers/SEC.

Agree but isn't that what a good local program should focus on?

Fair. Just meaning he lacked knowledge outside of that. So, in discussing a, say tOSU vs. Texas football game, or who the 5 best CBB teams are, he lacked insight unless they were local.

Plus, you had to hear about Mr. B's, or the Poor Boys from Mortimers.

I don't think I was giving away trade secrets noting that GL was pretty aloof. Undoubtedly, he is was one of the most impactful people in the Memphis sporting scene.

Mortimers had the salmon croquettes and crawfish etouffee, frankly. Some kinda good.
