RE: Coaching Carousel
Smaller one, but more regionally local...Central Michigan just fired Keno Davis, about a .500 coach who had the program trending up with 4 20+ win seasons out of 5 years before crashing back to Earth the last two years. Had some very average years at Providence before that (you would all recognize him).

I see Dane Fife's name pop up here and there as a HC prospect. Is CMU an option, or is it understood that he's in line for a higher profile opportunity (even possibly head coach at MSU)?

I wouldn't go to a MAC school outside of Buffalo, honestly. There is next to no chance for anything even remotely resembling consistency at any of the other schools with their funding/attendance issues.

Well someone has to go there. I feel like "younger" assistants with ties to big schools (like Fife) just need a HC spot on their resume anymore - Hubert Davis seemingly an exception - which Fife already has (an unspectacular 6-year run at then-IPFW). So I don't think he'll feel the need to go to CMU if he's angling for Izzo's future vacant spot.

It seemed for a while that we'd think Chris Collins or Steve Wojciechowski would be the one to get Coach K's spot because they'd have the most head coaching experience by the time he retired. But with Woj getting fired, I think some of the younger assistants are feeling they might have a shot at that job. Nate James just left for Austin Peay and I wouldn't be surprised to see Scheyer start looking. But if Hubert Davis gets the job, I think top asisstants at bigger school might not feel the need to be a head coach somewhere else first.

Isn't that true of the vast majority of mid major programs? When coaches with high major coaching ability and recruiting connections get those gigs, they excel. See Huggins and Cronin.

Eh...I feel like it's a little different at schools that are FCS/D2 in football...funding is more even, and generally, expectations match the lower perception of the athletics department as a whole. MAC schools, more than any other sporting conference with FBS teams, have a HUGE funding disparity between those sports, but still have fanbases who tend to be less than thrilled with average results from basketball despite that disparity every now and again.

Agreed...I think you'll have more of the big "culture" jobs with coaches with exceptionally long tenures lean towards keeping that culture by hiring from within now. Football has seen some success with that in places like Florida State (Bowden to Fisher), Oklahoma (Stoops to Riley), etc.. I would think Jon Scheyer is kind of operating under the pretense that he's got a pretty good shot at Duke once it's all said and done if he sticks around there rather than jumping to a smaller school and risking losing that opportunity entirely, kind of like what Hubert Davis might end up with here soon at UNC.

Dan Fife is being added to Mike Woodson's staff at IU. Interesting...wonder if there's a little tactical play there for if/when Woodson flunks out.

I just about fell over when I first read that...though UNC went the NBA retread route and hired 85 year old Hubie Davis. Lol

You think Arizona would hire Bryce Drew? He's in the neighborhood.

It will be interesting to see what and when Ncaa developments come out at Arizona. They've got the kind of issues that could/will impact hiring a coach one would think.

Arizona waited 4 years after the FBI investigation became public to dump Miller. They basically let his contract expire. Arizona is still waiting on the NCAA punishment after 5 Level I violations were alleged. Talk about a bad situation.
