RE: Transfer portal
I can’t wait for the stats of the number of guys who don’t find D-1 scholarships. Just no room at the inn for most of these guys...not to mention a lot of high school kids. It’s a story that’s not really being discussed. A lot of these guys are not getting many nibbles.

With the extra year of eligibility, Jucos are going to fill up with an influx of HS kids and 1st year xfers who don’t find a home.

Yeah, it's going to be carnage. And D2 isn't an option if you're searching for a full scholarship.

I want a breakdown on who’s advising these kids

I suspect lots of them have been told to enter the portal by their current coaches. Great time to prune the tree for new growth.

Maybe that's what Brannen did after Houston ate our lunch for the second time this year.

Not sure if you meant that as sarcasm, but it was pretty evident after two blowouts that UC clearly didn't have the talent on the floor to compete with the conference leader. I don't know if showing his own recruits the door was the right course of action. But Brannen knew enough as a coach to see that his team couldn't even compete with Houston ten minutes into both games this year and that changes would have to be made. Maybe that's why he disappeared before the final buzzer sounded at the AAC Championship Game. 03-wink

Well now I can't tell if you are meaning this as sarcasm...

RE: Transfer portal
Is there a place to track who is in the portal?

Verbalcommits.com seems like one, but it doesn't say when players entered the portal. It says how long ago the data was "updated," but that isn't current (if you refresh the page, that number stays the same).

According to that website, this year isn't too unusual yet:
2012: 577 transfers
2013: 672
2014: 752
2015: 829
2016: 800
2017: 904
2018: 882
2019: 990
2020: 1026
2021: 1020

If that dude walks out of college with 6 years of playing time, a bachelors and a masters degree, and not a dime out of his pocket, he’s the smartest guy in the game. Use the system versus the other way around.

Brady White is gonna be close to finishing his PhD. I think most schools now try to graduate their athletes in 3 years so if you're really on top of things you should be able to get a hell of a lot out of your scholarship.

Who wants to set the over/under on the % of those guys who are on scholarship in D1 next year?

Most PhD programs pay you more than room & board & cost of living. At least, if the PhD is worth anything on the job market.

Most business, engineering, and hard science PhD programs cover 100% of tuition and pay stipends of $20-$25k/year. Harvard pays minimum of $33,000 for liberal arts PhDs, and more for top students. I've heard that Tennessee has an endowment that pays their management PhD students $40,000/year.

Brady White is getting a PhD in liberal studies from Memphis. That pays $12,000/year (and not every student gets paid).

This might be the worst use of scholarship money I've ever heard of.

For those who are old enough to remember Dr. Science comedy on NPR...
