FL does it again: No free WOKE majors
Not yet passed but in the works...

Florida Bill Would Restrict Scholarships for Majors that Don’t Lead to Jobs

Quote:Senate Bill 86, which would reduce Florida’s “Bright Futures” scholarships for students who pursue degrees deemed unlikely to lead to jobs, was approved last week by a Senate committee, according to a report by WKMG-TV.

This means that students who have chosen “woke” majors might have to find another way to pay their tuition.

In the bill’s first iteration, students’ Bright Futures aid would be cut “completely” for certain majors, but an amendment adopted by the committee now has the bill reducing the scholarship amounts awarded to students.

You'd be amazed at the amount of bitching about this from some people, but I'm all for it. If you want to study medieval transgender dance theory or the glories of socialism, go right ahead. Just don't expect the government to pick up your tab when we need people with employable skills such as engineering, the sciences, etc. It's no different than what my last employer did. They paid for me to get my master's degree, provided it was in a field that would provide tangible benefits to the organization.

DANG! That's totally unfair. Now who the heck is going to show me how to make a basket or learn and teach about Black history or hispanic history. I'm not giving them (Florida) another cent. Oh, I forgot I never have.

It also reduces aid to students that take AP collegiate credits while in high school. The state government is way too Republican.

Kids should be kids, not in college. Dual enrollment is a cheap way for colleges who are hurting for enrollment to get numbers up.

Maybe in 1980 but college costs a lot more these days. Dual enrollment reduces student loan debt.

No, as a person who works in higher ed I know the policies and plans to get these kids young. When I would run these kids grades it was sad what a disservice we were doing to so many just to fill a quota. Some passed, but many failed, and later because they had an F on their transcript started college ( our never attended because they "failed" college)behind the 8 ball.

Colleges are hurting for enrollment BAD.

Competition would reduce student load debt, too.

Once the gov stops footing the bill we'll see colleges stop raising tuition year after year and begin to compete for students.

I'm basing it off of my cousin who earned her BS in under 2 years. Spent a 3rd year getting a master's and just graduated from law school.

McRory tried to do this in NC. Oddly, he subsequently didn't win re-election...

Sounds like a way to lose the suburbs.

Florida is a very well run state thanks to our republican legislature. Don't come here if you don't like it. We love our state government.

Looks like the suburban backlash made them drop it. My county went 75% Trump and many around here mobilized to contact the state senators about it.

Yes please!!!
So many students in woke majors - then proceeding to be unable to get a real career & having to work at McDonald's - is a big role in the whole damn problem.

The legislature is too Republican though (68-75%). When one party is too dominant, you get dumb ideas like this without push back. I don't understand how a state that is so closely divided during every election ends up with a House and Senate that is 68-75% Republican and hasn't had a democratic governor in 23 years.
