RE: Official Game Thread: UNCG
This game means nothing in the tournament seedings. Win or lose, we will start off playing at 2:30 pm Saturday in Asheville against a very tough Chattanooga team that matches up well against us. Transfers 6-7 225 K.C. Hankton from St. Louis and 6-6 215 Darius Banks from JMU were made eligible late by the "blanket exception". They are long, athletic and match up well defensively against our best scorers. With those guys adjusted to the team they've got talent to play with anyone in the SoCon... and to beat us twice, but by last second good fortune both times.
But as 81 says this game is very important for getting the Bucs together and in the best possible shape for a Tournament run. The SoCon is very winnable for a team that comes in fired up. And very much able to knock you out in the first round that you don't bring your "A" game.
For UNCG, this game could mean the difference between a #1 seed and a #3, depending on who wins the Wofford/Furman game, which is another tossup game. Whether that really means anything to a Spartan team that has dropped games to #7 VMI and to #9 Western Carolina, but can beat any of the top teams in the conference is open to question.
UNCG is what they have been all year: Isaiah Miller's team. They reflect Isaiah's skills and personality: the #1 ranked defensive team in the SoCon by KenPom, and a middle of the road offensive team (#167 of 357 D1 teams), as Isaiah is the #1 defender in the league, but shoots .179 from 3 in conference. The Spartans are .309 as a team from 3, last in the SoCon, with A.J. McGinnis, Angelo Allegri and Keyshawn Langley averaging from 1.4 to 1.9 makes per game. They are athletic and physical and will scratch and claw for 40 minutes
They are an excellent road team, going 7-2 away from home in the SoCon. That's mostly against lower ranked teams, with the best road wins being over Wofford and Chattanooga.
UNCG may have been looking ahead to the Bucs when they dropped their last game to Western Carolina, 81-80, as Mason Faulkner returned after a 4 game absence for "personal issues" and looked fired up and rejuvenated, like his old self, dominating the ball, controlling the pace and scoring 28. As both poster and I have noted, Mason had not been playing like his old self earlier in the year, for whatever reason. He appears to be back now.
Kenpom has the Bucs by 1, 65-64. They'll have to fight for it. Go Bucs.
