It has been reported by a very reliable inside source that a former head coach and Big12 DC was interviewing at North Texas yesterday. While a name was not given by the source, some UNT fans speculate it could be Mike Stoops, a long time friend of Seth Littrell. Fans have been impatient with Littrell for dragging his feet on this hire. Bowen was let go at the first of the year, and while other programs have fired and hired coaches UNT has not. Stoops seems to be the target. He was tied up with his job as an analyst and back up COVID coach with Alabama until after the National Title game this past Monday. Unfortunately, Stoops is also rumored to be one of the coaches in the running for the Missouri DC position. Here is a rundown on Stoops. I'll post more if something actually comes of this.

I think we have some players, but we probably need more especially along the D-line and in the secondary. Hoping he can make home run hires at those coaching positions and then lure some play-makers in the closing days before signing day. We will see.

I agree. Phil Bennett is a great hire for UNT. I've been following him since he was the DC at Kansas State. He's a very good hire.

DENTON – Phil Bennett, one of the most experienced defensive coordinators in college football, has been named North Texas' defensive coordinator and safeties coach, head football coach Seth Littrell announced Friday. The hire is pending HR approval.

Bennett brings 40 years of coaching experience to Denton, including six seasons as the head coach at SMU (2002-2007) and nine stints as defensive coordinator at nine different schools, most recently Arizona State (2017). Throughout his career, Bennett has overseen the growth of 56 different players that have gone on to NFL careers.

"The opportunity to get Coach Bennett to lead our defense was a no-brainer for me," Littrell said. "He's been a mentor to me for several years and his wealth of knowledge and experience will benefit our entire program. Nobody can argue his credentials. He has led top-10 defenses at the highest level of college football and has a proven track record of turning those units around. Littrell's 31-31 record is definitely mediocre, but it's still a huge improvement over the 88-182 record you guys swung in the 23 seasons prior to his arrival. That said, if you don't show marked improvement this season with the addition of your new DC, Littrell's definitely gotta go then. I think the real crime here isn't so much his 31-31 record - as it's clearly better than your last 6 coaches - but rather how much you're paying him to go 31-31.

It's the Texas way to overpay for underwhelming results! We're trying to replicate how they do it in Austin and College Station exactly.

Good pick up by UNT. Hope it works out for you. If we want this conference to improve then we need a strong North Texas football program imo.
