Protect this house is Under Armour advertising. All are wearing Under Armour gear with the C-paw on it. Seems to be a tie in with our apparel supplier...as well as a statement by our local coaches.

At this point, he's probably as close to the face of Uc as anyone over there. It's the area's biggest employer. Fickell at this point gets a considerable amount of national attention.

I don't think we've been an Nfl town since Paul Brown passed away.

There are a lot of people that don’t pay attention to us (Peach Bowl excluded). They know who Luke Fickell is, but I still talk to people who have no clue what conference we are in or that we don’t play Louisville anymore.

The vast majority of people do not watch college football.

Only 8.7 million Americans watched the Peach Bowl. Even if every single one of them was in Ohio & Georgia, that's less than half of the population.

Only 1.88 million Americans watched the UC-Tulsa game.

Even in local media: The Enquirer only has a daily circulation of around 100,000 these days. That's about 11% of local households. Local TV news ratings are even lower.

There's a lot of casual fans & potential fans out there. But most of them don't follow closely enough to know the face of a guy who only arrived on campus 4 years ago. That's practically yesterday for anyone over 30 years old.

This isn't about me. I recognize Fickell. But even I (an active UCATS member who follows this message board daily) don't recognize the other two.

As of 2013, there were only about 5,000 UCATS members. We're a very small group.


I fully admit that this seems to have hit a bullseye with the target audience. I'm just saying that it's odd to make no effort to appeal to anyone outside an extremely small target on such a big ad buy. Especially in the midst of a severe budget crisis.

Ok...there are 4 C-Paws on that billboard, it has red and black branding, and it's in Cincinnati only...if people can't connect those dots, I'd hate to see them try to draw a straight line with a ruler. Who cares who the faces are on it, its more area branding, that's all that matters.

Absolutely no offense intended with my response here, but I don't think your wife is the target audience of this billboard.

The goal doesn't appear to be ticket sales or donations --- it looks like they're throwing a bone to those that pay attention to UC enough by letting them know the momentum isn't going anywhere because Fickell is still here.

The intended audience is likely us here on this board, local families with high school athletes, and the diehards on social media (knowing it would get posted). Keep those folks happy here in the short term and then they'll do an all-out assault on marketing to sell out Nippert later this spring/summer.

Honestly, I'm impressed the AD scrambled quick enough to get a billboard out there. They're at least trying.

I'll hazard a guess that the billboards were purchased well in advance for the eventuality of messages celebrating an undefeated season and "Peach Bowl Champions". The graphics UC used instead were an alternate since the buy had already been made.

I'm divided on the matter of whether the content should better identify UC. I guess I'm in the camp of preferring a big, bold C-Paw on there somewhere as thousands of interstate travelers may otherwise be clueless and much of brand building is all about increasing visual impressions. But I do agree with those suggesting that if you live in the Tri-State and care at all about sports, you'll immediately recognize Fickell and the Red and Black as UC.

I do hope Cunningham redoubles efforts to completely fill every seat in Nippert this fall. It's been fun watching the interest in UC football grow steadily for most of the past 20 years. But based on performance, shouldn't UC football be the hottest ticket in town? Not FCC any longer; not the Bengals or Reds, sad as all that is. Far and away, UC football has the most promising 2021 season of any team in town and it's arriving in about eight months.

Big Fick is about the only coach in this city that has produced results.
Toss in John Brannen with Bell and company and the city’s current group of coaches is one big bunch of haven’t won a darn thing, loser parade.

It makes the Peach Bowl more painful but at least they finished 8th in nation.

Wow this city might be at its lowest sports point from a coaching resume standpoint in a long time.

I don’t disagree with you, but one thing to think about is, what does an average person see when they glance up at 60mph? With billboards, one needs to get the message across in no more than 500 milliseconds.

Said - If things break in UC’s favor, Chris Ash would be the new defensive coordinator. He also mentions Mike Mickens, Mike Tressel, and another guy from Ohio state but I miss that. I think it’s an obvious Guy you guys would know.

OC- He said currently Denbrock now. And if he leaves there’s only one choice and that’s Gino.

What are your thoughts

Paul Haynes was the other - was DC at OSU in 2011 and is the Minnesota Golden Gophers CB coach now - also went to Fickell's high school.

Chris Ash or Mike Mickens please! Other two will work but more meh.

Texas is reportedly considering keeping Ash on their new staff. He did a pretty good job last year under Herman.

Haynes and Tressel, no thank you.

No offense, but I think Chris Ash is going to have bigger opportunities than being the DC at UC. Rumors already circulating that Urban Meyer may be eyeing a position for him in Jacksonville. There are also reports he is in talks with Florida in becoming their DC.
