Around #65 with his current contract. Based on being responsible for selling an extra 10,000 tickets per game alone, definitely.

Yes, for a second contract most certainly.
That is debatable. $2,450,000 for a 3rd year head coach without an NCAA tournament appearance is pretty fair pair, I certainly would not consider him as being underpaid. I am all for the extension for a number of reasons but I do not think he is working below market value any longer.
It still puts him outside of the top 50.

Which is right around where he should be. He has proven he can recruit and he jumped ticket sales. However, we all know attendance follows winning. If Penny does not get us in the tournament then attendance will dwindle again. He has to prove he can win. That is ultimately what he is paid to do and that is what will determine attendance long term.
Again, I am 100% on board with the extension and I think the pay is right around where he should be. I also believe he is going to get winning back on track and have us back in the tournament. I just have the impression that this team will wake up and be a force.

Because John Wooden died and isn't coming to Memphis. Tigers fans. Oh, boy. He re-energized the base, improved recruiting by leaps-and-bound, and put butts in the seats. Ok, not enough wins. Fair enough. If those don't come, it'll be time for a change and I'll be first in line to say maybe the program needs to go another way. But wow. This man is a Memphis legend. I live in Michigan and my family and I cannot wait to watch the games. He absolutely deserved the extension. Elvis said it best - "Lord a-mighty."

Amen brother! We knew we were getting an inexperienced coach. A few more years and he will be the man!

the people butthurt about this extension must be rich enough to be paying a large part of Penny's salary -- that's impressive that they are that rich and still find time to post on this board!--

The shorter the coaches remaining contract the harder it is for him to recruit.
Either the Admin supports their coach or they essentially are handicapping him...
If you choose to not extend him because you think he is not good enough he is just going to be worse because it makes it harder to recruit.

I looked it up, and we were paying Cal $2.35 million/year when he bolted for KY.
And that was 12 years ago. Not a good example. Better comparison would be what were we paying Tubby Smith in his first and only contract and who took a bad situation and made it much worse.

An extension was a no-brainer. We weren't about to hire a Tiger basketball legend and show him the door in 3 or 4 years. And the amount doesn't seem excessive under the circumstances, so good job.

If all we have to look forward to is more of what we saw tonight this may be a mistake.

Funny how that works, isn't it?
Like I said, it's all about the buyout. Because at this rate, we're going nowhere THIS year and I am not sure about next year either. At that point, 4 years and not a whiff of the Big Dance...for someone just outside the top 50 in coaches salaries.
Is it too difficult to ask a Big Dance invite every other year at that pay? Geez.

Around #65 with his current contract. Based on being responsible for selling an extra 10,000 tickets per game alone, definitely.
He has likely already brought in enough additional revenue to cover this entire contract. No one should get too worked up about the $$.

I obviously don’t know what he would do if staring at that, but my impression is that Penny will either figure it out or walk. I can’t see him walking, so I’m thinking he gets it figured out. I definitely don’t see him holding the school hostage over a contract.

I think their plan was to make the announcement then we go out and put a hammering on Tulsa and all's good in the world.
Unfortunately, it was probably the worst timing possible to announce this deal and then go out and lose.
