A predictable and great move by the school.

Yes, for a second contract most certainly.

Granted we are not were we want or hope to be.

We were broke.
The fans had left.
The nation had deemed us irrelevant.
ESPN and the rest of the sports world talked about us in the past tense if at all.
The recruits were not returning phone calls.
The boosters were getting shallow pockets.
The schedule was getting worse by the year.
We hired Tubby Smith for a boat load of money With a thimble full of results.

Not a bad reason to extend and for a discount.

It sucks when you have to explain to people (who still won't understand) that it is impossible for a coach to recruit a player, when they don't have a contract to be the coach at that school a year later.

Penny - Come to Memphis
Recruit - You don't have a contract to be there next year
Penny - Dynamos says I don't deserve it, come anyway.

I was always against the use of smilies, but they are a much safer way to point out certain types of behaviour.

We’re not where we wanna be,
We’re not where we’re gonna be,
But thank God we’re not where we were.
Good move.

With this extension, Penny has no excuses. He has to admit his shortcomings as a coach and adjust his philosophy. If he can't change, then hire a better staff with a proven x and o guy. As an ambassador for the University and as someone to relate to today's kids he has few peers. Now, let's see if he can continue to recruit top level talent and provide these recruits with an atmosphere where they actually improve their skill level. If this happens maybe we can return to the Big Dance one day.

Yes, for a second contract most certainly.

That is debatable. $2,450,000 for a 3rd year head coach without an NCAA tournament appearance is pretty fair pair, I certainly would not consider him as being underpaid. I am all for the extension for a number of reasons but I do not think he is working below market value any longer.

I looked it up, and we were paying Cal $2.35 million/year when he bolted for KY.

Overall I am fine with it (depending on the buyout) but I agree 2.4mil for a coach that has never even sniffed the tournament is big time money.

Hopefully he starts making the tournament real soon.

It's all about the buyout. Last year was beyond bizarre with COVID and Wiseman. That said, it's year 3 and Lomax has not improved...at all and our offense just stagnates. If Penny doesn't get us to the Big Dance next year, it'll be 4 years w/out a Big Dance invitation and not sure how much longer he should get.

As long as it doesn’t hurt us in the long run. I’m not trying to be that guy but with the way it’s gone for Penny I would be much more comfortable with a 3 year contract

He doesn't have to admit to anything. He just has to win.
