Rest of CAA play discussion thread 2020-21
Some updates from around the league, with the first week of the season wrapped up.

Northeastern and Delaware are the only 2 teams who have yet to see the court this season thanks to COVID-related effects.

* Northeastern: Due to some positive tests, NU has delayed the start of their winter sports schedule until at least December 18th.

* Delaware: Suspended all team activities back on on November 17th due to positive tests. They have yet to start their season, and their upcoming game against UMBC on Wednesday, Dec 2 has been postponed. Their next chance to see the court will be December 5th @ Delaware State. No announcement has been made just yet on that game.

* Hofstra (1-1): Hofstra's opener against Monmouth was canceled, but the preseason CAA favorites have since lost @ # 24 Rutgers, and won their home opener with Fairleigh Dickinson, 73-58. Tareq Coburn led the way with 21 points in the win. Next up for Hofstra is their 2nd of 3 straight home games, against Iona on December 5th.

* Drexel (0-1): Picked to finish 3rd in the league, the Dragons had their first game @ Penn State postponed. They then fell @ Pittsburgh, 83-74, on Saturday. Camren Wynter stuffed the stat sheet with 24 points along with 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Next up for Drexel is the Air Force Reserve Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic in Connecticut, where they will take on Quinnipiac on December 2nd and Bryant on December 3rd.

* Towson (0-3): The Tigers, picked to finish 4th by the CAA coaches, went winless at the Bubbleville tournament at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. The Tigers fell against 3 quality opponents in # 15 Virginia, San Francisco and Buffalo. Zane Martin put up 25 points against San Francisco and 27 against Buffalo in the losing efforts. Next up for Towson is their home opener on Thursday, December 3rd against Coppin State.

* Elon (2-0): The Phoenix got off to a good start to the season, with wins against NC Wesleyan and a 76-75 home victory over High Point. Elon came back from an 11-point deficit, with Hunter McIntosh hitting two free throws with 3.0 seconds remaining to give Elon the lead and the win. Elon hosts Mercer on Thursday before facing # 6 Duke on the road on Sunday.

* Charleston (1-1): The Cougars fell @ # 14 UNC, 79-60, then defeated Non-DI Limestone 99-59 on Saturday. Charleston had a 1-point lead early in the 2nd half against the Tarheels, but UNC then went on a 17-0 run to seal the game. Next up for the Cougars is a big home game against # 19 Richmond on Wednesday night.

* James Madison (2-1): The Dukes grabbed a non-DI win over Limestone and a DI win over Radford, sandwiching a bad 10-point loss to Norfolk State, with all 3 games taking place at home. In the 67-59 win over Radford, Vado Morse finished with 26 points and Matt Lewis added 18. Next up for JMU is a week off, followed by another home game against Old Dominion on Monday, December 7th.

* William & Mary (0-1): The Tribe, picked to finish last, have 4 cancellations on their schedule from November 30th thru December 9th, with all activities frozen until at least December 14th. However, they were at least able to get 1 game in, an 86-78 loss to ODU. Shooting guard Connor Kochera represented a bright spot for the Tribe, taking home CAA Rookie of the Week honors thanks to a 19 point effort, which included hitting 6 of 7 from the perimeter.

Nice. Thanks for putting this together.

In the ever-changing world of NCAA basketball schedules this year, Drexel is now facing off against Quinnipiac two games in two consecutive days. Since the MAAC is using a similar conference to the CAA, I guess both teams thought it might be a good preview to conference play when Bryant wasn't able to make it to Bubbleville.

Drexel wins again today by 12. Was about 6-8 most of the way, so closer but at arm length. Been a long time since Drexel was able to stay at arms length over a team in multiple game, yet alone on back to back days. Promising start for the Dragons.

Furman is destroying CofC 63-29 with 13 minutes left. Reminds me of the beat down we took with McGrath. Wow.

Joe Linardi's "Bracketology" has the CAA Champion (at the moment he has Hofstra penciled in) as a #16 Seed in the tournament.

No respect at all.

Gotta earn that respect. Overall, the CAA does not look very good this year.

I mean, league favorite Hofstra just lost to Iona today, at home, to fall to 1-2. And Delaware, picked to finish 2nd, just barely beat a DII team (Salem International), 79-76.

If the CAA is going to get 15 and 16 seeds on a regular basis we really need to start evaluating

We would’ve re-evaluated and left with the other good basketball schools years ago if we didn’t disrespect a great coach the way the AD at the time did. Set us back decades honestly. IMO, we’re still in constant recovery mode and now in a shell of a once respectable conference.

The CAA became great because it had a Virginia centric core of really good schools. VCU was the flagship, with George Mason and ODU anchoring the conference in Virginia. Add in JMU and William and Mary, and the whole state of Virginia was exposed to CAA basketball. At one time, the CAA was the best conference for basketball in Virginia, eclipsing the ACC with weak VT and UVA teams.

The loss of VCU, ODU and GMU was the death knell of the CAA, and I can't see how it recovers. There is no intertia for the conference, and it is far too big geographically for a mid major basketball conference. Add to it the focus on football, and it's destined for failure.

CofC and Elon should admit error and rejoin the SoCon, and UNCW should join them. UNCG is finally reaching it's potentlal under Miller as well. Or, we should build a new arena or expand Trask and make a serious run at the A10. Bottom line is the CAA is no longer the best fit for UNCW.

The potential for future football is also greater in a much more compact SoCon conference should we ever move in that direction.

To be fair, Iona has developed a very good program that has been the class of the MAAC for a while. And that was before Pitino arrived.

They've never had that opportunity so I wouldn't bet on it. If we came in along with CofC, I bet they would in a heartbeat. There would be no reason to say no except hard feelings. It's not like it's a powerhouse football conference seeking to go fbs or one at the top of the FCS pile.

Sure, and they were picked to finish 2nd in the MAAC this year. But Hofstra still shouldn't be losing that game at home. Even with no fans in the arena. You have to take advantage of those opportunities in the early part of the schedule.
