The standout spotlights included a touching series-finale sweep of the big comedy awards by the cast of “Schitt’s Creek.” Other big winners included HBO’s “Succession” — which landed the top writing, directing and actor trophies — and “Watchmen” star and 2019 Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”), who accepted her fourth Emmy statue, this one for Best Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Television Movie.

The Emmys were the second awards to post a ratings drop this year. The hot-mess 2020 VMAs — the first live ceremony held during the coronavirus pandemic — nabbed just 6.4 million viewers last month.

Not to defend in any way, but tv just isn’t a shared experience anymore. People are spread over a lot of platforms with little in the way of commonality of viewership. The reason shows like Seinfeld and Cheers are iconic is because everyone watched them. There aren’t shows like that anymore that unite viewership. Lots of good shows, just spread out to much to get eyeballs.

Well who wants to watch a bunch of rich actors pat themselves on the back all while telling you how evil and hateful you are compared to them and their white/liberal privilege?

Yep, Kimmel got political from the get go so I turned the channel. I was interested to see how they would pull off the virtual part of the show but not interested enought to sit through more political nonsense.

They said almost noone on broadcast TV won any awards. It was mostly HBO and the like.

Especially when some of those rich actors patting themselves on the back telling your how evil and hateful YOU are have a history of parading around in blackface.

For the most part that is true.

But then there are the Game of Thrones, Tiger King, and The Mandalorian. Those shows achieved cultural impact levels.

If I was a big three network, I would go back to the old 60's model. Promote and premier my whole prime time schedule at once. Old timers would enjoy the throwback, and for anyone under 40 it would be a new experience.

ER has been off the air since 2009 but I swear NBC has done 30 new drama series that are the same show, with the same type of characters with a different title. Even the promos for the show look the same.
